______

Like I mentioned, I watched Apollo 13 earlier.

I thought it was a fine movie but it for some reason didn't hold me attention very well.

The acting from the cast was pretty good and the story is something I was interested in...but for some reason that I cannot place my finger on it just seemed to drag on for me after about 1h 20m until the end

Because of that I'm going to lower the score a little; I did still enjoy it overall though.

Rating - 3.75/5

my wife and I saw this movie at the theatre when it came out in the evening after work-- I was a bit tired and we both found it uninvolving and I had a hard time staying awake--

saw it again a year later on video and was surprised to see how much I enjoyed it a second time-- I've seen it several times since then and still think it's a very good film -- 4 out of 5 stars-- check it out sometime down the road again if you have a chance--

I'll probably revisit it down the road somewhere and see if I'm more into it then. Could have just been some random thing today that I couldn't get into it for the entire run time (the first 1h 20m I was into it just fine).

i've never seen Apollo 13 but it always struck me as the type of film that was cold and kind of made the audience feel "distant". which is odd since it's such an emotional story, but it always came across that way to me in trailers and some of the scenes i've seen.

like a film you can't connect with (character wise or whatnot) and one you're just supposed to watch, like a history lesson or something. and sometimes that works for films and sometimes it doesn't.

i'd like to see Apollo 13 hit $7 or so this BF so i can pick it up, but i'm in no rush due to how i think i will be left feeling very "distant" from the characters and what is happening.

maybe it's the directing? although, again, all i have seen is trailers.

I wouldn't necessarily say so after watching it; it's definitely not a character driven movie imo, but you do become at least a little invested in them along the journey. But for me it was nearly completely about the mission because that's what I was interested in.

I caught it on one of the HD Movie channels

i'm guessing they focus on the characters and mission pretty equally? and not necessarily a Titanic type deal where they have a romantic relationship shoved down our throats until the boat sinks? because, for something like Titanic, i would much rather watch a three hour documentary on the creation of the Titanic, how it impacted lives, resources and was a groundbreaking achievement and then a groundbreaking failure and horror than a three hour love story.

oops. spoiler alert.

It's more towards the mission than the characters but the characters are important. The family back on Earth, the people at NASA, the crew of course. All very important to the movie...but the mission is the main focus as far as I'm concerned...but maybe I'm biased because that's what I watched it for

probably bad choices to compare it to, but so then it's kind of like Armageddon and Deep Impact where they show all the aspects of the mission (like you said, back home, on the ship, NASA...) and not just one aspect shoved down our throats?

good. then i'll definitely check it out without a sense of worry

I'd say that's a fair format comparison, yes.

....now I want to see Armageddon
It's been a while.

Just finished watching Let the Right One In - the Swedish original - not the f**king American remake!

Amazing film. Easily one of the best Vampire movies ever. I'll be going over it in my head long after I go to bed

Hotel Rwanda

DVD

Man, something was lost on me here. For a film about such heavy subject matter, I never felt the rage I anticipated experiencing. I am not sure what the deal was, but It just never grabbed me. Everything seemed very "average" about the movie, especially Cheadles performance. I know I am in the minority here, so please dont kill me. It almost felt like a 1970's "Made for TV movie". Some of the dialogue seemed really odd and goofy too, especially what was written for Noltes character.

I was never bored, and I enjoyed it, but it didnt provide the emotional impact that I anticipated.

Paths of Glory

1957 NR 87 minutes

DVD

I liked this a lot.

The cinematography was very cool. Acting was top notch. Briskly paced. The trenches were well designed and looked nice and gritty.

My only beef would be that I'd like to have seen a more complete finish regarding the future/outcome for Douglas' character. A minor quabble though.

I really like the covers for Solaris and Diabolique. I think I like the DVD cover art for Diabolique better though.

add me to the list-- bought this on dvd years ago, expecting emotional drama and it never got me going at all-- it was all very "meh" and hugely disappointing to me....

Awesome movie, best Robert Rodriguez film I've seen in a long time. Lots of action, two gorgeous women and lots of tough guys. It's not a movie that'll be up for any awards but it is definitely an action masterpiece.

DVD:

I think the Diabolique cover is pretty average by Criterion standards, but it doesn't bother me. I think the Solaris cover is well-done as a piece of art, but I don't think it's as applicable to the movie as it should be. What I mean is that by showing the female, it conveys almost a love story connection. The Soderbergh version is the love story version, the book is the scientific version, and the Tarkovsky version is the metaphysical, philosophical version. But, I do like it a lot. Can't wait for it.
