Default Fox President Talks Fringe, Lie to Me & Human Target

Link

Quote:
Considering Fox is one of the most cancellation-friendly networks with numerous under-performing fan-favorite series, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly stepped in to talk about the likelihood of Fringe, Lie to Me and Human Target returning for another season.
Most recently, Fringe made the move to Friday night. While the ratings have been slipping since its time-slot premiere, Reilly still seems pleased with its performance:

Quote:
“I’m so psyched about it. It does go to show you the loyalty of the genre audience, when you get the right show. I’m so grateful to that audience; I’d like to shake their hands. We have a lot of passion for that show here.”
Even though this statement was made before Fringe’s second week of declining ratings, it’s hardly going to impact Reilly’s enthusiasm for the show. Unfortunately, for fans of Lie to Me and Human Target, his comments are less positive (if you read between the lines):

Quote:
“We have some decisions to make about [Human Target] and Lie to Me as well. These shows are not being rejected. They’re doing a consistent and solid number. There are networks that would be happy to take those shows. We have to look at our shelf space.
Reilly’s statements about Human Target and Lie to Me appear to fall in line with what we previously said about Fox’s likelihood of picking up those series. Even though Lie to Me has been delivering higher ratings than Fringe, the core demographics of Fringe (ages 18-34) makes it a more appealing pick-up.

In terms of Reilly’s closing comments about evaluating Fox’s shelf space, the network’s entertainment president is talking about how many timeslots they’ll have available once the pilot season is over. If there’s enough room for Lie to Me and Human Target, they’ll likely be renewed… if not, they’re out.

What makes the decision even more difficult is the fact that out of all the other television networks, Fox has one of the most solid line-ups and rarely makes major changes. With most of the current series returning, that makes less room for new series and even less room for Lie to Me and Human Target.

When you add in the fact that Fox already has The X-Factor slated for next year and the Bones spin-off series, The Locator, is pretty much guaranteed a spot in the line-up (thanks to Hart Hanson’s dedicated fans), the chances of both Human Target and Lie to Me returning look grim. Not to mention the fact that Fox only has 2 hours of television programming per night (the 10pm news cuts it short).

Of course, if it does come down to a decision between Human Target and Lie to Me, one should expect Lie to Me to come out on top. Why? Two words: Tim Roth. Also, Lie to Me is cheaper to produce has received more critical acclaim and award nominations.

With the end of May being the likely deadline for series contract renewals, expect a decision around that time, if not before.

That's good to hear about Fringe at least. While it is does not mean it is going to be renewed for sure, I would be surprised if it didn't get renewed. I have always felt that way though, even with the move to Fridays. Now, beyond next season? Who knows...

I'm curious what NBC is going to do with their Thursday comedies next season. Last night was tied for NBC's worst original Thursday night ever in the 18-49 demo. I would assume they'll go back to comedies from 8:00-10:00 next season. 30 Rock and The Office are obviously safe and Perfect Couples is dead so it becomes a question of what else returns. Parks and Rec was doing great when it first came back but has fallen every week and only got a 2.3/6 rating last night, despite The Office's 3.3/9 lead-in. Community was flat this week with a 1.8/5 rating. Outsourced has plummeted since getting moved to 10:30 and only had a 1.5/4 rating.

I wonder how many of the trio of Parks & Rec/Community/Outsourced return next year. I've got to think at least one gets canceled and it wouldn't surprise me if they canceled another or all of them and tried to launch new shows. They've got some high-profile pilots, including one executive produced by Lorne Michaels, one from a Scrubs executive producer, one based on Chelsea Handlers' book, as well as other comedy pilots.

Fair or not the show got a ton of promotion (including during the Super Bowl) and a great lead-in and sputtered out of the gate. A serialized show like The Chicago Code isn't likely to gain new viewers as the season goes so it's outlook is very poor right now. It's a shame because it's a great show, but viewers seem to prefer less serialized crime shows like CSI and NCIS.

Dude, drop the hate of the NCIS's. Give them a try. They may be procedural but they have some great character development and humor that provide an hour of pure escapism.

If you hate the actors that's one thing. I hat kyra Sedgwick. But The Closer cpuld be a very good show.

My grandparents watch them, so whenever I visit I would have to see them, because like 90% of CBS viewers they are over 70 years old and need monotonous boring shows. I didn't enjoy a moment of them. They weren't humorous and I hated the casting.

I am just 30 and NCIS & NCIS: Los Angeles are two of the best shows on TV. NCIS spun-off from another great show years ago in JAG which was originally canceled after one season on NBC but was then picked up by CBS and it went on for what 9 more seasons.

So than you fit into the 10% of viewers I mentioned, lol.

I watch H50 and checked out the Criminal Minds spin-off last week but that's about as far as I go with the CBS lineup.

I'm hoping Fringe gets at least another season. J.J. Abrams said they might be able to come up with a ending after season 4, but not if they have to end it this season.

Yeah same here. Besides Big Brother in the summer i haven't followed a CBS show in years(BTW I'm 30)! CBS never takes chances on shows. When was the last time CBS had a sci-fi-ish show on their line up? Or a serialized series that's 'unsafe'? wouldn't it be great if CBS took a chance on something instead of always playing it safe?

I mean on a pure financial standpoint what they're doing is great. They're catering to their demographic and it pays off. They're number almost every night, so they're doing SOMETHING right! Just not for us i guess. At least the other networks take chances on different stuff, but that's a double edge sword because if all the chances these networks take end up failing then they will stop taking chances.

Every year is the same thing, i get into new serialized shows and they end up being canceled because they're 'unsafe'. I guess I'm used to it by now but it sucks as a TV fan! Every year i start following new shows and every year almost every new show i liked get killed. The never ending circle!
