In a year with so many blockbuster, system-defining DVD releases - from the stylized 300 to the action-epic Transformers - one might wonder why a rodent with a well-developed culinary sense might have been selected as the very best DVD of 2007. And perhaps this is the category where personal opinion factors the most, but the Ratatouille Blu-ray release constituted the most effective blending of excellent filmmaking, lush visuals and worthwhile extras. Ratatouille is truly a Brad Bird film…or a Pixar film…or perhaps both terms are simply ways of acknowledging that Ratatouille has more spirit and soul than most live-action films released this year. From the heartwarming and deeply comedic story of Remy the Rat to the gorgeous animation and high-def presentation to the short films, insightful featurettes and entertaining commentaries, Ratatouille isn't a complex, feature-rich disc, but it does represent the best, most well-rounded purchase that a well-equipped DVD enthusiast could make this year.
