Criterion's facebook page just confirmed that a Jean Cocteau film will be one of the dvd to blu upgrades announced next week. I'm betting on Beauty and the Beast, rather than Orpheus.

I'll gladly welcome Beauty and the Beast or Orpheus.... can you post the actual text that they posted/tweeted/whatever-it's called? (maybe they "Face planted" ? )

You woke up before the good part after dinner? Is something wrong with you?

Every month they have a post where they invite "predictions" (or, more accurately, wishlists) and about midway through the thread they said: "One is directed by Jean Cocteau..." So they didn't specifically say that it was an upgrade of a prior title.

Yeah, 40+ years ago. The space shuttle and space station, ho hum. But man on the flippin moon. Wow, even still, if you really think about it and the technologies available at the time, it's some pretty amazing stuff. No special effects whatsoever.

Criterion also said, CG, throw away your Weekend dvd that you paid $60 for used, because we are releasing that. And I said, I don't throw away releases, like you all do when you announce crap. And then they said they wouldn't announce Weekend next week. So I kicked him.

I would hope that Criterion would wait on "Orpheus" until they get the rights, if ever, back to the other two films in the "Orphic Trilogy".

Given that 3/5 of Criterion's Cocteau catalog is Studio Canal and out of print, doesn't really leave that many options. Beauty and the Beast is pretty much a shoe-in. (Not really seeing them going with Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne, or getting back the Orphic trilogy any time soon, or releasing something they haven't already for that matter.)

Well, considering that we couldn't do it again without about 7-10 years of reengineering then I'd say it was and still is extremely impressive.

But I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of For All Mankind either. It just seems....dated. We've definitely come a long way as far as documentaries are concerned.

Wow, that'd be great! Looks like Criterioncast is saying that Omar from The Wire in the closet of dreams means Life During Wartime, from IFC will be coming out. Not necessarilly next week...

I would welcome Beauty and the Beast, except that means another DVD I have to upgrade to Blu. It's visually one of the best B&W films I've seen.

I hope you're kidding, Beta. The Wire is one of best television shows ever made. Get on it.

I was referring to "Life During Wartime" (sorry... "THE WIRE" was bolded when I quoted it )

I've never seen The Wire either though.... so perhaps you read me!

Love the NotH Avatar by the way.

In no way shape or form does For All Mankind seem dated imo. How does it seem dated? Because it relies on a more poetic narrative manner than the straightforward, fact-heavy documentaries produced today?

Actually they did specifically say that, as it was a direct response to the question: which films will receive an upgrade next week? Two minutes later was that response.

There's way too many responses to go through now. At the time, their status was inviting people to guess what titles will be released. Of course, almost everyone just listed their wishlists (and a ton of ppl still insist the cover tease from a day or two ago is Alien...slaps forehead). At one point, Criterion responded by saying something along the lines of we'll answer the next question asked. Someone asked: what upgrades will be announced next week? Two minutes later Criterion responded with "one is directed by Jean Cocteau..."

Fair enough. It was a rather lengthy thread and I was merely skimming, so I guess I missed the context.
