Warner Bros has not revealed the new location of Bag End, but it is understood it is not part of the original "Hobbiton" near Matamata, created for The Lord of the Rings movies.

I do know that PJ had the full sized version of Bag End relocated to his home, as a guest house or something. Maybe they will be shooting some of the interior shots at his place.

while I'm glad Peter Jackson is back at the helm, I'm gonna miss what Guillermo del Torro could have brought to the set and to the magical part of the movie..I love his visions..

With so much time and money invested in getting to this point - and in the film in general - I'm sure WB is going to make sure as little as possible leaks out during production.

Interesting. If Thror and Thrain will indeed be in the movie, that opens up not only more historical possibilities, but also additional locales that could be included (e.g. Moria). In particular, the background on Thrain is considerable.

Yea, I was hoping for that too, however I feel that they will probably just end up in some sort of prologue or quick flashback.

Hobbiton Red Tape Needs Untangling

Quote:
The Hobbit film-makers are about to lose permission to film in Hobbiton, the location that bookends JRR Tolkien's classic tale – though that does not mean their quest is finished.

Documents issued under the Official Information Act show a crew of up to 450 were scheduled to descend on Hobbiton, near Matamata, for up to three weeks in February and March this year.

That was delayed after director Sir Peter Jackson required surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer.

Other speedbumps – including a high-profile industrial dispute and the departure of director Guillermo del Toro – have dogged the production, which lead actor Martin Freeman has laughingly referred to as suffering the "Hobbit curse".

Shooting of the films is now under way and is planned for next summer in Hobbiton.

The fictional Hobbiton, in The Shire, is where Bilbo Baggins begins and ends his quest in The Hobbit, as does Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings. The same Hobbiton set used in Lord of the Rings has been refurbished for the two-part Hobbit movies.

Matamata-Piako District Council corporate and legal services manager Michelle Hawthorne said resource consent required that filming be completed by the end of next month.

"If 3 Foot 7 wants to film after this date they will need approval from council to do so, they have not applied to council yet, although I understand they are aware of this requirement," she said. A traffic management plan, needed for resource consent, had still not been approved by the council.

To shoot as planned next summer the production would have to get a new resource consent.

A spokeswoman for 3 Foot 7 said shooting in Hobbiton was still scheduled for next summer, but would not give specific dates.

The company would be reapplying to film at Hobbiton.

The documents, released by the Matamata-Piako District Council, show that $1.4 million was being spent constructing new hobbit holes, a new fake tree, and the Green Dragon Inn. They have been built to last more than 50 years.

The original resource consent was issued for the construction of Hobbiton, for use in The Hobbit, as far back as December 2009.

^ Yeah i'm not liking the sound of all the news thats been coming out, especially after the strike and protests and what-not.

All we can do is hope Jackson keeps a tight grip on the production and keeps his cool, although I do kind of get the feeling hes gone a little...how should i say.... 'off'. As a New Zealander, I hope the whole LOTR experience hasn't gone to his head, and that hes still a down to earth Kiwi.

I imagine Thror wouldn't play much of a role except for a vital flashback (as readers of the novel will be aware), but a retroactive scene to Moria might be in order if Jackson wants to reveal the origin of Thorin's name "Oakenshield". If they chose to make that connection, perhaps Thrain's background there will also be revealed. Of course this is all speculative, but plausible since Jackson may reveal details about the dwarf ring and associated events when Gandalf visits Thrain in Dol Guldur. Lots of potential here.

Just needs a good script, the material can survive production headaches. But if the script is a trainwreck, the movie will be one, too.

I'm sure its just a matter of submitting new paperwork. This film is too high profile for things not to get screwed up and then hastily fixed. I'm actually looking forward to the Costa Botes documentaries on the upcoming LOTR:EE Blu-ray release to see just how bad filming LOTR was. The appendices really did paint a rosey picture of production, and it will be interesting to see all the hardships they had to overcome to make the film what it became.

I was just thinking about this the other night..

my girls put on Return of the King and I was thinking about how limited the production team will be..they can't really change what Gollum looks like from the original trilogy..not that they should..it's just that really good special effects are so superior to what was available 10 years ago...

it kind of has me worried...

plus, it's hard to comprehend that these movies are already a decade old..holy shit I'm getting old fast..
