Default Total failure for Walmart HD Download service

http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/to...d-service.aspx

It seems that "near DVD quality" downloads at a cheap price and backed by all studios has failed...utterly. Discuss. OK so its not true HD. Sue me. It really begs the question as to what kind of technology is required, both on the provider-end and user-end, to make HD DL viable. Thankfully, there is BLU-RAY!!

By the time companies realize that the technology isn't yet there for digital distribution, the infrastructure will actually be there, and we'll have to wait an extra 5 years. Dumbasses.

A guy I worked with was certain that downloading will replace all physical media...I told him not any time soon...

Bottom line, unless you are computer savvy and have 20 TB storage, you won't download and store movies...it's cheaper and easier to buy physical media...also, time downloading is longer than driving to BB, Target, Walmart etc and buying the movie...

Nothing substitutes direct handling...touching, feeling, grabbing and inserting...

I disagree. The infrastructure is there, albeit limited. Broadband is available to almost all homes who would care for HD content. Apple seems to have the pieces in place but they need to make some minor tweaks to the hardware. I think consumers will go for HD digital downloads for rentals but not as a replacement for permanent `ownership'. The movie studios are also fearful -- and greedy -- to get seriously into this arena. TiVo is another who is heading down the path of implementing the infrastructure along with Amazon.

Default The question is...

How expensive is the journey down said path?

How long does it take?

What choices will be available at the end of that path?

Yes, our technology is sophisticated enough in theory but just think. How long is it going to take to download a 50 GB movie. And where are you going to store it? Personally, I can't see more than one movie fitting on my hard drive, considering I need it for other things... like.... everything else....

The Real Problem with HD Downloads is because of the limitations we have on Bandwidth. We do not have the infrastructure in place here in America to hanlde the speeds needed to make it acceptable. However we are far behind a lot of the world as far as that is concerned. I could see HD Downloads taking off in Japan and Parts of Europe where the access speeds are well over 10x the fastest available here. Still, even with that I believe it will only be a replacement for Rentals.

HD space is getting to be less of a concern everyday. 10 years ago a 1 gig drive was pretty huge. Now we are talking about multiple Terabyte drives coming out next year. The real problem once you get it downloaded is how do you get it to more than just the Display the Computer is plugged up to. To get True HD (1080p) it requires HDMI connections and there is no cheap or easy way to distribute that throughout a house.

There are a lot of obstacles for the distribution of HD to get around. I'm sure it will get there eventually, quicker then we might think, but in the meantime the best way to get HD media is through our Blu-Ray players.

In 5 to 10 years most of these issues won't be issues anymore.
I've said before that it's never going to be like the DVD days anymore, blu-ray is going to be a smaller part of a larger HD media ecosystem, but that's okay, it doesn't need to be 100 percent of the market to be a success.

Personally I was planning on making an HTPC back in 2004 in which I'd just store all the ripped DVD's on HD's.
Space and bandwidth isn't an issue for me, been running on 16 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up for some time now, and that's only going to get faster.

all the format war pansis that wont buy until the war is over keep saying that hd DL's will be the future. I think not. I kind of like OWNING theDVD's and physically having them. Hard drivs can be deleted and computers can crash and break. Then there goes hundreds of dollars in movies and time spent DL-ing them.

plus... some people dont even know how to check their email and now they'll be asked to search, pay for and download via internet in addition to having the required computer components i.e. memory and such

I feel the same way. Plus the fact that I can't take a movie that I bought to a friends house or let them borrow my movies.

I totally get what you are saying but I'm sure there would be some kind of password or IP Address tag that lets you dl it again, but maybe not. which is why I wont be on the front lines on this one

dl is crap and it will never work...it just took 3 hours to download transformers on 360..even though i i already watched it for free on the internet(someone else wanted to see it lol) and what happens when a hd full of movies dies? take 2 weeks to redownload them and after you buy a new hd? i think not...there will always be physical media unless its like 2025
