Can you use a cd player to read a dvd? It's the same thing basically. The pits of a Blu-Ray disc are smaller and more densely packed than on a dvd and so cannot be read by a dvd lens. Blu-Ray uses a narrower wavelegnth frequency to read it's discs. Dvd lasers use a longer wavelegnth and so cannot read Blu-Ray discs. Also, Blu-Ray discs transfer information at a higher rate, (36MBps), compared to dvd which is roughly 10MBps, (I think).
