Bale's performance fell kind of flat to me, the action sequences were a bit choppy, the non-IMAX footage is weak, etc. Take away the outstanding performances of Eckhart and Ledger and the movie is mediocre or worse, even with Oldman, Caine and Freeman in it.

But how many of those films do you think will potentially have a lasting impact, on some way? Of course, this is pure speculation at this point in time. I see The Fighter being a genre film that will be admired for some time, but never considered an "all-time great." I think Black Swan will gradually become somewhat obsolete, aside from Portman's performance. Hell, Sophie's Choice isn't talked about too much anymore despite having arguably the greatest female performance of all-time, and it's a far superior film. Social Network has little lasting power imo. Haven't seen Tangled or Dragon, so can't judge. Inception, believe it or not, I think has the best chance of having somewhat of a lasting impact, even though it certainly wasn't my top film of the year. To me, it's just the type of film that will always have a following and may gradually become more appreciated. In any event, there isn't much depth.

Just judging films based on how well they entertain me, rather than which ones won the best awards or which actor was in what, my vote goes to 2008.

While you list a lot of films that I personally think are "throwaway films," I too think 2008 was a deeper year than people think. Most people look at it and say "oh, Slumdog won...that year must've sucked." In actuality, whether you like Slumdog or not (which was the deserving best picture of those nominated), the year was deep. The Dark Knight came in around 15 on my list for the year and Wall-E at around 18. Don't forget Summer Hours and Everlasting Moments came out that year too.

I agree completely but I respect Al's take on it--it's a film that despite the flaws I personally think it has, which Al acknowledges may be there, it's still a film that resonates with him, which is great. There are certainly films that I like that have a lot of flaws but resonate with me, in spite of the flaws. In the end, that's what matters.

As for your comments Darth, I've been a vocal critic of the film (which I gave 3 stars out of 4 I believe, due to its entertainment value) for its editing, direction, and laughably cliche themes and thematic scenes. I agree with you that Eckhart was outstanding, and I think his performance got kind of lost in the shuffle. Sure, Ledger was great and deserved the Oscar, but it bordered on overacting. I think Eckhart wasn't far behind him in terms of his performance.

The Eagle

Abrupt cinema going expirence to see the latest nothing special film.

It's good, but it isn't anything special

Acting's good, but it isn't anything special

Action's good (and fair gory for a 12A), but it isn't anything special

Script does it's job, but it isn't anything special

Cinematography' alright, but it isn't anything special

(You get the idea)

The only reason I needed to post my review A.S.A.P was because 1) I'd forget I'd even saw it by tomorrow, and 2) It's ending is a load of cheese, seriously all it need was a freeze frame high five and this film would of got a whole new wave of credibility from me, and critical slating from others.

Only real complaint is Jamie Bell's character motives seem to be a bit muddled up just to keep the audience wondering who's side he's on, though when it's revealed what his motives have been, some of the things he does earlier in the film make little sense. That and people get dicapitated and limbs fall off, but Channing Tatum gets crushed by a chariot and only gets a scratch on his forehead.

but like I said, it's nothing special

Quality of the blu-ray has nothing to do with quality of the movie

This isn't directed specifically at you, but just out there in general.

I HATE when people say that. "Take away X and movie Y would not be as good"
Whatever they are talking about is PART OF THE MOVIE; you can't take it away and judge the movie without it.

It's like saying "Take away Darth Vader and Star Wars isn't as good" or "Take away Johnny Depp and the Pirates movies aren't as good".

While it may be true...it's ridiculous to say because those are pieces of the puzzle that makes a film what it is.

While I highly disagree with the bolded, I completely agree with the underlined. Eckhart got lost in the storm of praise that Ledger got; he was very much deserving of praise of his own.

I dunno if I would go that far, but it was a pretty damn funny scene. I almost wish I bought Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs when it was on sale late last year. I liked it better than I thought I would and I know I'll have the urge to watch it again. Maybe one of these months...

I saw Ponyo about a month ago and well it wasn't for me either. I did not enjoy the animation, story was alright but it just not a movie that hold a lot of punch with me

Guess you were none too impressed by it then.Maybe you're right,but think it might be a stayer depending on the stayingpower of facebook itself.To me it wasn't DF best movie,but it was in this decade.Think maybe DF is the best director working with actors amongst the hollywood establishment.Can't fault one performance in the movie.I am almost adicted to the movie these days,but the fad will wear off I guess.Doesn't have the depth of neither Se7en or FC,but extremely well-made.Anyone want to venture an analyzis of the rowing scene with Grieg's Mountain hall's alternativ take?It was the stand-out scene in the movie.Why were they filming it like it was a miniature set?A comment on the harvard establishment?Oh,well.Bought the music cd,and it is very well made.One last disjointed thought:Feel somewhat that many movies these days(last two decades:90's and 00's)are kind of like a series of musicvideos linked together Like better original scores written for the movie and not the charts.

Is that because of the fan-boy base?Was on sale,and bought it to check if my original opinion was too harsh.It wasn't.While viewing it for the second time,it just came out boring.There is not much character development-as in none,and for a movie trying so desperate to be deep,it comes off as a series of moments disjointed to me.It felt to me like a moviegame without the interaction,and that's the worst kind.No offence to those who like it,but I'm not one of them.

About the Black swan.Think it was a very hit-and-miss movie.Just drifted through the movie without connecting,but the ending was very good,although one could really see it coming a mile off.It felt kind of like The hurt locker.The director trying hard to come to a point where you had to engage the suspention of disbelief rather actively.There are huge wholes in the movies,but as an experience they are greater than the sum of their parts.Black swan is obviously better,but they share commonalities.

Enter the Void

Second viewing.

I've pretty much had this film stuck in my head since my first viewing a few weeks ago. Watched it again today and really enjoyed it much more and followed it better than before. A dark, depressing, thoughtful film that while containing its fair share of odd moments also has plenty of great ones that speak volumes.

Visuals, cinematography, and atmosphere are all top notch

dammit! another blind buy. another film leaving me feeling

i liked Tangled. but that was pretty much it.

some funny moments sure, along with about sixty billion generic, Disney cliches that are done to death. and i've only seen about 10 Disney animated films and am quite sick of them. i can't imagine someone seeing all 50 of their animated full feature lengths and not getting sick of this tried and true (but for me tiresome and dull) formula.

Pascal stole every scene he was in. what an adorable little guy he is!

felt super long for being only 91 minutes, which isn't good.

and i had such a good run for awhile

honestly i forgot that this was Disney, which usually means cheesy feel good crap that is hollow and cold. and then a bunch of people said, "but wait! it's not like a regular Disney film! it's special and not like what they usually make!" (including one water-based member who visits this forum quite regularly

) which made me think this would be different from the standard Disney films, which i don't enjoy a whole lot (aside from a select few which i absolutely love) but i guess i was wrong

will be keeping it though since i didn't hate it and it may grow on me, we'll see
