I have the 60A3000 and the manual states that if you get Jitter on 24p content to turn the motion enhancer off, the motion naturalizer, and cinemotion off. I don't know how many of these settings the XBR4 has but I would turn any extra processing off for that input. See if that helps.

I thought 1080p24 was for film content.

Was it noticeable before or after you read the threads here or elsewhere?

Thanks for the interesting thread folks, I'll mess w/ the motion settings and 24p stuff tonight and let you know what I come up w/.

I'm thinking I might need to turn all the motion stuff off for animated film, but not live action. I saw an improvement w/ it on for example in Sahara in the beginning...

I didn't watch the movie until after I read the posts and articles about EE. So I don't know if I would have recognized it or not.

Subconciously - you were seeing the "EE" due to what you have read. Just like when you watch a movie - you don't notice how much people blink until you look at it and that is now all you notice until your mind goes elsewhere.

That may be because no other movies have 2-D representations of people and objects using solid colors and black outlines around each object. Heck, regardless of display processing, a less-than-optimal connector or cable run can give a slight flaw in the picture that would result in the impression of EE on this type of picture.

The Simpsons BD does have some EE. I'm not sure if that is in the master or not, but it is there on the BD. It's only really noticeable if you know what to look for or you have a gigantic screen(100 inches or more). Aside from that the BD is flawless and I would give the video a 9.75 out of 10.

It might have been on film in the movies, but it lives on the computer and went direct to Blu-ray from a computer. Same with all other animation titles, such as Pixar's Ratatioulle. Crank was also a "film" but was shot digitally and so it doesnt use 24fps. So if I had to guess, I would say the Simpsons movie should NOT be running at 24, but rather 30/60. I could be wrong though.

Yep, wrong. HD digital movie cameras are 24fps. Animation generated or assembled on computer for theatrical presentation is 24fps.

The stuff some people call EE seen on The Simpsons BD is 'ringing.' You don't see it on the footage from some of the trailers, so it's something that was done to the master used for the BD. It still looks great on a calibrated display. It's subtle, unless you process the image further with artificial sharpening, etc.

Thanks!! I turned the Cinemotion off (was on Auto1), but didn't seem to make a difference. I turned the Motion Enhancement OFF and the Detail Enhancement OFF. That seems to have fixed any "weirdness" with the character motion. Looks much better now; no flickering.

However, some backgrounds are still weird. Let me paint you a picture. The scene near the beginning where the Simpsons are walking late to church, and you see thier shadows thru the windows. The whole panning piece there is blurry (the window frames, at least; the family is smooth). If I turn Motion Ehancer ON it's smooth with a touch of jitter on the lines, but then I get the weird character motion flicker.

Same thing on the scene where Kent Brockman is reporting, and there is a library or something behind him while he walks. With ME off he's fine, but the building behind him blurs w/ a slight shimmer.

Is this normal, or is my XBR4 still configured improperly?

Oh, I also turned off the /24, and it didn't change.

Overall, this film looks great!! I just want to be sure that I'm seeing what I'm supposed to be seeing. =D

BTW, in this fiddling process I turned on that Superwhite feature and things are a bit brighter now w/o upping the backlight. =)

How can I tell if I'm seeing 1080p/24? I'm using a PS3 and my tv is a Mitsubishi WD-73733 1080p tv, signal is being passed through a Yamaha RX-V1800 receiver, which is supports 1080p/24. Will the PS3 tell me if it's outputting at 1080p/24 when I hit the display button? I'm not sure if my tv supports 24fps or not.

Not sure. When I hit the Display button on my XBR4, it shows "1080/24p HD".

I can't find anything about the Simpsons Movie to complain about on Blu-ray. This is simply a terrific disc.

I'm not complaining, just trying to figure out if it's "normal."

So my setup is borked? Everyone here has perfectly smooth backgrounds 100% of the time? Any other XBR4+PS3+1080p/24 owners?

*sniff*

What do you mean you don't get 'perfectly smooth backgrounds'? Movies, being 24fps, are never perfectly smooth with motion. (This is why manufacturers have attempted to add optional motion enhancement features, which can never be perfect.) What exactly are you complaining about?

Maybe you have an issue with LCD display devices in general? Try a Plasma set, which is 'faster' and has higher visible resolution for in-motion material than the best LCDs.
