I still might try and see if I can come up with some way of doing that though with these extra discs.

I've never read the Hobbit and after watching the video blog I think I might have to read it next. I love the Lord of the Rings movies and can't wait for this!

The Hobbit is a great fun read, but just remember if you have read LotR, it is very very different. The Hobbit is more of a childrens story. Its still GREAT, don't get me wrong, its just different is all.

I have the VHS Star Wars OT (theatrical editions), widescreen, THX boxed set in superb condition. They were probably watched only twice and only on a very high-end S-VHS deck. I'm willing to sell to anyone who would like this. Considering all the people who think their childhood has been "raped" by Lucas because he's not re-releasing the original theatrical unmodified editions, you'd think someone would want this. Make an offer. U.S. only.

I've tried to read LotR probably six different times and have never gotten through it. I think the farthest I got was to Strider. I've always felt like I should read it. Maybe reading the Hobbit will inspire me to do that.

Ian Holm to Appear in the Hobbit

While there will be plenty of new faces in The Hobbit, the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel will also be a bit of a reunion. In addition to Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Bret McKenzie (albeit in a different role), and Orlando Bloom, Director Peter Jackson has announced that Ian Holm will be reprising his role as the elder Bilbo Baggins. Martin Freeman stars as the young version of Bilbo. Writing on his official Facebook page [via TheOneRing], Jackson clarifies some confusion from the end of his first Hobbit video blog:

If you were an actor who appeared in the original trilogy, now would be the time to start feeling hurt. The Hobbit will be broken into two parts. Part 1 is set for December 2012 and Part 2 will come out in December 2013.

Might be a good start for you then. I read the Hobbit I think 3 times before I tackled LotR. And at that time I still didn't quite get LotR. The Hobbit is still Awesome though, the first time I read it I was 10 and it was immediately my favorite book of all time. still is.

The Hobbit is a much shorter book, and a much more simple read. Also, since it takes place before LOTR, it would be the best place to start.
You don't have to sit down and read LOTR in one sitting. Sometimes, it takes me a couple of months to read it. Take your time, it's not a race!

I think the big problem I had last time is I was trying to read it before Fellowship came out, and I was trying to read Harry Potter before that came out. It was too much for my fragile little mind.

That's what I think. I could see them "bookending" The Hobbit by starting, and ending with old Bilbo either reading, or just talking to Frodo(and possibly others?), and then fading to the story.



Edit - "As readers of “The Hobbit” know, the tale of “The Downfall of The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit or There and Back Again,” are contained in the fictional “Red Book of Westmarch.” In Peter Jackson’s LOTR films, the book is shown on screen and written in by Bilbo and Frodo and handed off to Sam Gamgee. (Not explained on film are Sam’s progeny later having the book and being Wardens of the Westmarch — hence the book’s title.)

The fictional book, and either the telling from it or the reading of it, will establish Frodo in the films experiencing Bilbo’s story. Viewers are to learn the tale of ‘The Hobbit’ as a familiar Frodo gets the tale as well.

Since the speculation is now everywhere around the interwebs, TORn can confirm that as of now, the plans are to feature Frodo in the opening sequence of the films"

Former EastEnders star Rob Kazinsky has quit his role in The Hobbit, it has been confirmed.

The actor had been cast as Fili in the films, which started production in New Zealand last month.

However, director Peter Jackson confirmed on Facebook that Kazinsky has left the J.R.R. Tolkien adaption due to "personal reasons". His role will be recast.

"I am sad to report that Rob Kazinsky, who was cast in the role of Fili, is having to leave The Hobbit and return home, for personal reasons," Jackson said. "Rob has been terrific to work with and his enthusiasm and infectious sense of humour will be missed by all of us.

"I should say that Rob's departure will not affect ongoing filming of The Hobbit, nor will it impact work done to date, as we had yet to film much of Fili's storyline.

"At the moment we are shooting scenes featuring Bilbo without the Dwarves, which will give us time to find a new Fili. I'll keep everyone posted with updates as they come."

Jackson recently confirmed that Sir Ian Holm would be returning as Bilbo Baggins.
