Default Toshiba's brilliant strategy for their next moves...

Absolutely Brilliant, next they play to destroy their laptop PC business.

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakin...icle_id=110708

Quote:
Toshiba is now expected to further promote installation of HD-DVD drives in personal computers, targeting users who watch movies on their PCs, the Nikkei business daily said.

"The core of its turn-around plan is to capture those who watch DVDs on personal computers, a popular practice in the United States," the newspaper said.

Unbelievable, whoever is responsible for their HD-DVD business should be poleaxed. They need to wake up and smell the coffee. Their laptops have suffered in quality in recent years, now they want to put HD-DVDs in all of them?

Not to mention that Toshiba would be incuring a pretty large extra cost at a time where laptops are under extreme pricing pressure.

If they charge for the HD DVD drive, and they'll lose more market share.
If they don't, they'll lose money.

wow! could they be more wrong. i don't know anybody who watches movies on their compuer unless they are bootlegged or something like that.

Im assuming this is their answer to Warner?

They are just pissing away money now.

Its really intresting that Paramount/Universal havn't spoken up, remember when Parmount happened, nearly all the studios made some form of PR that said they were still behind blu-ray.

I mean, I expected major releases to help offset Warner and major releases at cheap prices. this is really, sad thtat this is what they come up with.

So they canceled everything HD DVD related at CES to find out what direction to go in next and re-group and THIS is what they come up with. I'm very glad that I have never bought a Toshiba product in my life and will be avoiding them FOREVER. What a bunch of idiots that run that company.

To bad no other PC/Laptop maker exclusively supports HD DVD. They are all either neutral (Like HP and Acer) or Blu-Ray exclusive (Like Dell and Lenovo). But the good thing here is they will go out of business if they try to keep HD DVD alive.

Ummm... they were already going to do this this year, remember? So it's not really news and the article doesn't actually say WHO is expecting them to follow this course of action.

I'm still hoping the Toshiba laptop I'm required to buy in September won't have an HD DVD drive in it (unless it's a dual format drive maybe).

I'd like to see Toshiba just self-destruct. They really deserve it based on their actions.

It's not unusual for folks to watch movies on a laptop ... some business travelers, kids at swim meets waiting to compete, etc. But I agree they will be pissing away money and putting their laptop business line at a competitive disadvantage. Why not just put a laser disc drive, or a betamax drive in? HD-DVD is quickly becoming just another obsolete format. Insane. Heads will be rolling over this.

I believe I read where Apple will be putting Blu-ray drives in their laptops. Apple sure reads the market well.

...and Microsoft will help Toshiba nail the coffin by selling a blu-ray add-on drive for the 360. ;-)
