Actually it rose to $1.5B after they announced that.

The thing to remember is the XBOX has the 1 year advantage... oh and the $1 billion red ring of death problem.
And Gates did not mention anything about HD DVD or XBOX in his last (and final) keynote. This tells me that he is not going to be too upset when it dies. He has already separated M$ from it and made sure they could too... why else would the 360 not have an HD DVD player built in?

Look at the sales from last year on the 360 and compare them to the sales of the PS3 this year. Then do the same next year... look at this previous year's 360 sales and then at the following year's PS3 sales (at the end of the year of course)... i bet that the amount is close or the same... and probably will grow more for the PS3.

Let's not forget the annoucement from MS that they will pay out 1 billion for repairs to the 360 this past year thru this year. That has to come out of somewhere.

Actually he did it correctly... 500,000m = 500,000,000. Americans, even those in the financial media, assume that "m" or "M" means million but it does not. It means 1,000. "MM" means million. It comes from Roman numerals not from the letter "M" in "million".

Actually it does because all of that revenue probably equates to barely any profit given the RROD issues. Therefore the $150MM is pure expense right to the bottom line.

I would think Xbox Live downloads are high profit.. Does not break down the numbers in detail though. so it is hard to tell what is from what.

Not bad for its first year only a $1 Billion difference in sales for the device, accessories and games. Considering the X360 1 year release advantage it will be interesting to see what 2008 holds.

Wow.

Generated 3.5$ billion in total revenue, yet the hardware division of MS still netted -2$ billion...

Yes, and those numbers were already released for the 2007 fiscal year for Microsoft a while ago.

For a slightly less investor minded assessment, look to gamespot http://www.gamespot.com/news/6175367.html

EDD is bleeding funds... And as a sidenote. X-Box Live profits are seperate from EDD profits, those fall under OSB.

[ add / edit ]
OSB is also operating at a loss currently as well, I suspect much of that are initial investment costs for the infrastructure for live.

How many xlive members are there last year? Last I heard, there were 8.5 million subscribers ...

8.5*$60/yr = $510 mil
RROD writeoff = $1000 mil

$3500 - $10000 - $510 = $1.9 billion

1. They said 10M at CES.
2. That includes free memberships.
3. Many people have multiple free memberships just like on PSN.
4. They probably padded their real number to hit the nice round 10M figure.
5. No-one (intelligent) pays $60 for an XBL membership.

By the way, expect Microsoft to include the free games they're giving away for poor XBL service over Christmas next time they release stats for 'total' and 'paid/premium' XBL downloads.
