I'll pass on plasma. If a 42" plasma was enough to heat up a room through a cold winter, I don't want to know what a 150" plasma television can do. I'd say your aircon bill would be increased by quite a few fold.

Oh c'mon. What is vertical rez, about 1720, or something like that? When you double for upconverstion, that is one thing. Beyound that it is like using your digital zoom on your camera. Diminishing returns.

Not saying it is a waste, just saying 4k is not practical right now. It probably has more of a future as a projector for theaters and such.

Not so far. But the hardware proceeds the software.

Also the introduction of the technology to create 2160p will drive the costs down of making 1080p.

How would you even transport something that large. I don't think that would fit through any standard door. You would have to have a giant front door to install this in your house.

Bingo...

Who the hell cares about having 2160p resolution? So our blurays will look like SD-DVDs on it

1080p isnt even needed until you have 50+ inches. The average tv isnt even close to that big. This is just for bragging rights. They wont ever seriously make this.

Why bother? Blurays arent 2160p, video games arent, and broadcasts wont even be 1080p for years. So what exactly would you watch on that thing? Anything else would look like how SD does on our tvs now.

I wonder whether such a thing could be considered for small digital theaters?

I wonder how much time and money that took them to make. I would not want to transport that thing around.

Actually if it is 4k it means it has 4000 horizontal lines of definition or more accurately 4320 lines.
2160 lines would be a 2K

I am so sick of hearing this. 720p is too low for a 40" LCD display. I can easily see the pixels.

I have a small apartment so I cannot sit more that 7 feet away from the TV in my sig. I can definately tell the difference between 720p and 1080p from that distance.

Whether you can easily tell depends on your available viewing distance or how close you decide to sit from the screen. Even if I was about to sit further away, I would still notice a difference between a 720p and 1080p display in the 40" range regardless of whether I was able to see the individual pixels.

Not true. The average person with "20/20" vision can see to about 150 microradians (some studies have suggested as good as 125 microradians) with object edge misalignment detection as good as 25 microradians. Thus it's all in how close you sit to the screen. A crisp 30" display with a great source of imagery can easily let you see the difference between SD and 1080p HD.

Will they make this as a "limited production" item or is it just for show? Who knows. I doubt Panasonic does at this point. It will depend upon interest generated among a select client base over the next few months.

Besides this is not the real top end. E&S has been shipping their 4k x 8k "Video Wall" projector system for some time now. However, this clearly has special imagery inputs.

Upscaled 1080p HD? You know they will be coming in less than 5 years. Expensive? Certainly? But I'd be surprised if they don't exist.

No.

4K with regard to Digital Cinema is 2160 x 4096. Check out the actual Digital Cinema standard.

Panasonic's system is a bit less than that at 2160 x 3840.

Well this probably has pro uses for the time being, like watching digital dailies and so on.
