I have heard(I can't remember where) rumors that Mutt will be more of the lead in the next one, with Indy being more of the curmudgeony old dad, like Sean Connery in 'The Last Crusade'. I could see them going this way, but I really hope not.
I've also heard that it might have something to do with the Bermuda triangle.

The Bermuda Triangle rumor came out a long time ago and died pretty quickly. I do keep hearing about Mutt becoming the new Indy character after Ford get's to old and really hope they don't do that or at least get 1 more movie out of Ford as it looks like he wants to do another if they can get a good script.

Yeah, there's a lot of people who are saying-- "no, just stop, Indy IV was horrible!"

But I disagree. Now, I didn't hate Indy IV-- I didn't think it was particularly worse than Temple of Doom (which was previously my least favorite of the trilogy). But I was mildly disappointed with it, and didn't feel like they did Indy justice in that film-- in fact, I'm hoping for an eventual review by one Mr. Plinkett to compliment his Star Wars Prequel reviews.

But my argument is that if KotCS was a failure, then they HAVE to make a fifth film. The original Indy films have already been "tainted" by KotCS, so at worst, there will be two bad new Indy flicks instead of one. But, if they just learn from their mistakes and really knock it out of the park, redeeming both Indiana Jones and themselves in the process, that would pretty awesome.

The original three had a fair share of supporting characters, and they were all fairly rich characters, but Indy was the obvious focal point.

And more practical effects and less stupid humor/action. The Tarzan LeBeef and the snake scenes make me feel embarrassed that I'm watching it.
I also highly agree with this. The movie should be more of a throwback to Raiders in this regard. Raiders had much more of Indy by himself, having to explore bizarre locations and work his way past traps and enemies without help. KotCS didn't have almost any moments like that-- the closest was when it was just him and Mutt in the graveyard I believe.

I actually thought it was pretty funny, when Mutt got nervous, he started combing his hair.

This is one series that needs to die. The first film is a classic and one of the greatest films ever made, then it all went down hill from there until that awful film from a few years ago.

The Last Crusade is still my favorite Indy film to date and don't think it went down hill in any way from Raiders. Didn't like Temple of Doom but also didn't find it that bad or as bad as most movie sequels. If they get a good script and story put together I gladly welcome another movie and think this franchise still has lie in it if taken in the right direction.

Same here.
Last Crusade is the most entertaining to me without a doubt. I enjoyed KotCS a lot. It is an entertaining film. I hope we get more.

I agree. The other films can be watched but thats about where it ends. Temple is actually lousy. Crusade has some cool stuff in it but still pales in comparison to the original. KOtCS was barely watchable. I dunno - does the phrase "this has run its course" apply here?

The Last Crusade is my favorite out the bunch as well. Connery and Ford were like PBnJ....it just worked.

Thats fine and all but money made doesnt always reflect a films quality. Transformers 2 raked in trillions and was almost the worst film evah. Box office receipts are irrelevant in this context unless we were discussing the money aspect of films which we arent.

Of course Box Office Receipts are relevant. We're talking about reasons why this franchise should keep on running. Relevant is the perfect word.

Any film that makes 3/4 of a BILLION dollars worldwide is going to justify a sequel. Sure - you didn't like it, but people came out to see it. Millions of people then bought it on DVD & Blu-ray.

If you prefer review aggregates:

77% Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
89% Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
85% Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
94% Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)

By comparison:

20% Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
57% Transformers (2007)

Or better yet:

80% Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
67% Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
62% Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
78% Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
97% Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
94% Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

Of course all of this is subjective. The point is that just because YOU didn't like KOTCS and various other internet fanboys didn't like it - there is an appetite for the material, and overall, it's received well.

All time comparisons are nice, and they are good to frame discussions about why Avatar really isn't the most attended movie of all time, but you also must take into account that as time marches on, people do not go to the theater more than once for a film nearly as often, and people wait for video plenty. There is also far more competition in the marketplace. I don't get to see all the films I want to see in the theater once, much less twice or more. By the time I haven't been to the theater to see Thor - POTC4, Bridesmaids, Hangover2, X-men, and Super8 have all arrived to distract my attention.

May 24, 1989 : Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade. The last wide release film was Field of Dreams on April 21. The next films in competion were Star Trek V the following weekend, then Ghostbusters II (different audience segment) then Batman June 23rd. Beyond that there were a relative few tentpole films for the rest of the summer:

The year Raiders came out, there was no such thing as another blockbuster:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark Paramount/Lucasfilm Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, John Rhys-Davies, Paul Freeman, Ronald Lacey, Denholm Elliot $384,562,121
2. On Golden Pond Universal Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Jane Fonda $119,285,432
3. Chariots of Fire Warner Bros./Fox Ben Cross $108,185,706
4. Arthur Warner Bros. Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli $95,461,682
5. Stripes Columbia Bill Murray $85,297,000
6. The Cannonball Run Fox Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, and Farrah Fawcett $72,179,579
7. For Your Eyes Only United Artists Roger Moore, Carole Bouquet, and Topol $58,972,904
8. The Four Seasons Universal Alan Alda, Carol Burnett and Sandy Dennis $54,812,802
9. Reds Paramount Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson $50,427,646
10. Body Heat Warner Bros. William Hurt and Kathleen Turner $42,365,581

Just to throw my opinion in. I really like KOTCS. It through me back to when I watch the others as a kid.

The Reason most people did not like it is because a lot of stuff has been rehashed.

But imagine if this movie came out 10 years ago. It would have been received different, or if Raiders came out today, it wouldn't hold out so well, to everything else. Just my opinion.

Every Indy film is a rehash of some other adventure. The real turn off was bad Russian accents and aliens. Freaking ALIENS!!!!!

I really enjoyed the movie...just in a different way than you. You see, when you post your emotions online, it's really glaring to see who the fanboy really is (since you brought it up). Also, my post was in response to yours saying the new Indy movie made more than the others...which is misleading due to inflation.

Enjoy your day.

Interdimensional beings to be precise, and while it wouldn't have been my first choice, it connects very clearly to mayan myths, putting it squarely in the Indiana Jones wheelhouse. Indiana Jones has always blended adventure with archaeology and religious belief. It seems the preference has been towards the 2 Judeo/Christian stories.

Maybe we should get Jesse Ventura to direct the next film. Please Mayan myths and ancient aliens? Someone's been watching too much SYFY.
