Jumping in to defend The Ward. I am a Carpenter fan but have been dissapointed recently as are most people. I went into The Ward thinking it would just be another mediocre attempt but it actually has some good stuff and agree with the earloier post that the last act makes the movie. It caught me off guard and begs for another viewing. It is his best film since In the Mouth of Madness (not saying much) but it is a shame that it won't do well because of lack of promotion and overall handling of the film.

I was able to watch this movie and I thought it was very disappointing. It had potential with Carpenter directing and a cast of mostly hot young actresses, but the script is terrible. The "twist" in the last act is just a cliche at this point.

The Ward is pretty bad. Its far from being the worst horror movie out there but it is far from being replayable. Ill buy it to go with all my other JC blu's and DVD's but probably will never watch it again. once was enough but may give it one more spin to see if I just was expecting too much.

I wondered if it might be shown on HDNet Movies, as they sometimes preview smaller movies before their theatrical runs. I didn't find it there, but FiOS has it On Demand - but for $10.99!
Most On Demand movies are $5.99 for SD or $6.99 for HD, so it's a shock that they think people will shell out $10.99 for this movie. I love Carpenter, but will wait to rent it on BD. Doug |

I am a big John Carpenter fan and yes some of hos later movies were disappointing but I will pick this up on release date as a blind buy because I like Amber Heard as well. The preview looked good but I dont have my expectations to high so I shouldn't be disappointed.

Right? They could hardly market it on Amber's name as she's still not a household name. I am a fan and have been since All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, but most don't even know who she is. She was awesome in Drive Angry, but it doesn't matter as nobody saw it. Just because they didn't give it a wide release with big promotion doesn't mean it's a terrible movie. Bad movies get wide releases all of the time. Guess they just didn't feel it would do that well and that it wasn't worth the effort. There are a lot of great small titles out there.
Another reason this probably didn't get a wide release is that the plot is so similar to Sucker Punch. They probably figured it was too soon after that movie to give it a big push. I do think they should have given it a wide release though. I'm sure it would have done better than Drive Angry did ![]() Last edited by MikeScott; 06-13-2011 at 10:16 PM. |

I had low expectations and I have to say, I was pleasently surprised... most of the time. It was quite atmospheric and had a few creepy shots here and there. The script was okay. It felt a bit repetitive half way through. The make up and SFX were really good and handmade. Loved it. The jump scares made me actually jump most of the time haha. I didn't expect this to happen and I don't know if it'll happen again on another viewing, but Carpenter is one of the very few horror directors who can actually scare me

I could say the same about Odette Yustman. Hot, but keeps making crap films. * Zombieland was decent, but her part was very small. |

I'm guessing the money wasn't there to give this movie a wide release, but it still could have been marketed even a little bit. Oh well. I'll still at least give this a rent and then go from there though as the trailer did catch my interest.

I love John Carpenter...but had low expectation's going into this since it has flown mostly under the radar since it's completion. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I knew there was supposed to be a twist at the ending, but I honestly didn't realize what it was going to be until it hit. A solid film...in my opinion. But then again, I'm currently reading the book, "Shock Value" which tells the behind the scenes happenings on films such as Rosemary's Baby, The Last House on the Left, Dressed to Kill, and...Halloween. So, I guess I'm a little on the "masters of old school horror" bandwagon right now. ![]() Regardless, I'll be buying this on Blu-Ray. |

It came out in limited release (possibly limited to less than 10 theaters in the US) and so probably only made a couple hundred dollars over the weekend, maybe.

FYI - Box office numbers for the Ward which opened in 11 theaters -
$7,760 Compare this to Sholem Aleichem: Laughing in the Darkness - $18,400 in 1 theater Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest - $120,000 in 4 theaters I guess Carpenter can only hope for better home release numbers. KP |
