There were some areas of great improvement, other bits were average. Same goes for the audio mix. Of all the war films of the 80's it's always had the most "canned" mix and this is still the case. Having said that it was an improvement over the DVD mix and that's the important thing.

Chaos - This one surprised me. It looks like it's going to be your standard Jason Statham action film, has a story that aims a lot higher and ultimately ends up somewhere between the two. It doesn't quite nail the artier concept it's trying to sell but it did make it more interesting for trying. Solid disc all round too.

Layer Cake - A great film which still impresses. Sony's disc is quite good for an early release. Picture quality is strong though some black levels varied. I'm fairly sure a bit of that had to do with the source though as it seems to be something Matthew Vaughn has with his films (e.g. Kick Ass and it's often blue black levels). Sound quality was exceptional. The scene with Duran Duran's 'Ordinary World' was
So the audio was still a bit iffy? I find it hard to watch the DVD when I pick it up, just thinking about the audio.. it sounds so flat and like you said, through a tin can

This would have to be one of my most favourite films - everything in this just works. I upgraded to the blu version about a month ago, and i've already watched it 5 times! And yep, the scene where Morty thumps the living s--t out of Freddie to the Duran Duran song is bang on.

Great movie, and lets hope Nic Cage's wig lasts the third movie...or they'll have to staple some sort of road kill to his head

Yeah. I always remember it being that way though so I think it's just an average mix. A lot of Oliver Stone's films don't have that polish others do, whether it's the picture or the sound.

There were some improvements with better focused LFE content on some of the explosions and dialogue wasn't as muffled, gunfire still sounded boxy and canned and some scenes without ADR had some clarity issues. Not bad, just not great. Without a complete re-mix from the ground up it's probably not able to be improved upon and even though technology today could certainly help some of it there would still be limits on the quality you could pull from the sources (if they're still available).

For the $16 it cost me it was worth it, particularly being that it's a BD/DVD combo and my DVD was stolen a few years back.

Yeah, it's an awesome film. I've read around that the producers of Bond basically decided on the spot that they wanted Daniel Craig after seeing Layer Cake. Some awesome British talent in there. It's also got a sprinkling of Guy Ritchie sensibilities which works big time though it's presented with a bit more spit and polish than Lock, Stock etc.

Haven't seen this yet, but I want to, but I'm still tossing up whether to go for the uncut original versions, obviously not on BD, or the BD cut up and edited version... Suggestions?

And can you go from Shogun Assassin and continue on with the rest of the series? Or better to watch the first and second originals?

Picked up a few bargains from Amazon UK including a couple of blind buys:

We Were Soldiers - seen it before but never on Blu-ray. I've always liked the film and the performances but for some reason have never got around to buying it. At $6.50 delivered a no brainer.
Dawn of the Dead - had my eye on the Arrow release for just about forever. Yesterday's price drop finally put it in the upgrade price range for me. $12.50 delivered!
Rec and Rec2 - never seen them but they have been on my blind buy wishlist since I first heard about the films when released. Really keen to check them out and at $16 for both it's a great price.

The Shogun Assassin BD is 'Uncut' as in terms of violence, but edited yes, in the fact its two films cut together.

I've never seen the original film series so I cant say for sure, but I don't think you can watch Shogun Assassin then continue on with the series. Shogun takes up two of the films I think.

I think you should try out Shogun first, its a short film, so if you don't like it, you havn't wasted much time, and it will save you watching the longer, individual films.

Shogun is seriously awesome though.

Theyre a brilliant series. You should atleast check it out and if you cant wait for it to come out on Blu the dvds are well worth it. Shogun Assassin is just a part of the whole and its not the first film either. I highly recommend it if you like this type of stuff.

Edit: Youd definitly want to watch them uncut.

Thanks guys, I think I'll just go with the proper 6 film series then, I don't like watching edited/cut up films...

Filled with memorable set pieces, iconic characters and violent action, this series more than lives up to its reputation as a pinnacle of Japanese exploitation cinema whose musings on the meaning of honour in a lawless world still resonate today. In White Heaven In Hell alone, Ogami Itt kills 150 people onscreen, the highest body count for a single character in a single film in cinema history. In America, the first two Lone Wolf instalments were re-edited into the legendary Shogun Assassin, the film that single-handedly created legions of new fans of Japanese action cinema upon its release. Originally prosecuted as a video nasty in the 1980s, this hugely influential thrill-ride is presented here along with the original Lone Wolf and Cub series, gorgeously remastered in their original aspect ratio. SPECIAL FEATURES: Freshly remastered, anamorphic, original aspect ratio transfers Newly translated optional English subtitles Original Japanese theatrical trailers for each film Liner notes for each film by Japanese film scholar Tom Mes (midnighteye.com)

Definately an awesome concert. I went and saw them on that tour but I was literally in the last row on the opposite side of the stadium so it wasn't the best view by any means. I have both 'AC/DC Live At Donington' and 'AC/DC No Bull' on DVD - 'No Bull' is pretty average, but I still consider the 'Live At Donington' one of, if not, they best concerts I've seen (albeit not live). Do you have the blu-ray version of this and if so, is it worth the upgrade from DVD?
