I've had the same urges to battle. With the Ultimate Editions and what not, I've been so close on purchasing the HP movies. But I stood my ground and decided to wait! Can't wait to get the Ultimate Collector's Edition.

Wonder if it's the giant replica of Hogwarts like France got when HBP came out.

Just watched the videos posted on last page, the movie looks fabulous, not noticing anything wrong with the colors, some people should just stop whining about this, this is getting ridiculous. And whatever you say "color tone has been changed, bla bla bla", if Jackson and his DP approved it and supervised the transfer, then all this talk is a moot point.

Deal with it, seriously.

It looks as though you took the time to quote my post and format your quote, by removing some of my post, but didn't take enough time to properly read it.

The last screen cap (which you retained) was meant to illustrate the original color grading to make it easier to spot the new one in the capture from the trailer (first screen cap).

Anyway, I went back and edited my post to hopefully make it easier to read quickly:

the real question... is do YOU approve the change and will you be happy with it or are you just dealing with it

just MO but i don't believe in spending money on something and dealing with it

Let's see.. lemme think...

Um... NO.

If Peter Jackson comes out and says: "I fully intended only the first movie to look like you're watching it from the bottom of a swimming pool!" it ISN'T a "moot point." The blu-ray will STILL look like:

A) Defective
B) Crap

... and I STILL won't buy it, and I'll STILL complain.

If you don't want to read it... fine. Go read some other thread, or find a fan site where major-league screw-ups like this was brushed away.

As for the guy who posted that silly "I love the green snow! Middle Earth is supposed to be fantastical!" comment (I'm paraphrasing)... well, did Middle Earth STOP being "fantastical" at the beginning of the "Two Towers"? Why aren't those of you who adore the lovely new green tint upset that it hasn't been applied to the other two films? Or do you make up some other rationalization, like "Well, each film in the trilogy should have a different color scheme... it's the DIRECTOR'S INTENT (cue "Also Sprach Zarathustra").

Seriously. If the whole film came out backwards and reversed, there'd be a crowd here would say: "It looks great! Peter Jackson approved it! I love it! It's an artistic choice! SHUT UP!"

To be honest, I have a feeling with some people that they went into defensive mode because they can't deal with the idea of never again being able to watch one of their favorite movies in its original form (color?)

Wanna bet that everybody will breathe a gigantic sigh of relief if this actually gets undone?

I think blu-ray will stay for quite while, so by all means guys get this new LOTR release.
Ah, gotcha.

It would make a lot of sense for 80+ size displays to go to 4K (2160P) res, even if we kept blu-ray as our source. BD 1080p images upconverted by a factor of 2 over each axis would be easy math, and would smooth out fine edge-counters on text and produce a more "pixel free" picture for those who sit closer than 1.5 screen widths.

Extended: http://blubrew.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/f2.jpg

The extended shot has much greater fine detail, and more natural skin tone compared to the theatrical blu-ray. No green tint that I can see.

Another example without the tint:

Theatrical: http://blubrew.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/f13.jpg
Extended: http://blubrew.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/f14.jpg

It seems like the green tint has been applied to specific scenes, which implies that it was done on purpose.
Regarding the snow scene,

I wonder if the idea Jackson had was to make that scene more ominous... like during a storm or during twilight.

In the original coloration the white snow is "pretty" and makes you feel like their on a tour of the alps ready to find a ski-lodge over the next bend. Maybe it was two picturesque, and so Jackson wanted to change the tone of that sequence to something with a more nefarious overtone.

Perhaps they wanted to make the misty mountains look more misty.

That might make sense if it was the only scene in the movie to be tinted green. What you forget is that this color is added to the entire 200 minutes and not just this one scene. Although this scene is one of those where the discoloration becomes most obvious because it's so bright.

I'm going to rent it first. Then I'll give you my yes or no answer.

In any case, I'm not going to buy it at this pre-purchase price. Has to come down quite a bit before I'll pay that much for a lot of stufff I already own. Already have the EE on dvd.

I agree, I have the EE DVD with all those extras as well, I may even wait for a standalone release of the individual movies. But good luck finding them as a rental - Blockbuster has no listing for them, Netflix rarely gets BD catalog releases, and at $30 a movie I don't think you'll find them at Redbox.

As stated before I will not buy them unless the color issue is corrected.

Which proves that some people are just color blind.

Yes, you are color blind if you can't see the minty teal tint that is present throughout the entire video. Here, look again. This time, click over to YouTube, pick the 720p version and expand it full screen. PAY ATTENTION TO THE BACKGROUND FOG AND MIST.

Not enough? Then look at this one (again, expand it full screen at 720p). Check out the water that has, for the first time, turned a minty teal color.

Now here's one where the teal tint isn't as noticeable. (As has been said all along, it's not as objectionable in certain scenes.) BUT, at the very beginning, just after Gandalf grabs the fireworks and the boys jump into his wagon, look at the grass near the bottom of the screen. I've never seen grass in that shade of green and that's not how that grass looked in previous releases. PAUSE the video at 13 seconds when the smoke is in front of Gandalf's face. The smoke is the same putrid teal tint that (those that aren't color blind) have been complaining about. Pause it at 29 seconds (after the boys have lit the big rocket) and look at the smoke. Teal green!

To be honest, when watching that scene the last thing I am paying attention to is the background colors. Am too intent on watching the fighting. Aragorn's flesh color looks very natural to me.

Agreed. You can see it in the fire when that pops up as well.......ugly. Detail certainly looks fantastic though, but the "green" issue is a big negative and really brings down the whole presentation to some degree IMO.
