Default Redbox Now Renting PS3 Games

Apologies if this was posted already. But Redbox is now renting games for $2/24 hours. Doesn't seem bad at all for those who don't game enough for Gamefly.

I'm looking forward to getting Duke Nuke Forever later today for $2. I used to have Gamefly but just don't have the time anymore. But with this nightly rental, it seems like I can play games I don't want to own (like DNF), beat them in a day or two when I do have time, and pop them back in $2 or $4 later.

Anyone do this yet? What's the availability like?

EDIT:whoops, I realize I spelled renting wrong in thread title...stupid iPad keyboard

I have been renting them for a few months now. Socom 4, Brink, Homefront, and recently Infamous 2 to name a few.
If it's a game your not sure about, it's worth it. With games doing 4-6 hour campaigns I was able to get through Homefront and Socom 4 in a single rental night.

Went to the one by my house and they only had a single Wii game. Hopefully they start stocking more games.

The "test" kiosks have had them awhile, but they only went nationwide this weekend.

In my opinion, it's only worth it for one night and if you plan on knocking something else out in a day. Because most local stores (Family Video, Blockbuster, etc.) rent games for 5 or 6 bucks for 5 days, not to mention Gamefly. But I don't really rent games anyway.

Well I've been using a test kiosk then. But that would mean I had about 10 test kiosks in my area, because I had 5-8 different kiosks I could get a specific title at within a 15 mile radius.

http://www.redbox.com/games

This is what I have at the closest one to me at the moment.

I wish Blockbuster was $5-$6 for 5 days, it's more like $9-$10 after tax.

I haven't rented from them in over year now. Plus all the ones that were in a reasonable driving distance have all been shut down. But the game rentals in my opinion were overpriced & never in stock.

The one cool thing with Redbox is that you can rent your games & movies online & the machine you pick will just hold those titles because you already paid for them. Nice!!

I agree 100%. I always reserve my copy first online. The catch is you have to pick it up by 9pm and return it by 9pm. The only issue I've had with Redbox is on more than one occasion I've gotten off work and rushed to the box to return it by 9 pm and the box is down. So either I drive to the next box or just keep it for 1 more night.
With the kiosks I use the games usually aren't available until a day or two after release, although LA Noire was available same day as release as was Socom 4 also.

Yeah, I hear you but the way I look @ it, I don't mind spending the extra $2 for the convenience factor. But then again that's what Redbox is hoping we'll do!

I'd really go for this if there were games I could get done in a day. I could pick one up from redbox while waiting for my gamefly games to arrive in the mail. Another downer for me is that all the games in the kiosks here are FPS games with the exception of LA Noire and inFamous (and I already have those 2 from gamefly)

Sucks if someone accidentally keeps the game rental for 25 days, you'll end up paying $100+ overall for it
Quote:
For each additional night you keep it, you’ll be charged for another rental period + tax. If you hold onto your disc for 25 days, you'll be charged a one-time fee ($25 + tax for DVDs, $34.50 + tax for Blu-ray™ Discs and $50 + tax for video games) and the disc is yours to keep.

The way I read this, you'll be charged for additional rental periods up to 25 days, after which you simply be charged a flat fee for each media type (not in addition to the extra rental day charges).

So, for a $60 PS3 game that doesn't drop in price, keeping the Redbox copy might be slightly to your advantage.

You may be onto something there. Because keeping a game over 25 days would be the same as making a day one purchase. The only question I have is how hard would it be to trade in said game for credit @GameStop?

Anyways, I went & checked for the closest kiosk to my home & there is not 1 but 2 kiosks setting side by side! I think I'm going to start utilizing these kiosks for games that I'm unsure of ie. Duke Nukem & Deus Ex:HR. That way I don't feel like a bonehead for buying a game that turned out not to be a winner (example: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed). Redbox might be onto something here!

Well, you live in California I see, so of course you were in a test area. Those in lower pop. states didn't have that luxury. But they also don't have $10 rentals apparently. I guess you have inflated prices. But I still maintain that any rental over 3 or 4 days, for most people, would be better off at an actual store than Redbox. But if you're just trying it for a day, than yeah, it's a great service.

That is a good point, a lot have been shut down. We have one left, but it's on the other side of town. However we now have a family video which is about as good as it gets. We don't rent movie very often, but they are about $3-4 for a blu-ray for 5 days, which is half what Redbox would be for the same period. Last time I rented a game (admittedly, about May 2010) it was $5 for a week, which again is much cheaper. But this is my alternative, so this varies by location. I was in three Blockbusters this week and if I remember right, they were all $5 for a week's rental, but stock wasn't great either, save one location.

First off, these don't come with case/manual do they? So if you were to "keep" and buy the game, you would be paying $50 for just the disc, no? My point is on that subject matter is that I have yet to see a game in 2011 that didn't drop below $50 within 30 days. Now I may be wrong, but even Sony titles such as KZ3 and SOCOM 4 have dropped to $45. Noire is now $40, about 30 days later and Portal 2 got dirt cheap a couple weeks ago ($35 I think). Now, you could argue that you would have to wait to pay those prices, but it just comes down to if you're committed to saving money or playing the game irregardless.

Edit: I realize there may be some smaller, less-known games that don't drop that quickly, but I ask, if they are less popular, will they be in the Redbox machines?

Assuming they are just the disc, I believe Gamestop still takes in disc-only trades. I think even Best Buy started taking in disc-only trades recently too, but never tried it.

The price dropping is something I'm adjusting to myself. I watch Amazon now for certain games to drop where before I never really thought about. Except for Day One purchases which are starting to be few & far between I can wait for price drops. I mean just look at Rock Band 3, you can get it new for $20 now!

I just thought he made a decent point about keeping the game to own but honestly, if you wanted a game why hold onto a Redbox copy when you can just snatch up a copy from Amazon on sale?

As far as the local video rental store those are non-existent where I live in North Chicago. I usually just rent from Netflix, PSN & once in a while Vudu myself. But the Redbox game option will be useful for me seeing how I never rent video games because I'm a cheap bastard!!

The thing about reserving online is that the rental period starts from the time you reserve it, not the time you pick it up. So, if you reserve it before midnight and pick it up after midnight, you'll still have to have it back by 9pm that night. If you wait 'til after midnight to reserve and pick up, you won't have to return it 'til 9pm the *next* night.

The convenience factor is nice with Redbox, and with Blockbuster effectively gone, its always welcome to have other options in addition to Gamefly or any other rental services. Still, at $2 a night its not really worth it for those games that might have long storylines/campaigns, but if demos and/or reviews aren't good enough to justify an actual game purchase, then this is definitely the way to go. I figure if I want to try a game out, I'll just play it on one of my multiple sub-accounts so I don't install trophies I may not possibly be going back to on my main profile

Well I rented Duke Nukem last night and will be holding it for 2-3 days and that's the only game I will be able to rent for the next month or so. I don't mind paying $4-6 to play, it definitely isn't a game I would own, although the single player seems pretty lengthy when compared to the jokes such as CoD.

I'm right there with you on that one! I don't rent enough for Gamefly personally but I don't mind dropping $2-$4 on a Redbox rental.

There is a problem with this and its with ISPs. My ISP, Comcast, set their download data cap at 250GB back in 2008. It may sound huge, but I have several people in my house streaming NetFlix, Dish On Demand and Amazon movies. When the PSN came back, I downloaded games as well as previews from the Plus membership to my 3 PS3s. 10 days to go in the month and we have used 170GB. You go over 250GB, they disconnect you and you aren't allowed to resign up for a year to either residential or commercial service. AT&T's cap is 150GB. This becomes more of an issue as more and more companies offer more content to download.

Um...I don't see how that has anything to do with Redbox, since they rent physical media, not downloads, but don't you have more than 2 ISPs in your area? I don't have an internet cap with Cox Cable. I'd tell ya more about it, but the mods deleted my "I love Cox" thread long ago. Wonder why? I totally stayed on topic.
