Lucas was right about the '25-30 percent' thing, though. He was saying that for years after Star Wars came out.

Both versions via seamless branching is perfectly easy to do. Do it, Luca$.
Agree, but seemless branching would be impractical considering how many changes there are. Both films on separate discs is the answer.

We won't know until closer towards the release date, but if the Alien Anthology is anything to go by then it should be regiion free, just don't expect it to be.

I believe that seamless is possible. Close Encounters has three versions on the same disc. It doesn't really matter how many changes there are, it's all about disc space. However, I myself prefer multiple discs, mainly because some players occasionally are problematic in playing discs with multiple angles. Besides, it has been done before with Blade Runner.

On another matter, unlike most, I don't believe that the reason George Lucas' refusal in releasing the theatrical editions has anything to do with greed. If it were, he would simply release both versions and avoid alienating many fans that will refuse to buy the Blu-ray out of frustration and anger, especially nowadays when people can get them for free, albeit illegal, on the net. Not to mention that he could even sell separate editions of each version, and we all know those would sell. Apparently the problem is ego. It's all about what he wants. All that argument that we are the ones who made him a billionaire is meaningless to him. He reasons with simplistic unemotional logic. He once put a product in the market, we bought it, end of story. There's no emotional relevance. Whatever pride he may or may not have for Star Wars is not artistic, it's technical. So to him it's not a work of art that should be preserved for posterity but rather a machine that must always be perfected, like a vintage car that keeps getting more and more upgrades over the years, so that eventually very little of the original remains. EUREKA!!! George Lucas is a Vulcan!!!

It'll probably be region-free, but I am more concerned about the UK copy of AOTC being uncut. If I find out that it's not beforehand, I'll cancel my order and import it.

Good point. Although Ep 3 will up the rating of the set to 12 anyway so maybe they won't cut it. Of course, Lucas has cut some laser hits from Ep 4 anyway when compared to the 1977 release so I'm not too bothered if Kenobi nuts Jango Fett or not.

Eloquently put...

Seriously, I have the same feeling - it's a box-set, with the certificate reflecting the film with the highest rating (ROTS), so the Glaswegian Kiss should be intact.

I have to agree with this and the HDTV versions I have (unaltered) will have to make do. Not sure we'll see an official release for years, if at all.

We as fans can do as much complaining as we want, be he ain't listening to us. And I don't care what anybody else says really, Lucas is Lucas. If you don't know that by now, then Star Wars isn't for you. Bring on this release.

This will depend on how the BBFC work, whether they can take the higher rating which was offered to them originally or if they need to re-submit the film. I'd imagine in the next few months the BBFC will be bombarded with Star Wars documentaries.

They brought out a Limited Edition containing both Original and Special Edition versions on DVD.

Don't see why they can't on Blu-Ray.

I agree. The September release though will be "The George Lucas All-Singing All-Dancing" version which is fair enough. I would be shocked if the original theatricals never make it to Blu-ray in some form or another. I'd wager alternative scenes from the originals will make it onto the September set as well. If I see Han shooting first as a deleted scene I'll be happy enough.

Come September, we'll see... I'd like a special steel tin or something, but not complaining about the package we're getting.

Not a chance. If Lucas gets his way (and he usually does) the theatricals will never be released on any format again. He knows there's demand for them, but still refuses and sticks his fingers up at the fans. It's very personal with Lucas. Star Wars is his baby and he only puts out what he wants to see. TBH, I would not be at all surprised if there ain't been a few tweaks again here and there for the blu-ray release.
BTW. The cave scene which will be included in the set as a deleted scene from ROTJ was recently made. Most fans knew of the scene and up until C5 last year where the scene was shown was just a myth. Storyboards existed for it, but no stills or video footage.
Loads of evidence points to the fact that it was made just to purely wet the fans appetites and to sell the blu-ray boxset.
When constantly asked about this scene Mark Hamill knew nothing about it and had no recolection of filming any such scene.
The opening shots of Vader in the scene have been spliced together from other cut scenes from the film. I know, I have the scenes that they were cut from.

They're generally OK about allowing previously censored material back into a film in a box-set if the material only raises the certificate to that of the highest film in the set.

Is this the case now? It wasn't when Buffy was coming out on DVD - there was a season 3 episode that was cut to a 12 even though the boxset was 15...

Like I said - that was in the days of DVD - their policy may have changed now...
