same reason i am not a big fan of the Hulk. i also prefer my superheroes to actually be SUPER in power. sure, intelligence is a "power" of sorts, but that's part of why Iron Man never interested me. and kind of the same for Batman - because these two just have lots of money.

that's not exciting. almost all sports stars have money and are in shape, surely they could be superheroes if they wanted to! so what makes Bruce Wayne and whats-his-face (Iron Man's real name... Tony Stark!) so special? not much at least to me

however i was a bit surprised by how much i liked Hulk as well. however, i still sold it about a year ago, and don't think it would be one i would ever buy again. unless it reaches $5 territory.

Diesel would not be pleased since The Incredible Hulk is (I think) his favorite of the Marvel Studios movies.

While it is my least favorite of the 4 Marvel Studios movies (The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Thor), I still really like the movie and happily bought it last year after renting it.

Posted my thoughts on The Tree of Life in the official thread:

After much, much waiting I had the pleasure of viewing this film yesterday. I'm a big fan of Terrence Malick's other films, excluding The New World, so I felt safe going into the film knowing it wasn't going to be a conventionally narrative film. Even if you have seen one Terrence Malick film, you should know this.

Needless to say, I think this will end up being Terrence Malick's magnum opus. I know that is a large statement to be making with the great films Malick has made, but I feel it is an accurate one. I can't remember seeing an artistic endeavor like this by anyone. I'm quite confident there will never be a film like this one again. I almost feel a little naive for stating this, as there is much information to be digested from the film and I almost feel that I cannot comprehend the entire message of the film, even if it's just limited to one.

Watching the film I can say that some parts drove me mad. Other parts had such an emotional impact that I rarely ever feel from a film. Why do some parts drive me mad? There's still a part of me that wants to break down every scene in his film and assign some meaning to it, as if it were a piece in a puzzle, and when I can't figure out why it is I almost want to scream that this guy has absolutely no idea what he's doing. Then before I can think of doing that any further the film kicks it up a notch and grabs the senses and offers such a moment of clarity that I can barely put into words what I just saw.

[Show spoiler]The part I'm referring to is the creation of the universe part, bare none my favorite part from the film.

Now, I have to disclose some information that I feel could be a big help to other people who have viewed the film. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I found out recently that I went to High School with Terrence Malick's nephews. Even more interesting, is that the friend I went to go see it with yesterday is good friends with them and knows the family pretty well. At various points during the film, he would lean over to me and state why he thought these certain plot points were in the film. After the film, we leave the theater and we happened to run into Terrence Malick's nephews standing outside. We chatted with them for a little bit, and combined with what my friend told me in the theater and with what they told me themselves, I found out the following information:

[Show spoiler]I learned from my friend that Terrence Malick's brother (the nephew's father) died not too long ago. In the film we learn that Jack's brother dies at the age of 19, which can most likely establish was during combat in Vietnam. Terrence Malick's brother didn't die from combat (I won't disclose how), but I theorize that the element of Jack looking back at his relationship with his brother was drawn directly from Terrence's life and his brother's death. I learned from the nephews that Brad Pitt's character was based on Terrence's father, with the nephews saying that Brad Pitt "played old grandpa just like him". I get the sense from the nephews that he wasn't very popular. All in all I get the felling that this was a very personal film for Malick as he drew elements in the film from real life.

Coupled with the fact that we know the film was shot in Malick's hometown and surrounding areas, I want to theorize that this film is almost auto-biographical in nature. I didn't get to ask the nephews many questions, they were heading into a movie with some friends and I know this might not seem like groundbreaking information to some people, but I thought I would let a few people know who have seen the film and hope they appreciate the film as much as I did.

Overall I feel that I need to view this film a couple more times to completely grasp all the themes. I've been thinking about the film non-stop since I saw it, but when I try to look over all the details I need more information to form a complete analysis.

American Gangster has always baffled me.

It’s directed by the great Ridley Scott, who even in his “off days” does a solid job directing and telling a solid story.

It stars two great Oscar winning actors in Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. Both of whom I enjoy watching in their work, greatly.

It’s a bio-pic, based on a true story, about a heroin drug kingpin. A film that dips into the mafia and drug cartel, a genre I love a great deal.

Yet…. When I first heard about American Gangster, I didn’t have much interest in seeing it. Some of my friends begged me to go see it in the theater, but I just never was THAT interested in it for some reason.

Years ago I bought the blu, watched it once, found the film solid, but nothing more and eventually sold it because I thought, “I’m never gonna wanna watch that again”



A year or so later, here I am owning it. Again. And watching it, again.

While I enjoyed it a bit more than I did previously, it still baffles me as to why I don’t love the film. Brilliantly directed, wonderfully acted, a solid script, an engaging story, a great atmosphere and an interesting cast of characters and motivations… it clicks and works. It’s just not something I love. However, some day, I may. It’s a great entry into the crime genre, but I like many other crime films more.

Glad I own it again, and recommended to almost everyone. I remember when I started this tonight I said, “good god! This is almost three hours?!” (the unrated extended cut) but the time passes very quickly, which I always say is a sign of a great film. American Gangster never lags, never feels cumbersome or stumbles under its monumental weight. Ridley knows how to make “huge” films feel focused, smaller in scale when need be and have scenes drive home a point and continue forward with the story. American Gangster continues that trend.

Uuuuggghhhh, such an awkward hour and something mins, I only said put it on as a joke

The animation looks horrendously dated, the jokes fall flat most the film, it's racially insensitive most the time, and it's just plain lame.

It's pacing is all over the place, it's plot is uninteresting and it's morals are downright awful, Oh don't worry if you lie, put everyone in danger, just so you can get rich, if you come clean in the end, you'll become a manager of a successful business and everyone will sing and dance.

It isn't the worst animated film ever, as sometimes it gets inventive, but it all feels half arsed...

you'll love this - years ago when i worked at wal-mart, i was the third shift electronics supervisor / associate and on about half of our display tv's we HAD to have a movie playing. over and over and over again. and guess which movie that was?

just awful. how Will Smith signed up for this crap still blows my mind i had to listen and (kind of) watch that $h*t for the better part of two months. most nights i would just turn it off or change discs to something else, but most nights the only other option was Cars! :death2: so i would just turn all the tv's off and work in (somewhat) silence

sorry to hear that Diesel i wonder how much they cut out though since it was TV was it put in a typical two hour time slot? because if so, tons was cut since it runs 107 minutes.

i think we all know by now i'm not a big super hero movie guy. i find Batman Begins pretty good at best while many fawn over it (i think mainly because the other Batman's were pretty terrible that it wasn't THAT hard to "get it right" ) and The Dark Knight entertaining but a very flawed film with plenty of mistakes along the way. and those two i like best out of the super hero films!

and we all know how i feel about Iron Man

i have feeling there is a 99% chance this won't be coming to my city (they seem to only bring stuff like the Pirates films and other "big budget" films here ) but if it does i plan on seeing it. probably will have to go alone though. my two best friends will definitely not have the patience for it, even if i tell them exactly what to expect (slow, minimal dialogue, nature shots that linger, et cetera...) and the other good friend, the "film expert" () has no interest in the film since "it has no plot".

The time slot was 2h 15m and they didn't have too many commercial breaks from what I remember. 5 or 6 maybe; I already deleted it so I can't confirm. So I'm thinking all that was cut was the stuff that they obviously had to cut like the nudity,

[Show spoiler]the girl getting killed in the grave (I'm assuming they actually showed it right? In the TV edit they cut away when the guy jumped down with a machete or something and she screamed.) and other quick cuts to the violence like that.

actually that's how the cut is in the film! - the guy

[Show spoiler]jumps down, we see the machete, he swings for her neck, she screams, and we see the big scary guy smile. i think we see her fall? but we don't see any blood or nothing

and at least you enjoyed it somewhat. 3.5/5 isn't terrible

I have a friend in that same dilemma right now, he's seen the entirety of the newest Narnia movie, Gnomeo and Juliet about 20 times and he's almost finished watching the entirety Tangled in bits and piece.

The Dead Pool (No, not the Merc with a Mouth, the Dirty Harry one)

I've seen about 4 Dirty Harry films including this one, Love the original, enjoy Magnum Force, couldn't finish The Enforcer and haven't bothered with Sudden Impact. But I've heard this is pretty decent...well the person who said that to me is now on my top of my Dead Pool list.

It's not "The Enforcer" dull, it's just stupid, stupid as hell. A lot of it is tongue-in-cheek which I can handle, but the film seems to think Harry Callahan is an action god who can just shoot every one in the face and not get hurt himself. Which is not true, he's badass, but only because he puts himself in life threatening situations to stop the bad guy.

It's just not Dirty Harry, I don't want a stupid chase down San Francisco with a frickin RC Car I don't want frickin Jim Carrey in a Dirty Harry film I don't want one liners like "His Hanging back there" and "He went out with a bang".

The ending is just the icing on the shitty sponge cake, it's just too darn silly

And it acts like it's got a message on society, oh media is so bad, focusing on death and stuff. Your opening scene has your main character blowing out the brains of 3 henchmen at point blank, one of which where retreating.

If this was a mindless action film, then I would be cool with it, since it is a very entertaining film, and Clint Eastwood is fantastic in it. But as a Dirty Harry film, it might as well be called Ape Porn 5: The Dead Pool, since it has about as much to do with that than Dirty Harry

Maybe not the most thrilling action movie ever, but I loved the characters, story, and camera work. I definitely prefer this over the Americanized remake "Point of No Return."

another one of those films that has all the individual categories down in some form of greatness - directing, story (for the most part), solid acting, score, cinematography, great atmosphere, wonderful costumes, et cetera... BUT, a film i don't love. i like it. at times i really like it. but it doesn't completely click.

right from the get go, the opening act (which lasts about 30 minutes) and sets up the rest of the film and shows why what happens, happens, just doesn't hook me. it just doesn't click for me. it still seems (after 3 viewings) like something is missing.

the first time i watched this it took way too long to understand what Briony was seeing and why she acted like she did. i didn't get what her reactions meant, (because i'm not a 13 year old girl ) and then we actually see what happens, i just said, "okay..." so on this viewing i knew what to expect and look for, but it still doesn't work as well as it could imo.

first time i watched it, i also thought the ending was hilariously cheap and one of those "bait and switch" type deals that either make films classics or disasters. luckily for Atonement, or maybe not, the ending doesn't throw the film in either territory. i do like how severely depressing the ending is

the biggest flaw of the film is that i just didn't care about any of the characters. and awesome, depressing ending aside (although how it gets there seems cheap in a way...) for as great as individual production pieces were, the film feels cold and disconnected, and at times seems more interested in fantastic set designs and architecture and clothing of the time than the actual people living in this world.

two years ago was the very first time i had seen CEOTTK. while i enjoyed it, i had a lot of issues with it. for me, at that time, it went way to slowly, i didn't understand the ending and all the music and felt the seen was overblown and lasted way too long, and other odds and outs. but i watched all three versions, and i think i liked the theatrical version best.

so, two years later, i own it (again ) and watched it last night and enjoyed the hell out of it

side note: i kind of hate how your feelings on some films change so much over so little time! i don't have time to go back and watch everything over again to see if i like it now or if i still think it's just 'okay' or if it still does suck!

Spielberg has created a wonderful little gem of a film here. seeing this and remembering Super 8 clearly i can see exactly what JJ Abrams and Spielberg (producer) were doing with it and it worked to perfection.

CEOTTK may not be my favorite sci-fi film, but it is a majestic beast that should be viewed at least once by all

my complaints from two years ago are now long gone. the pacing seemed downright perfect, the lack of dialogue was pure genius in my mind, the "musical" number had me awestruck and smiling, and the film just makes you feel giddy and good. you feel a bit like a kid in amazement while watching CEOTTK, which is awesome and something not a lot of films can give you.

may not ever be my favorite film or in my top 50 or anything like that (or maybe one day it will be? ) but it makes me smile, has all the atmosphere and film making wonder you could ask for and puts me on which is all you can ask for from a film.

Rented this one from Netflix-- I'd heard about it and thought it sounded interesting but due to the subject matter-- not a movie that would have much replay value-- and after seeing it I think I had the right idea--
This was a well made movie marred by some irritating directorial styles (making Tony Scott look restrained at times!) and a subject that is difficult to stretch out for a movie running time... I was losing interest a bit towards the end.
James Franco's performance and the cinematography get the highest marks. I was very impressed by Franco in the scenes where he was filming himself talking to friends and family-- very emotional and effective... his "solution" to finally escape was almost unwatcheable as I had heard. Overall well worth watching but not a film with replay value to me--
