I actually already own Sanjuro. Picked it up at Buybacks a few months ago. Been waiting on a deal for Yojimbo to view them together.

With this being my first BnN sale, a few questions for vets:

Do the stores usually carry most if not all the Criterion blus? The only store in my area is like 45 min away and I've never been there.

Do these titles sell pretty fast at the stores? I've read about the shipping nightmares and had planned on getting all my purchases in store.

Is the 50% off of MSRP or BnN price at that time. I'm sure there's probably not much difference but I've noticed on their site most titles are listed at about 5$ off MSRP.

I suppose, in order:

It's hit or miss, but usually, at least at the beginning, each store has at least around 75% of all the released Criterion Blus, if not more. The ones I went to last year varied, and only one of the five I visited had nearly every single one that had been released to that point.

The first few days is usually pretty chaotic if you're not careful. In November I got to my nearest store (also 45 minutes away) that Tuesday night and they still had basically everything there that I wanted, with maybe 2-3 exceptions. I went to that same store 7 days later and they were pretty cleaned out (no thanks to myself), but I only went back to see if they had the new releases there, and they had one of the two that I wanted. So in summation, I would say initially, they go fairly fast, but new releases FLY off the shelves once released.

Finally, it's off MSRP, so all the Blus will be $19.99, unless it's something like Night of the Hunter or By Brakhage, then it'll be more like $24.99 or $29.99 or something.

What? I used coupon codes that were posted in a link a few pages back in this thread, and ordered online, and they worked.

... How much do the supplements that Criterion offer influence which BD you purchase? I was also wondering what type of supplements fans here prefer...

I love the booklets.

But when do you read yours?

It's not during the movie? Afterall, you'll miss the film! And it's not like you can take a lazy afternoon off to read them as you would with a novel or the like since the booklets are only around 20-30 pages.

If you use the website, you can see what titles any store has in stock. You can also use "Pick Me Up" to have a store hold a title for you.

Re-read my post. I'm talking about the 50% off sale.

To me they add value to the set. I love them.

I read them after I watch the movie. They are incredibly insightful IMO.

Thanks for the answers, I plan to be there early that day. I just tried out the site to check in store and every title on my list is in stock as of today. Hopefully it stays that way lol.

Regarding Michael Bay.

He is an auteur and CC is the perfect place for some of his films.

Only MB makes MB films. He does have an individual style.

I noticed a lot of people having that problem...easy solution: have your B&N hold items for you, and for new releases, have them order you a copy to be held behind the counter once it arrives in the store. If the store was getting 0 copies of said title, you will still get one. Its kind of like "ship to store" but you can have the sales people do it for you in store rather than online only like Walmart does.

Why the DVD set of Brazil? Hasn't it been announced that Criterion will do a blu-ray version? Won't the blu-ray have the same extras as the DVD set?

You may be right, but that's probably gonna be in a year, or two... But yeah, I might think about it...

even if Criterion does release Brazil on bd, that's a long way from saying they will release all the cuts included on the 3 disc set.
Personally I will be surprised if the "other" cuts get 1080p releases, but here's hoping.

Totally agree with you on this. Were the other cuts also remastered? On the current Universal BD there's only the theatrical cut so... I'd love a 3 Disc Criterion BD-set with all the different versions...

I want to do this, but will they actually hold it for a week? It says online, and even some places in stores, they will only hold them for a few days.

Criterion typically upconverts all their extras, so we'll at least get the "Love Conquers All" version in 1080i.

Just ordered Solaris, The Great Dictator, and Diabolique in the B2G1 sale. Diabolique wasn't on my list previously, but I watched the "Three Reasons" and now I'm 100% on board.

I got free shipping with my two-month membership (although I guess I would have gotten it anyway, right?) and used a 15% off one item coupon. I assume this is the best I could have done. The 10% off entire order coupon posted a while back seems to have expired.

For the record...

Barnes and Noble will only hold any DVD/BD for 3 days...unless you have an intimate relationship with the cashier(s) in the media section.

Go on Saturday (as I will) and see what they have in stock...order anything else to the store...you'll have it within 3 days.

Easy!

Don't want to start any hatred towards myself but, am I the only one who finds Brazil completely insufferable? The one time I watched it I have to say it took everything I had not to turn it off. Much rather Criterion concentrate on something else that doesn't already have a Blu-Ray release. I'm alone on this yeah?

I am with you but mostly Terry Gilliam and me do not match. This movie, Brazil was the last movie I actually watch from him. I just do not get his style I suppose or rather his style is just not for me.
