i'm not seeing the "cartoon" look u guys are.

the one on the left actually looks like he could be Gloin.....he really looks like John Rhys-Davies.

yeah..the first picture looks like rubbish...I hope it's just a model shot and not a precusor of what the films will look like..

they look like who's from whoville...

ok, all of the "cartoon" comments, are they directed @ this pic?? b/c then i can understand the comments. it was in a spoiler before and i didn't see it.

That's the one, I think some people mistook that photo from LOTR to be from The Hobbit.

It's funny, because I remember people crying foul over the first shots of Chris Hemsworth as Thor as well, saying it looked fake and awful and blah blah blah....That turned out fine. These things usually look better in motion then they do in still pictures. Let's see how it looks on film before we grab the torch and pitch forks...

I think any fakeness or cartoon-ish look is just the lighting and photo shopping.

People in costumes like that are always going to look funny when it's just a photo on a plain background like that.

Could they be CGI mockups? if not, they have been photoshopped to hell thats for sure.

Sorry about that. I guess I should have been more clear with regards to the fact that I was trying to compare The Hobbit dwarves with the LOTR dwarves. I can honestly say its not growing on me, but we'll have to see how this looks at 48fps.

Edit: Maybe these dwarves are unique (and the LOTR ones are not) due to them being warriors? I can't remember if Tolkien ever described the backgrounds of the dwarves. Any help from the scholars?

The one on the right looks like a dwarf version of Dr. Frasier Crane.

the one in the middle looks the worst to me.

the one on the left is an interesting spin and the one on the right is the only one that even remotely looks like the dwarves from LOTR.....and even that isn't very close.

Yeah, but all the belching and farting from Gimili was not.

The cartoonishness of these new dwarfs comes from their looks. Large, funny noses, beady little eyes and wacky haircuts. The old one on the right looks OK. But the younger ones look like they're there to be silly.

beltching i can understand.....farting, not so much....although i don't recall any farting during the 3 movies.
