Very simple to answer.

They will probably start blowing out titles and If I can pick up titles I have wanted for around $10 - $12 brand new then I will instead of buying on SD DVD for $19.99. Why wait until they come out on BR and pay $20 and up for them? Buy cheap while I can.

Its not like my HD DVD will stop working and I can still enjoy HD movies for cheap. I WILL NOT buy SD DVD again. I just cant. The pic sucks. And I wont wait for them on BR since the price will by high for them anyway.

Yeah, I think in the short term HD-DVD sales could get a boost as people scramble to get titles before they disappear, and take advantage of the cutout bin deals that are sure to come.

I continued buying LDs because I had the drive, and the discs were cheaper than DVDs, primarily because of them dwindling down.

Of course, I was completely informed while I was doing this. Hopefully HD-DVDers who continue to buy will be as informed.

Could be. That would be funny. All the e-mails to Warner if HD DVD managed to pull a week out would be something to see.

But, it's not likely to start happening before the momentum of Blu winning kicks in. There are already people heading out for PS/3. And what about all the ultra-deals on eBay that won't count?

I remember when P/DW went HD DVD and there was a surge of sales on Paramount Blu-ray titles. Then, even though it was bad news, Blu supporters were still confident about the format and believed Blu-ray would win eventually (maybe not quite this soon though).

With the Warner decision I just don't see a surge of HD DVD sales happening. First of all Warner are not officially dropping HD DVD for several months so there is no need to rush to buy titles. But, more significantly, I don't think there is any confidence in HD DVD left. Those that know about the Warner decision know it's over. Why buy titles for a format that is already dead? There will be some legacy sales from die hard loyalists, but apart from that I think the game is up.

From now on Blu-ray is the only format to buy. Universal & P/DW will be Blu soon, so there's no need to even pick up titles on red from those studios when, in a few months, you can get the titles on the winning format.

Hopefully we do continue to see the Nielsen numbers published. And if we do I think they will be pretty horrible for HD DVD.

If HD-DUD hasn't won a week yet they won't win one now. The WB snowball has started and will only grow in momentum with each week that passes, making more and more people go Blu. Plus Newline and HBO are nice little bonuses, but we should be getting both Paramount and Universal within the next month or so. I think New Line needs to drop the LOTR's set bomb.

Nielsen scores are gonna start going up up for Blu until there is nothing left of HD but a deflated blow-up doll.

If the trend continues, we won't get any "new" numbers until NEXT Friday.
This Friday, Home Media Magazine will report what we allready know: that the last week of the 2007 year was 61:39.

At some point Home Media Magazine is going to have to either catch up by giving 2 weeks worth of numbers or simply skip a whole week. There is also the rumor that they will no longer report a weekly Top 10 but rather a YTD Top 10 only (I hope this is not true as it is stupid).

Doesn't make sense to me. I'm only 23 and I already plan on having a 2nd bd set for my room, and my sister has one in her room so that'll be 3 sets. Why have a movie that will only play in one player in the house? I don't have a hddvd player, and I'd rather try and sell the stuff on ebay while I could.

I don't see brand new hddvd movies going for 10-12 either. (brand new as in new releases)

The Nielsen numbers is not going to go through a dramatic change unless people who are not in the format war feel secure enough in buying BD. This can happen this week or a few months down the line. The first sign is in hardware. If more people start buying BD players/PS3s, then we're going to see a gradual increase.

A sharp increase that we MAY see in the coming days is from PS3 owners exercising their Trojan Horse option. If they haven't bought BD because of the format war, they may do so now. And this will explain the sharp increase in software but flat response in hardware.

For us, the war is over. The general public may need more convincing. So do your best in explaining the situation for anyone who wants to listen.

January was probably going to be pretty big in Blu-ray's favor even if Warner stayed neutral, just from HD DVD not releasing much. Now we may see some people picking up more HD DVD titles in case they disappear, but I think HD DVD fans will probably start buying less titles, increasing the ratio for Blu-ray even if Blu-ray sales didn't go up. It is almost too bad that there isn't a big neutral title coming out so we could see what the ratio would be for it. I think the vast majority of neutral people would be a lot more likely to buy the Blu-ray version now. The Invasion probably isn't popular enough to judge, and Warner may make HD DVD fans wait for it anyway (making the BD day-and-date, but not the HD DVD).

The Hollywood Reporter informs that Resident Evil:
Extinction And War were #1 and #2 respectevely in DVD sales for the week ended Jan 6. There is not mention of the high Def versions. Expect HUGE numbers for the Blu side. DV is supposed to "predict" the numbers this week. Hope that someone is kind enough to post those numbers here.

This makes sense.

I believe, that we in some weeks will see the first 80 %. Many red ants have turned purple the last week.

Given the strength of this week's lineup, I wouldn't be shocked if this was the first 80

3:10- my BB got about 70-80 copies, 10 left Wed night
Sunshine- 15 copies, gone (their buyer must be an idiot, the title screamed "Hello! Look amazing in HD! Future perennial bestseller cult title!)
The Rock, 10 copies, 1 left after I got mine

Not to mention the huge holes from the $14.99 sale, but still no Superman Returns PCM (boo) to get for $24.99

So for me, in the official time period that makes 6 Blus this week from Nielsen sources, 4 Warner/NL as a thankyou

If you want some early indications that indeed a lot of former HD dVD owners are buying into blu-ray, amazon video game sales rankings for video games provides some evidence. The 40GB PS3 Spiderman Movie Pak has always ranked behind the 80 GB PS3 in Amazon sales rankings (gamers would prefer the 80 GB Motorstorm pack). However, for the last week the 40 GB has been ranked ahead of the 80GB console. In fact, right now the 40GB PS3 is ranked #18 and the 80GB ps3 is #19. Those rankings are higher than I have notice, including the entire month of December. In addittion, the PS3 Blu-ray remote is #9, which is also much higher than I have ever noticed.

I stopped buying LD's shortly before Panasonic said they weren't going to advance the technology. The writing was clearly on the wall and I just couldn't sink money into the discs anymore. Ken Cranes online lost a LOT of LD business from me after the switch.

I'm not sure if you mean the movies (disc) or your player. The negative side to this is you need two players in each room that you want to watch both formats in. Also, you player could fail any day, as well as a Blu-ray player could, but for the Blu you will have long term support for a fix or to buy a new one. Even Microsoft made a statement yesterday that they "were never exclusive to HD-DVD and may now put a Blu-ray option with the XBOX". Typical Microscum, they will turn their back on the HD-DVD add-on in a heartbeat.

What you need to do if you want to assure being able to play your collection of HD-DVD's long term, is to buy a backup player or two to be able to play your smaller collection(because your Blu will continue to grow) of HD-DVD's down the road. Is it worth that investment!

Dunno, but the confusion about what week's numbers we'll be seeing when is making my head hurt! Would be swell if Grubert could use his contact at HMM to find out when they'll be back on the normal cycle.
