I wish I could hear difference between HD and compressed audio first, before I make a decision that will likely end in regret. My speakers aren't fancy, HD audio might not sound any better on my set-up.
Id keep the PS3.

But thats just me. You get way more bang for the buck...its a freakin super computer!

(Upgrade the receiver down the road...)

so I understand what you are saying and then I am lost at the same time

My understanding is this:

I have a PS3 with an HDMI cable going straight to my TV (my current receiver does not have an HDMI input) I'm running an optical cable from my TV to my receiver. I'm assuming now that I am not getting the lossless audio tracks and just getting the normal 5.1 sound?

Yes, you will still hear standard 5.1 dolby digital and dts...but Uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD Master will only output as 2.0 through an optical cable.

Thumbs up Learn something new every day!

and here I thought optical was the best I could do on my receiver that doesn't have HDMI. I'll be sure to set this up tonight when I get home.

Thanks!!!

Receiver = Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX
Blu-ray = Panasonic DMP-BD30 (firmware 1.3)

The hook up was easy! Setting the reciever to the correct input required me to find the instruction manual - which was the hardest part of the job! All in all, about 45 minutes later the sound is much better. I am thrilled!

Are there any settings on the DMP-BD30 that I should adjust?

well, heres the thing...

Your Receiver cannot decode Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD Master. And unfortunately the BD-30 can only send those formats as a Bitstream, so in other words you wont be able to utilize them. But you should have no problems with Uncompressed PCM tracks.

Shortly speaking: invest in NEWEST player. This will save life to your current receiver.

So, I'll set the Panny to send only PCM, right?
The improvement over optical is quite surprising, and I'm very thankful for your help.

Speaking of '300', I recently got this Blu ray and tried setting up the player (Sharp BD-HP20U) and Receiver (Yamaha 5850 with no HDMI), and could only get sound from one front speaker (left) and the back speakers. I could not get sound from the centre nor the front right. I will check the connections tonight and even try another set of cables.
On a positive note, the back speakers 'came alive' with the sound. I could not believe it. But with the Centre not working, the dialog is very low. I am only using the standard RCA cables that came with the player and a couple more I have found in storage.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you all for your patience.

if those speakers are not producing sound perhaps you have the wires connected wrong? (did they work fine before?) also, in the bluray player set-up, did you turn on the center channel speaker?

Hi, again:

Yes, all the speakers are fine. I can hear all speakers (including the Center) when using an Optical cable from the player to the receiver.

I don't quite understand.

doesnt look to shabby!

nice TV, great bluray player...I couldnt find much info on the RHT-800...but as long as it has an optical connection at the bare minimum then youre good to go.

Do you already have this set-up or are you planning on it?

For those of you who have a standalone bluray player (not the PS3, as it does not have multichannel analog output)...there is hope for you yet.

I am posting this for those who are not very tech savy. For those who may be using an optical cable still, and have no idea that lossless audio can be achieved even with older model receivers. To cut to the chase...

if your receiver has mutlichannel analog inputs...then you can hear lossless audio. You will need to buy 3 sets of these analog cables. Just connect to your bluray player, and you will have lossless audio in no time.

This thread is intended for those who do not have an HDMI receiver but do have a Bluray player with Multichannel Analog outputs and an old school receiver with analog in's.

I know this is fairly common knowledge but there are still those out there who have no idea. And Im all about bringing everyone the best blu experience possible. This can work for audio in conjunction with component cables to the receiver, or even HDMI directly to the TV for video and the analog cables to the receiver for audio. So stop using optical, and get with the HD audio.

EDIT: If your current (Multichannel Analog) receiver cannot decode newer codecs, then you would need a Bluray player with Internal decoding (into Linear PCM) such as the Panasonic 10ak. If your receiver does have Dts-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD decoding, then you may want a Bluray player that can Bitstream the audio, such as the new Panasonic 30.

(ps. Upgrade to an HDMI receiver! )
Another way of doing this, for all of the HTPC fans out there, is uising PowerDVD Ultra as your sound decoder(it decodes all of the new formats) and your HTPC as a prepro. This is expensive because you must have amplification for each channel (seperate power amps for each speaker or powered speakers) and come out of your sound card (make sure you have a good one). I have had some success in using my HTPC as a pre/pro. If you are using an HTPC with Blu-ray and a Extreme HD compatible monitor - you can have results that are better than those of 1080p pictures - you may say it doesn't get any better - but in PC/MAC world we believe in pushing the envelope. Upconversion, higher refresh rates ect. are all possible.

Question Panasonic Blu-ray & Denon Receiver

Hi there,
First post here, but I've been avidly enjoying this Forum for quite sometime. This is an intriguing topic as I have a DENON 3805 Receiver that I'm very happy with and I have no immediate plans to upgrade. It obviously doesn't have HDMI switching though
My Panasonic BD10A Blu Ray has the Multi-channel Analog outs and I would love to hear the Uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD Master of some of my fine Blu ray movies.

I have hooked up the six RCAs as instructed from the Panny to the Denons EXT. IN section and set the Panny's audio out to <Bitstream>.

The problem I'm having is getting my Denon to give me any sound. I have it set to EXT. IN on the frontpanel and in its System set-up I've set the Digital and Component Inputs to <none>. The front display of the receiver says "DVD EXT. IN", I have no idea what is defeating the sound from broadcasting. Any insight would be appreciated as I'd really like to try this out.

Thanks for taking time to read my first post here and on a seperate note

BLU is BEST

Grimmly

p.s. From the Blu Ray I was using Co-AX going to the receiver for audio, and have HDMI going to my Panny 50" Plasma for video (and tv audio)
