Thanks again, this is helpful towards deciding between a PS3 and a standalone player. I think my next biggest thing to get past is the fact that I've grown very used to my Harmony remote being able to do EVERYTHING in the whole theater setup & controlling the PS3 with it looks kludgy at best. Anything else I'm missing? |

I recently got PS3 and i love it.I have a question about PS3 audio.
I have set audio out set to manually for the following 1.Dolby 2.DTS 3. 2.1 CH PCM(PS3 default selection.), When i play movies audio is fine, but when i play game the audio is not coming until i set to automatic or i select all 5.1 ch PCM options, but when i select all 5.1 ch PCM options the movie audio is not coming correctly.. Would you help me set the correct audio output for playing movies and games. Thanks. |

Hi i just signed up to the forum and they wont let me start a new thread yet, so i figured i'd start out here trying to figure out a little bit of my problem
I bought a PS3 a few days ago, i brought it home, played my new BR Disc "sunshine" watched the movie without interruption and right after tried to watch some special features. The machine went nutty, first it froze for 2 minutes when i tried to pause it. I eject the disc and start it over. i got back to the special feature i wanted to watch... tried to skip a chapter and the thing froze again. I repeat this numerous times hitting play, pause, chapter skip ( pretty much every button) until i decided to wait out the frozen screen. after about 5 minutes all of my prior button commands activate all at once. Seconds after the machine froze again. I brought this machine back to gamestop (which is an organization creeping up my shit list) and they told me i could not return the machine even though i swore it was defective. The best they could do was give me an exchange for a new machine. I brought that machine home and had the same exact problems. Since i have tried that dvd on a friends 80g PS3 and i had no problems whatsoever. It ran beautifully. I remembered what a friend had told me a while back about blu-ray technology. He said that blu-ray players don't actually play off the disc. in most cases the disc stops spinning entirely but not before the information on the disc is temporarily transfered to the hard drive of the machine. This got me thinking that a 40g PS3 might have some serious problems playing a 50g blu-ray disc. This can be my only explanation to this problem being i tried this dvd on an 80g machine and it worked fine... and i had the same exact problem on two different 40g machine. Has anyone else had or heard of this problem? is there any chance of help or information about this problem? these machines must be having problems or gamestop sold me two broken machines in the exact same way. I appreciate any help you all can provide. Thank you. |

Did you update your PS3 to the latest firmware before playing the disc? Mine has no problems whatsoever with 50 GB discs.

BR seems very hit and miss. Do you really just spend $400 and then cross your fingers that it will actually play movies?
Are these just glitches because BR is still new? Asking because I was excited about the news that one of the formats had finally won the war, and I've been wanting to get a High-Def player for a while. |

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/SystemUpdate Scroll down to the end of the page. There is a link for updating the PS3 using a PC (actually a usb flash drive). You will download the update file to a PC then copy it to a usb flash drive in specific folders which you'll probably need to create. Plug it into your PS3 then run System Update and chose from a usb flash drive. |

just bought a 40GB ps3 and there is some pretty bad red video artifacting on the menu screens and web browser screen. same artifacts (bleeding red colors) when I playback movie trailers from the hard drive. seems especially bad on gray colors. when I playback movies from disc (either sd or blu-ray) they look fine.
Anybody know if I there's an easy fix for this? (1080p sceptre naga 37 monitor & hdmi 1.0 cable) |

Might be a bad HDMI cable.

If it was a bad cable I would expect the DVD & blu-ray playback to have the same problem. also, it's the same cable I've been using for years on my upconverting sd player

I have no interest in games, but it seems from what I'm reading that PS3 is simply the best Blu-Ray player around and not just because of the price....would you all agree?
Lets say all Blu-Ray Players and PS3s were the exact same price. If that was the case, which one would you advise me to choose? ... If the answer is "PS3," then my next question is: If I'm just using it as a BR player, does it matter if I get 40GB or 80GB? Last edited by Cinemaddict; 01-14-2008 at 12:57 AM. |

Go to Sony's PS3 site and to the upgrade section. Follow the instructions for updating via a flash drive. Follow to the letter. I mean this: follow to the letter. No downloading to the desk top and then copying to the flash drive. It will not work. I know as I tried but when I did follow the instructions exactly it all worked as promised. I want from 1.9 something to 2.1 perfectly fine once I did as told.
