Pulp Fiction, Jaws, Godfather, The Dark Knight. Those are just a few of my favorite opening scenes.

I almost forgot to mention. Ringmaster has one of the most hilarious opening scenes.

Saving Private Ryan, Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, and The Dark Knight. My favorite would have to be Goodfellas.

Goodfellas, that's another great one I forgot to mention. Perfect opening.

Strange Brew with Bob and Doug Mckenzie(Rick Moranis,Dave Thomas),they show the MGM lion and he is not roaring ,then it shows them trying to crank his tail to get him to roar.

Mr. Brooks opening was pretty cool
Dark City grabbed me right off the back

Plenty of other great classics mentioned.

depends on what you are looking for - genre, pure visual impact, etc. I loved the opening for Star Trek:First Contact. we always knew the borg ships were huge but that pullback from Picard's eye was unreal - it showed just how large the ships really were and how small someone really was compared to the collective. really showed that they were now making movies and not tv episodes anymore.

if you want something more mainstream, i love the intros to the Leone/Eastwood westerns. the moment you watch them, you knew it was something special.

Has anyone mentioned 'Troy'? The first scene where Achilles kills the best fighter (he's a giant) from the other army is worth the price of admission alone.

I liked the opening scene to the 2010 film "the town". That first bank robbery scene is pretty awesome.

For slow and quiet and just.... awe-inspiring, 2001.
For fast and loud and just.. jaw-dropping, Saving Private Ryan.
