Some of the new color timing choices bother me (such as the pink tennis ball).

For the next release/Kubrick box set, I hope they include the international cut as well, as I've never seen it. The current BD looks fine, but a new scan or a higher bitrate encode would be cool. Also, I hope they fix those minor color issues.

that's not true. I got the Kubrick BluRay box, and that has the European cut. (113 mins)
it really should've included both cuts.

Just had the pleasure of watching the Shining at the legendary Grauman's Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.

While the print that was used for the screening wasn't pristine, I have to say that it looked great overall and really highlighted how solid the blu ray presentation is compared to the source material.

Very cool. The blu definitely looks great. If you don't mind sharing, how much were the tickets?

The Shining was $8 with a student ID.

I am currently two days into my annual trip to visit my friend here in Los Angeles. Even though I was extremely tired from traveling all day, I made it a priority to get to the theater on Thursday and I am so glad that I did! What an experience...the picture was great but nothing could have prepared me for the sound! WOW! The music was so loud that I couldn't help but be startled by scenes I have literally scene a hundred times. Kubrick knew how to use sound to great effect on the audience in order to enhance the overall experience of the film. I was reminded of the time my dad took me to a film festival in Northampton, MA when I was in middle school and we saw a screening of 2001...I think more than two hours of booming classical music and space suit breathing might be where my hearing loss started (well, that and all the concerts I attended in high school when I didn't think earplugs looked cool).

I am going to a bunch of other film showings while I am out here, including a double feature of The Fly and The Thing (remakes) next Friday at the Egyptian! Possibly one of the best double features I can imagine. Needless to say, I can't wait!

If anyone reading this ever takes a trip to Los Angeles and you appreciate film (which I assume you do if you are on this site), I beg you to do your research about film showings while you will be in town and make time for them in your schedule. You will not be disappointed, especially since there are often guests from the films in attendance!

I strongly suggest...

- Aero Theater (sister to the Egyptian in Santa Monica, featured in Donnie Darko)
- Egyptian Theater (a true landmark)
- Hollywood Forever Cemetery (classic films projected on a mausoleum wall...seriously. It is awesome. Seeing Annie Hall tonight)
- New Beverly Cinema (quietly owned by Tarantino...diverse and awesome programming!)

of course there are many other theaters that deal with revival showings, but the above are the ones I have been going to for the last few years whenever I visit.

I saw this in a theater a couple years ago, they were doing a midnight showing on Halloween. It was an amazing experience to watch it with a crowd!

This is one of the greatest horror films of all time, I'm always discovering new things about it. Check out this article discussing the possibility of subliminal inconsistencies in the architecture of the Overlook Hotel. Blew my mind!

Picked up my copy just today. Absolutely love Jacks performance throughout.

Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!

Took some shots too. A little shameless self-promotion if anybody wants to have a peek...

I just received my copy I ordered a few days ago. Haven't watch it yet so no spoilers please, although I guess the Simpsons took something aways

Anyway, on the back it says "16x9 1.85" which is kinda confusing to me because 16/9 would be 1.78 and not 1.85.

The running time is 119 Minutes (European Version).

Now I'm gonna watch the movie anyway of course but I would still like to know a few things:

1) What is the original aspect ratio? Does the US version (amazon) come in the original aspect ratio? Are there parts of the image cut from any version?

2) The US version is the longer cut (144 Minutes), but it does not include German audio. Is there any version available that I can play on my region B BD player, is 144 minutes long and contains German and English audio?

The movie was framed for 1.85:1. Both blu-ray releases slightly open up the image to 1.778:1, as is typical for Warner. You'll be seeing a little more on the disc than you would have in theaters exhibiting the film in 1.85:1, but slightly less than theaters which showed the film in 1.66:1.

OK but concerning the aspect ratio and the part of the image I see, the European and the US version are equal?

Yes. Only the cut is different.

This is a classic horror film that is bloody good fun.
Debatable. I preferred Salem's Lot, It and The Stand.

I found the movie creepy, not scary. Poor Olive Oyl.

Which means, some will like it, some won't.

I haven't seen the movie for a long time. So, I don't know what type of effect it would have on me today. But as a kid, it scared the crap out of me. The twin girls were creepy, and so was the blood pouring out of the elevator. The scary moments for me were; the lady in the bathtub, that Jack pays a visit to, and when Jack axes Scatman Crothers. The labyrinth scene at the end, also had me frightened. This was one of those movies, as a kid, I could not watch alone, and would keep me up at night.
