I hope that Sony does not do this. If they do it would make them no better than To$hiba or M$. The format will die a slow death on it's own anyway.

I agree. Did Toshiba pay Sony when Toshiba won the format war for the standard DVD? No. What is it with this country, that when people make rotten foolish decisions, that they think someone else should bail them out? That is the risk both sides took in this war. Sony needs to spend money promoting Blu-ray to those who haven't bought it yet. They also have a battle on their hands fighting Microsoft's startegy of pushing downloads. They have already spent money competing with Toshiba. They deserve to reap the rewards. Let Microsoft bail Toshiba out.

PERIOD.

Why would Sony pay Toshiba when Sony controls almost 85%-90% of HD market in the world. By Feb or March we should see the format war over by then. I don't see this stretching farther then June.

Thumbs down No money for Toshiba!

Toshiba's venture into HD DVD was ill-advised and they pursued it at Microsoft's bidding. They should bear the consequences of their actions.

This unnecessary HD format war has already cost the BDA companies (and unwitting HD DVD buyers) millions.

I hope that Toshiba has permanently tarnished whatever image they may have with consumers. Their executives will at some point answer to their company's stockholders. That will be their day of reckoning.

The retailers are not going to keep stocking Toshiba's shit if it's only out there to secure a payoff so they'll stop supporting it.

Sony and the BDA should forget the olive branch. They should pay absolutely nothing to Toshiba, Universal and Paramount to relent. There is no reason to surrender when the BDA should be enjoying the spoils of victory. Bury them with marketing and play hardball when they come knocking on the BDA's door.

That site just killed my eyes, seriously the entire screen is wavy lines after looking at that cacophony of black white and blue then coming back to a normal page.

It realy is a sad state of affairs right now. Toshiba is just scratching and clawing like a cornered rat. Seeing them all hold off for the payout will just be one more peice in the puzzle of the sick degeneration that is modern day capitalism.

T is laying face down in the mud. Why would you pay some guy who's ass you just kicked to give up.

That ain't the way John Wayne would have done it.

I have been saying since these posts started on this topic. No way should Sony or the BDA "pay off" Tosh and the Red team!!

Sony has this almost in the bag, only a matter of time before the other two studios go blu. The BDA cannot pay either of these studio's off either as they have had the stance they will not do this and why do this at the tail end of the war. Patience, only 6 more months when Warner is exclusive and the rest will fall into place.

F*** 'em. I say let them sleep in their own filth.

Bought a Toshiba monitor, crapped out on me in less than two years.
Bought a Toshiba TV for my mom a year ago, having probs already.
Bought an HD DVD player, glitchy/skippy/stuttering playback of HD DVDs and DVDs.

Toshiba can lick my choad. I hope they have less presence in the CE market in the future after this huge investment in a format failure.

Toshiba has many faces these days.

Pushing for their ever precious market penetration, they are like the hd media rapist. Hosing over the customers and now everyone in their aparent strategy to either take down all hd media kicking and screaming with them. Or to extort a little payback in their other role...

As the desparate ransom demanding crackhead hoping to glean as much as possible from ALL sides on their way out. The customers they are still trying to snow into buying there players now marketed as upconverting dvd players. As well as take a bite out of the other studios to recoup some of their losses?

A bit dramatic of a characterization maybe, but I have no respect left for toshiba paramount or universal.

This is not a war "to the death" . Others have noted that this should have been negotiated before it became the mess it is. And the rumors around of another party goading Toshiba to proceed and launch is certainly one that makes people go "wot?".

The feeling I have is that Toshiba will get less on this deal than the one it would have got if it didn't launch the format war in the first place since everyone knows that the architects of that war on Toshiba's side are not particularly having a great time with all of 2007 up till Q5.

On one hand, if they pay off Toshiba it will end the war quickly.

On the other hand, how many less people would go Blu-ray because Sony had to "Buy off" HD-DVD in order to win.

I say, screw Toshiba, let them rot in the filth they've created.

*LOL* I agree, I say f*** 'em as well and all the other HD-DVD supporters (Universal / Paramount). Let them come to Blu-ray, not the other way around.

Speaking of HD-DVD players, their HD-DVD add-on is crap. The last couple of movies I rented has been unreadable, so I had to switch the other side which was DVD and it was struggling at times reading it... I imagine if it were blu-ray with the scratch-resistant technology, this wouldn't be a problem.
