Probably posted here somewhere, but this is pretty funny about the fall of HD DVD (found it on Gizmodo):

Well a few things to clarify...
1) HD-DVD does not need "new" players at the moment unlike Blu-ray. So why make any more now? Yes they could come out with a high end player that did more audio decoding but what would they add to the lower end? 1080p? Already have it for under $200. Internet? Already have it. PiP? Already have it. So to me no new players means nothing. 2) Software. They will not have "much" less software till after May, so they have a few months to continue to build. I believe Warner is holding HD-DVD back, which is a good thing and New Line is done with them. But if neither of them put out decent titles on either side, any time soon, the swap will not matter till then. I don't know how many studios could "sway" back to HD-DVD before years end even if the sales picked up. I am sure Warner has quite the contract as does Fox. Disney and Sony won't leave. That leaves VERY slim pickings overall. So I don't see HD-DVD being able to pull anyone over to their side. To be honest...Sony and the BDA need to get their heads out of the sand and end this thing once and for all. 1) Drop profile 1 players to under $200 and do it NOW. 2) Drop profile 1.1 players to under $300 3) Profile 2.0 players need to start at $400 and not go above $500 unless they have HIGH end. Also GET the players on the market NOW. There seems to be quite a few hold-outs waiting for these players. 4) Software has always been in blu's court and they need to flaunt that. Better prices, better kid selection, better adult selection. HD-DVD has Transformers, Batman and Matrix as bit titles...(I am sure there are more but not looking them up). Warner needs to get Batman and the Matrix out on blu, and New Line announce LOTR as blu only. And that will be end-game. |

Non-existent? Yet another who thinks the war is over thus we can just sit back and cheer, eat out bon-bons, shake out pom-poms and HD-DVD will just fade into the darkness. I cant' believe anyone would be this nieve. No insult intended based upon intelligence but dumb thinking. And if the BDA think like that...I better get ready to go red. I HOPE that it is over...BUT every day this continues, another potential customer is lost. Everyday prices are $300+ for a player, someone buys another SD upconverting player. BDA is no where CLOSE to winning anything. Consumers still can buy two formats, will still hear two formats are battling from all the stores, thus not buy either. BDA has cratered more profits then HD-DVD has... BDA has cratered profits spending over $500 million to get Warner and keep Fox, or was that free? BDA has cratered profits to sell the PS3 for a reasonable cost, in my eyes the only reason Blu is still here and the rolls are not reversed. So don't even discuss profit as there has been none I am sure. HD-DVD needs to die now...not in 6 months not in a year...now. Selling a basically equal product one nearly 3 times the cost of the other? Sorry but consumers are not rich like it seems we early adopters are. And ONCE HD-DVD is done...guess what? Have to deal with SD which that is not even a fight...IT is like the 300 Spartans going up against todays US army. NOW don't get me wrong...HD-DVD will lose, but time is not on HDM's sides. People need to walk into the store and see SD and Blu...and that is it. Once that happens...and only then can we declare victory over HD-DVD. Last edited by Bolaar; 01-15-2008 at 12:35 PM. |

Fire Sale hardware buyers are not HD Movie buyers. Only a small percentage of those who buy into this close out pricing will actually support the format with increased purchase of more expensive movies. They'll continue to bargain hunt and buy the DVD copy at the lower price. The largest percentage of people they'll bring in with this tactic will be those who really can't afford to be in the game or are penny wise and refulse to be in the game.

WE are the informed public. How many are not informed? 95+%? 99+% You think BB or CC or amazon want to be stuck with 10,000's of players that they can't get rid of? At this moment in time they can state factually... HD-DVD is the cheapest. HD-DVD has nearly as many movies as Blu. HD-DVD has Paramount, Universal and Warner making movies for them. HD-DVD players have more "special" features. These are just selling points I know but they are still there. |

I am one of the people this thread is about.
I went 100% Blu yesterday with my purchase of a Sony PS3 40 gig system. Traded in all my HD-DVD movies, my Xbox 360 premium system, HD-DVD add on and all my 360 games. While I ultimately made the "choice" to "back" HD-DVD, I felt in the end I was suckered with Toshiba not giving 100% to support the format. What they are doing now with this all new "advertising/media blitz/price reduction" campaign is sickening. It's a money grab/fire sale imo. There's absolutely nothing HD-DVD can do at this point to ever think about winning this "war". It's game, set, match. Then we have Microsoft whom is more interested in "downloadable content" and fielding calls about red ringed 360s. It made me realize I was wrong in throwing my support and hard earned money behind these two companies. It feels good to be Blu. ![]() -Rob |

Welcome aboard Rob...
I agree with your statements 100%. I think Toshiba just figured they would win based upon their merits...and advertising did not matter. Word of mouth would bring the numbers. Well that is not usually the case in business. |
