Arlington Road - 3.5/5

I watched this a while ago so I don't remember it too much but it was a pretty well done thriller, kinda crazy though. Bridges and Robbins worked really well together

The Hurt Locker - 3/5

Watched this in my film class and I still have the same criticisms - terribly unrealistic, goofy script, at times it's cheezy as hell (the ridiculous "spit and rub" and capri sun scenes). It's well made, but for me it just sucks. Bigelow pushes a lot of overly dramatic scenes in and none of them really work. Way too many "WTF, who wrote this" moments for me, but it makes for a fun film to watch With the script that they were given, acting is pretty good

Kickass - 4.75/5

Man, this is a wild and wacky film but holy F was it was really fun and badass! I love Nic Cage in roles like these!

Easy A - 4/5

Very well done and I enjoyed it but it's kinda hard to watch goofy high school films like this.

Beauty and the Beast - 4/5

It was fun revisiting this one, hadn't seen it since I was a kid. Looks FANTASTIC on blu!

Away We Go - 4/5

Cute film, I like Mendes' direction a lot better than the story. Acting was solid, I liked the connection that the 2 leads had. I thought it was interesting how Maggie Gyllenhaal's character was a more enlightened person, and more mature than the two main characters, yet she was painted in a bad light.

Next greatest rental: “Super.”

As expected, this movie runs along similar lines to “Kick-Ass,” in the sense that both films feature lowlife protagonists who decide one day to just don a costume and become a masked vigilante. Both movies generally showcase such vigilantes in a brutal and realistic light (because, lets’ face it, doing this type of thing will be dangerous in every sense of the word). Both push the boundaries of the R-rating, and will either shock, offend, or crack up the audience.

That’s where most of the similarities end; “Super” is a stranger, bleaker, and more awkward experience. The humor is dryer, with a heavier focus on deadpan comedy, but it is quite witty and funny most of the time. There is some decent dialogue throughout (regardless of the profuse profanity). There are some explosive (and extraordinarily brutal) action scenes. The film is actually somewhat bipolar because of this; it made me laugh half of the time and disconcerted me the other half. I felt it was a solid experience overall, but a few scenes really pushed it for me; I found it hard to root for the good guys when they’re bordering on being overly-brutal (toward potentially-innocent civilians nonetheless) and psychotic. It’s funny, in a dark and twisted way, but perhaps a little too bleak for me, and it’ll certainly push the limits for certain audiences.

The story for this is interesting, at the least. It is a fairly sobering view on vigilantism, providing a stark (and perhaps necessary) contrast to all the Marvel and DC superheroes that dominate the market. It has its roots deep in the characters, which are decently-developed and relate-able (I was actually getting pretty ticked watching
[Show spoiler]the guy’s dippy wife being seduced, kidnapped, and ultimately stolen by Kevin Bacon and his gang
). The film does tread on some iffy ground though; it shows the character experiencing religious visions, but inconclusively hints that they may have been illusions. The story tries to be morally ambiguous as the heroes’ actions tend to get meaner and more violent. But in the end, it’s never fully clear as to what the message of the film should be. Is being a hero a good thing or a bad thing? Should one take a stand or not? Should one live a happy life or not? The film manages to dig up these questions, but the answers are either nonexistent, ambiguous, or too bleak to consider.

It is interesting cinematically, with solid camerawork that gives the film a realistic look and feel. Editing is pretty slick, especially with the occasional comic-book motif. Acting and writing are pretty strong. The production value is probably not that high, but still features adequate sets, props, and costumes. Music is not bad.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 3.5/5, film: 4/5)

I’m still going back and forth as to whether or not I’d want to buy this; I was finding it a little too brutal at times. But chances are that I’ll jump on it when it’s $15 or less.

Recommendation: As a rental, if you aren’t offended by gnarly brutal violence, lots of cursing, and hentai references.

“Shut up crime!”

Next greatest blind-buy: “Drive Angry.”

Nicholas Cage plays a man from Hell who drives around in cool-looking cars with some hot chick blasting bad guys with a cool-looking gun! Sounds like fun, right? “Drive Angry” has its share of cheesy over-the-top action, and it goes into one or two interesting tidbits of gothic lore. But right from the start, the movie proved to be trashy and sleazy with a steady stream of profanities coming out of the speakers, and some occasional flashes of bloody mayhem and gratuitous sex. These elements should add to the entertainment value (as it did with other gothic-themed shows like “Blade,” “Hellsing,” “The Crow,” etc). But in this case, I felt too much like a Rob Zombie movie (straight-up trailer trash), only far too contrived. It felt like the movie tried too hard to be edgy and sleazy (going so far as to even include sleazy music by Peaches), when it would have worked better without. After all, “Ghost Rider” is good clean fun; “Drive Angry” isn’t.

I think the biggest failure is in the story. It doesn’t seem to congeal properly, as it meanders down the road with no proper goal or conflict set until the last act. The last act is probably the strongest, as the characters wage their final battle and save the day (with the R-rated fluff being less gratuitous nonetheless), but for most of the film, I was still a little lost about the point and the mythology behind the story. On the plus side, the characters show adequate strength, and help keep the film from being totally shallow.

It’s pretty iffy as a film too. Photography is generally not bad, but some shots are gimmicky (catering solely for a 3D presentation), and others are edited in a cheap or sloppy fashion. Acting is generally not bad; I enjoyed Nicholas Cage and William Fichtner in their roles, and everybody else seemed fitting. Writing can be a hit or a miss. Production value features some fine and dandy sets, props, costumes, and cars. Most special effects are kinda cool, but are only average at best (some are actually awful). Music is pretty cool at times.

3/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 2.5/5, film: 3/5)

Recommendation: Probably not. I recommend “Ghost Rider” and “Constantine” instead.

Having watched both of these movies back-to-back, this whole evening feels f***ed up.

I agree with both reviews, Drive Angry was abit lame for a Grindhouse-esque film Super I blind bought, it's a cool film, and everything going for it is great, but there's just a heavy lack of closure and concluding point to it

I love both Kick-Ass and Easy A. I don't find it hard to watch a movie like Easy A though when they are done as well as it was. Emma Stone makes it even easier.

Watched Kick-Ass today Brilliant film and hadn't seen it since the cinema. Still loved it as much as I did then & smiled/laughed as much. Bookmarked SO many parts of the blu-ray . I'd give it a 5/5.

Easy A is also great, really was impressed and my love for Emma Stone was only increased, lol. 4.5/5.

Cinema today, watched Apollo 18, :/.
1.5/5 on par with Your Highness as the worst film I've seen this year (even out of ALL the films I've seen this year and not just that were released this year!!).

I like it as well...of course, I can't see the rest of it...but it's hard to imagine she made it look ugly

I cancelled my pre-order for the Star Wars prequels. The more and more I thought about it recently, I couldn't waste a $40 gift card on one movie I really like, one that is okay at best and one that is barely passable.

Going to hold on to my DVD of Revenge of the Sith (which I gave to my sister-in-law...and then had to ask for it back just now ) and hope for an eventual individual release.

I agree, I can always appreciate a film when it's well made but I also have to give a damn about the subject matter. I was definitely interested in Emma more than anything else

Kick-Ass was just rad as f*ck, even though it was pretty wacky

That looked pretty bad, thanks for the confirmation lol. I know it's not gonna be good but I'm still kinda interested in seeing Your Highness... I can't not see a Natalie Portman film

Actually, looking over the info at rottentomatoes and imdb, maybe hate is too strong of a word. But it does seem like most people's least favorite of the series (wither this one or "Order of the Phoenix"); I personally found the plot a little convoluted, but then, I read the book and it flowed a little better. I still liked it.

Right on. I don't even consider "Drive Angry" Grindhouse-ish at all, no matter how hard it tried.

It's awe-inspiringly shot, with a great script to boot. There is something very lighthearted to the film although it loves to portray itself as very gloomy, with very few moments of actual happiness, it's the sort of film you can have on in the background and glance over to see a simple indie film, but if you take a deeper look it's quite brutally realistic.

I disagree with the fact that the acts fail to follow up of the first in terms of quality, I think they are all really good, with the happy moments all in the first act, and then the stuff starting to go down hill in the second act. I don't think the other two acts are quite as fast paced as the first, although that just shows that the good times fly meanwhile the bad times linger.

The characters are very subtle in their portrayal, as throughout the film, they slowly pick away at themselves showing more and more through contact with others. It's wonderfully presented, and characters feel like they have a realistic development and change. The only character who doesn't seem to change for the most part is the main character, who throughout the film is basically picking and choosing what to do next to get what he wants, and this follows through right until the end, where I thought he would learn his lesson, but the epilogue kicks in, and as much as that wrap up felt unnecessary and ruins that end thought, it still so nicely portrayed and presented by Richard Ayoade that I can't ***** about it

I loved Submarine, I think many people on here will love it, probably more Bearcat and Squid than Diesel and Killowertz, but I recommend to anyone and everyone because it is just that damn good!

10/10
Glad you liked it. I gave it a 4/5 on my first viewing. I may have to see this again.

I just felt that the middle acts dragged a bit. A little editing and tweaks could have made this a perfect rom-com, imo. I actually liked the epilogue (as much as the prologue and the first act); I thought it was a nice ending, and I found it rather poetic.

I also thought Paddy Considine was hilarious in his small role, and Craig Roberts did a great job as the lead for a newcomer. He'd fit in just fine in a Wes Anderson movie.

I'm surprised you just saw this now. Didn't this come out early in the year back there?

I know, could of been a thousand times cheesier and more entertaining.

It did, but it was limited release, and there are no art house cinemas near me.

Yes, he disagreed with us on that. But thats what I am here for...to correct people when their opinion is wrong.

Anyone else like to do that every now and then... go back and read through old reviews and good discussions we've had on here... I think it's fun
Yes. It can be fun to revisit some of the old super passionate debates.
