They used to bother me, but like you said, it's very easy to get the residue off, so now I don't care. What methods are you using? I can personally vouch that a q-tip and a dab of rubbing alcohol works every time. It never ruins the cardboard or the packaging.

I like to tear them off and leaving the papery backing just to wage my quiet war against packaging OCD

You can NOT use any kind of liquid substance on your Dances With Wolves slipcover. It will ruin the velvety texture.

Stickers on slipcovers? Nah I don't care. I've kept my slipcovers but they're hidden away. If something happens to them oh well. Stickers on actual boxes? Hasn't happened yet. I suppose it could be annoying but some little care and it's gone.
