My sister had HBO in the 80s. We had antenna, 5 channels, ABC, NBC, CBS, Independent, PBS until the late 80s. So, yeah, it was cool to visit her in the city and watch HBO and MTV.

Not true. I love most types of horror films minus the "torture porn." The Shining is probably in my top ten horrors for sure, but I ain't below watching Freddy hack up some sleeping teenagers, or a pack of survivors fleeing the zombie apocalypse.

I agree though that the psychological horror is the best kind, and I think it stands longer than any other type of horror film. Jump scares are cheap and forgettable, but a creepy build up to a psychosocial assault can be awesome. Horror makers need to study Hitchcock and Kubrick more.

Agree 100%

I think it was Ebert that put it this way: "The sound of a monster in the woods is always scarier than an image of the monster making the sound in the woods."

By NOT showing us the subliminal imagery in psychological horror, we imagine it in our own heads, which is far more terrifying than an image on the screen (which is based on someone else's imagination).

Yes!

True Story: I hadn't seen any previous of Blair Witch. Went to girls' house to watch it in 2000. After watching it, I walked home at 1am. I looked over my shoulder about 50 times, during the 10 minute walk. I've never been that terrified since. I was 23 and almost called the girl I knew to come over and tuck me in

Never saw it. The idea of a bunch of guys in a tent in their apartment didn't appeal to me. Any good?

Like any film, how good it is depends on your expectations. But trust me, this is an EXTREME example of this principle.

The more you know about the film, the more parodies you read about it and the less open minded one is: the less enjoyable it will be.

If you decide to watch it, I'd obviously recommend the latter path - if it's not already tainted

An extreme example where a movie watching experience is almost entirely determined by the viewer's pre-viewing experience, not the movie itself.

Dan Myrick, half the team that came up with the movie, was in my high school class back in Florida. Its a great movie to watch late at night, with surround.

That's not Blair Witch. Not sure what movie you are thinking it is. But yeah, the less you know about it going in, the more you will enjoy it.

No argument from me - I think we're just saying we'd put it in the same "psychological horror" category. Along with Psycho, Orphanage, The Ring, The Others, etc.

Shining is my #1 favorite horror film!

Riverview in Sarasota. Being a USF alumni, I won't comment on his choice of colleges, lol.

Well, perhaps not. But one inspired a whole genre of horror movies. And it wasn't The Shining. Cloverfield, Rec 2, Quarantine, The Fourth Kind, Paranormal Activity, Apollo 18, etc. all inspired by Blair Witch. Any time you see a viral campaign about a movie touting its found footage, that goes back to Blair Witch.

I just kinda ignored it, mainly because of all the hype. The more something is hyped, the more disinterested I become. The only parody I ever saw was of a close up of a dude blowing snot bubbles. So basically, I know close to nothing about it.

I guess I can netflix it. Maybe have it in time for Halloween.

The viral marketing and shakey camera style doesnt make up for mediocre art.

The real question is what version to get - the longer, slower US cut or the shorter, tighter UK cut. Both have merits, but I think (and it's suggested that Stanley also preferred it) the UK cut is superior.
