PlayStation 3 enjoys record pre-orders

Monday, February 12 2007, 15:14 GMT

By David Gibbon
Advance orders for Sony's highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console have broken all records, with high street stalwart Woolworths revealing it has been taking one order every 20 seconds during the past week.

The state-of-the-art PlayStation 3 will go head-to-head with Microsoft's Xbox 360 when it hits the shops on March 23 and Woolies, one of the first stores to accept pre-orders, has admitted it has been staggered by the demand.

Gerry Berkley, Woolworths' head of games, said, "It's the hottest gaming system since the PS2 launched in 2000 - demand will outstrip supply."

With a retail price of £425, the 60Gb PlayStation 3 costs £125 more in the UK than in the US, but this has failed to deter those determined to try out Sony's latest dream machine.

Well of course, this doesn't matter. As PS3 is a failed system that doesn't sell. I bet all of those Pre-orders were paid for by Sony. Hahahah, Casino Royale is on a 50gigabyte disc, those are myths that don't work. And it will spell blu-rays doom! Because obviously when Blu-Rays sales numbers increase after PS3s release it means that maybe one or two PS3 owners are buying discs! Sony is buying the rest themselves.

Great news for HD-DVD!

/sarcasm.

This was has become a joke, Universal just needs to commit seppeku before the BDA and be reborn blu.

i didnt know that Woolworths sell game console, in Australia (where the parent company belong), Wollies is known pretty much as a fruit and vegies market .

Nevertheless, this is good news for Sony and the Playstaion 3 as some source also stated that this will the biggest launch ever.

Any chance that Universal will piss off BDA so much with protracted exclusive support for hd-dvd that eventually, the BDA does not allow them to publish?

Is that a viable & legal business threat that can be used to make universal switch?

I mean, seriously, what are they waiting for? If MS is paying them indirectly, I suggest sony get some of its dough flowing their way.

If MS is not paying them, then universal has to be one suicidal studio.

Churchill would have been moved to oratory by this news, if he was as big a fan of PS3 as I am (and he was around today, of course).

Correct Woolworths is food chain, but also has a number of I guess an equivalent of Kmart stores called Big W. They also own a chain of electronic stores a cross between Consumer Electronics and a few electronic components call Dick Smith Electronics and now they now own the Australian chain Tandy (not the US group) I intend to get my PS3 there as I can get a 5% through the company I work for.
As far as I'm aware there is no relationship between the Aus and UK woolies (there most probably was some tie up once upon a time)

I'm a bit grumbly, EU's getting freaking Casino Royale and we got Talladega Nights?

Bah I say! But I guess that's part of the price for our price for being earlier . That and being cheaper in the US too, so I guess I should really just shut up and play some more Marvel.

The Europeans deserve some extra love for being forced to wait this long.

Yes, it may still be around in some capacity (maybe bought out by Sears?) Remember the scene from 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?', "And stay out of Woolworth's!"

At 1 every 20 seconds, if the store was open for 10 hours. Thats 1800 pre-orders a day meaning 12,600 pre-orders in a week. If that's for all stores that's not much but if they had even 10 stores at the same volume thats 126,000 pre-orders for just one chain of stores.

Woolworth transformed itself into Woolco (a big box retailer) in Canada. And was very successful. The irony for us is that Woolco was bought out by Wal-Mart as the basis for its initial entry into the Canadian market.

Buying out the main competition seems to be a common strategy. Best Buy did the same thing with Future Shop. But, in that case, they kept those stores going and have expanded that chain.
