I seem to be having a HDMI/Handshake issue but it doesn't sound like it's nearly as bad as some of the ones described here.

Basically if I turn the PS3 on and just watch AVI's or stream content from my PC it's fine. But if I start up a game or Blu-ray (and it subsequently has to send out 5.1 audio of some kind) it goes into a kind of random flicker fit where my TV goes black/blue a dozen or so times before it finally settles down and will display the video/audio.

It only recently started and it varies in intensity each night, but it's getting kind of ridiculous. Just wondering if this is something others have experienced or not? I haven't done any cable/device testing yet so it could be the TV or PS3 (or HDMI cables), but I'm leaning towards receiver anyway...

Yep, it's the beginning of the end. Mine started like that.
Now, I need to pretty much turn everything on 15-20 mins before I want to watch something. And still most of the time I need to switch back and forth between inputs to get any kind of picture.
Before the end of the month I'm switching to a Pioneer and I can't wait.

Mine is now starting to have the handshaking problem. First the OSD stopped last summer and now, it starting to not recognize my HD DVR and today it started to not detect my PS3 and other Blu-ray player. It takes about 2-5 minutes for it to work though... (Sigh)

How many of you 606 owners are running the Audyssey 2EQ...and how many have manually configured it/calibrated with your own personal settings, or perhaps an SPL meter?

Just had a weird fault with my onkyo 606. I had it on, but wasn't visibly watching the TV. It made the usual relay click sound when you change audio inputs, though I hadn't changed them myself. I turned to look at it, and the picture had gone off on the Tv as well.

It then clicked again almost straight away to redetect the audio and the picture came on. It wasn't set to sleep, as it wouldn't have turned itself back on. Anyone know what this is?

I'm worried it's over heated, except it's had plenty of ventilation above it, never done this before, and I've had the windows open all day as it is. it's worked fine in hotter conditions and never done this fault.

Is this a known issue, sign of power supply failure, or just nothing to worry about? I hope it's nothing, as I'm out of warranty I believe.

You seem to know about the 606. I keep getting this flickering when I watch Direct TV for the first 2 min and then it stops. Do you think it is the receiver or something else...Just curious..it goes away after 3 flicks typically and only returns when I turn the receiver on. Any help would be appreciated.

These 600 series ONKYO AVRs must be worthless. I am glad I have never bought one. I have read and know people with the 606,and 608 series and they have had nothing but problems with both models. I read that the current 609 model was outstanding for what features it has to offer such as MARVEL video upscaling "WHICH OPPOs USE" , Audessey DSX, and some other well known features offered on the higher end models. Anyway after reviewing the 609 and looking at the history of the entire 600 series I dont advise anyone to purchase any 600 series ONKYO product regardless of the features they offer. The 709 series currently is known to be the best low end AVR on the market according to serveral reviews I have read from respectable companies for the year 2011. This year the ONKYOs offer some fancy features that are only found in the higher end models but someone is going to have to buy one first and it sure as hell will not be me. I always thought ONKYOs were first class products and maybe they are "except the 600 series" but beware because there are numerous problems with ONKYOs lower end AVRs.

I'm currently playing the new batman game on my ps3 slim, I own a onkyo 605, but I though I'd ask you guys. When I'm playing the display reads "direct" or "multi ch" so I'm asking which one should I use? And how come it doesn't read Dolby digital like it does when I play my Xbox?

Under sound settings on your ps3, you'll need to change output of audio from "Linear PCM" to "Bitstream". Then your reciever will display DD.

I've changed mine to "Bitstream" for BD/DVD, but have kept the gaming audio to "Linear PCM"

Judging by your response I take it PCM is the way to go for games? So I'm doing everything right, I was just wondering if "direct" was the right setting, but I think all ps3 games are PCM right? Some games like uncharted have dts and Dolby digital....

I have to agree, well at least for the 606... I'm going to have to upgrade to another receiver. Mine still works but I have to let it run for 20-25 minutes before it starts to recognize a signal. I take it as a sign that it'll go kaput soon, which is sad because I really was raving about the 606 when I first received it.

Oh boy...

I think I spotted this guy ^^^ over at Audioholics, too, bashing all Onkyo products as well; this just seems like another manufacturer-specific bashing session to me.

For the record, no, the "entry level" Onkyo's ARE NOT "worthless" (in fact, I don't even consider the 600-series "entry level" because at $500 and up, to me, that's midpriced for the average working person...plus, there are other models below the 600 line that would actually benefit more from an "entry" classification); I have owned my 605, which was the first of this family to boast onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio decoding (and perhaps the first on the market to do so when it was launched), since the model came out and have had ZERO problems with it. Still working as good as the day it was removed from the box; it has been an AWESOME workhorse in my system. Further, I also own the first model in Onkyo's now famed 600 lineup, the TX-SR600, which served as the receiver in my very first surround setup, and even though a cross-country move, sitting for YEARS in 100 degree-plus heat in storage and enduring a massive dent on the side of the chassis, this thing STILL kicks out the tunes being used in a music system in my workout room.

My 605 has been FLAWLESS since day one; it's surprising that your 606 has been giving you this kind of grief...

To be honest, I wouldn't buy a receiver other than an Onkyo...

BTW kndy -- I checked out your HT gallery; nice!! As a 50" screen owner, I have to ask how you like watching films -- which you seem to be VERY enthusiastic about -- on your 51" display? I know how you feel about your Onkyo 606...

MOZ...

I just wanted to say...

After looking at your gallery of HT pics, I have to agree with what most everyone commenting about your setup was stating...

POOR MAN'S HT? YEAH...POOR MAN'S HT MY ASS!!!

Okay...sorry about the enthusiasm there...but you have one kick ass setup; it's FAR from a "poor man's" home theater room buddy...

The TX-SR606 is a known problematic receiver. It happens though. Nearly every manufacturer out there has had models with issues in recent years. As far as Onkyo goes the 606 has been the only one with major issues. The 608 had some minor issues, but premature failure is not one of them. I owned a 605 until recently and it worked flawlessly. I've never had an issue with it. Onkyo makes very good products, and they probably sell more AVR's than any other brand out there. Because of their large volume of sales issues are mentioned more often than with other brands, but the actual percentage of problems are no worse and probably lower than their competitors.

I think my baby is starting to give up the ghost Took a couple of times of shutting on and off for the PS3 to work now nothing. Cable works better. Sony 350 seems to work a lot better. Lot better Blu player IMO too Must be some kind of signal sensing garbage circuitry garbage. Whatever. Now I have to shop for a receiver on top of me almost destroying my TV!?!?!? Any suggestions for a new receiver greatly appreciated bwaaaaaah
