The timing of the announced firing could have been better. Doing it at something like 7 or 8 AM would have minimized potential riots. The announcement late in the evening doesn't mix well with liquored up frat kids looking to pillage and plunder.

Same you don't one day in 2000 wake up and say hmm I think I'll try little kids

Paterno enabled kids getting abused, alum and fanboys can try to spin it however they want, at the very end that's what took place. Glad he's gone.

But the real question is how deep does this river run? With the acts taking place in the locker room, how many OTHER coaches and personnel are privy to this situation... Bradley? Hall? Paterno (the son)?

I had an odd feeling of sadness when I was watching the press conference announcing Paterno's firing. I totally thought Paterno needed to be fired immediately but it was still sad that this was how one of the greatest coaching careers of all time was going to end. It's amazing how in less than a week a man's legacy can completely change. I always had a level of respect for Paterno although I thought he should have retired years ago but that respect is now gone.

I'm glad he was still coaching he might not have gotten near the thumping had he retired awhile ago someone who enabled that to take place should get.

If this is true Happy Valley is toast!

Quote:
In April, Pittsburgh radio host Mark Madden wrote a story revealing Penn State for much of the cover-up of Jerry Sandusky's alleged child rape that has been exposed in the past week. While it didn't raise many eyebrows back then, six months later it looks to be incredibly accurate.

On Thursday morning, just hours after legendary head coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were fired by the school's board of trustees, Madden was asked on The Dennis and Callahan Show what he believes the next piece of news will be.

What he said was twice as shocking as anything that's been released thus far.

"I can give you a rumor and I can give you something I think might happen," Madden told John Dennis and Gerry Callahan. "I hear there's a rumor that there will be a more shocking development from the Second Mile Foundation -- and hold on to your stomachs, boys, this is gross, I will use the only language I can -- that Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors. That was being investigated by two prominent columnists even as I speak."

An attorney advising some of Sandusky's victims released an interesting statement this morning:

Quote:
"The board of trustees got it wrong. They should have consulted the victims before making a decision on Mr. Paterno," Ben Andreozzi said. "They should have considered these victims watch TV and are aware of the students' reaction and may not want to be associated with the downfall of Mr. Paterno. The school instead elected to do what it felt was in its own best interest at the time. Isn’t that what put the school in this position in the first place?"

"The way the Board reached its decision raises more concerns than the decision itself. There is no indication the Board considered the impact of the decision on the abuse victims," Andreozzi continued. "The school let the victims down once, and I think they owed it to the victims to at least gauge how the immediate termination decision would impact them as opposed to Mr. Paterno's resignation at the end of the year. These victims do not live in a bubble.

"They see the students reaction to the termination, and to think this does not weigh on their minds would be naive."

I agree. Even those "students" wouldn't be caught dead on their facebooks/ twitter degrading a victim.

Lame. The University's Board of Trustees acted in the best interest in PSU while faced with a horrible situation. They are trying to mitigate any financial settlements from the ensuing lawsuits by the victims/victims' families.

It will eventually come out that the AD and Paterno sat Sandusky down in 1998 and told him two things -- 1. you will not be the head coach of Penn State, and 2. if you retire now, we'll bury these allegations.

Penn State has to clean shop before it anything else gets out. You have to remember, most of the board stated that they found out of the scandle from the media. There was a lot of information withheld from them, and now that they know, they are making decisions quickly to clean up the mess.

No one in their right mind is going to blame the victims of these horrible crimes for causing Joe Pa to be fired. Joe Pa was fired because Joe Pa didn't speak up.

I'm going to be curious if Penn State is going to be able to get a big name coach. Urban Meyer's name is getting thrown around a lot because his daughter goes to Penn State but if he takes a job I'd have to think it'd be Ohio State. Kirk Ferentz is a Pennsylvania native but I can't see him leaving a stable Iowa job for the turmoil at Penn State. Miami's Al Golden, a former Penn State captain and assistant, could be a possibility. It's been rumored he could leave Miami without penalty because they didn't disclose they were under NCAA investigation when they hired him. Rutger's Greg Schiano is another possibility. He coached at Penn State from 1990-1995.

May even go further then that why did no other college contact him for a head coaching job when he left Penn State. Means most likely this goes well beyond Penn State. One of the most highly sought after coaches for a head coaching gig just does not drop out at 55 for no reason in 1998.

Penn State and Ohio State gonna have an open bidding war for Meyer will be very interesting to see how this plays out. Especially if the NCAA levies any bowl or loss of scholarship fines against the universities.

The NCAA can only levy sanctions against tOSU (if any at all). AFAIK, PSU hasn't violated any NCAA bylaws.
