...without question it's worth it. Afterall, the broadcast specification for HD is 720p/1080i....bluray under 720p & 1080i is quite close to what you would have under 1080p assuming a good quality set, proper calibration, viewing distance & all that jazz.

I have a 50" 720p TV and sit about 10' away from it. I can clearly see the difference between a Blu-ray and an upscaled DVD even at that distance.

Yes, it really should be much better and a great experience.

I´m using a 720p DLP front projector, the image is very detailed and also very sharp. Upconverted dvds look nice, but you can tell anytime if it´s real HighDef or upconverted stuff. (If the blu isn´t one of the very few stinkers regarding pq ) The improvement in pq going from 720p to 1080p is subjectively smaller, than going from 480p to 720p (or even 1080p) btw, so just enjoy your blu's on your 720p, until you decide to upgrade to a 1080p set.

imo

As a matter of fact, with that size tv screen and your viewing distance, your eyes would be extremely hard pressed to see the difference between 720p and 1080p. Without doubt Blue Ray on 720P is worth it!

Happy viewing..

Not trying to hijack a thread, but what about the difference between 720p and 1080i? I have a projector that does both and I've been using the 1080i setting but now I'm starting to wonder if I should use 720p instead.

(Yes, I'll do my own tests, but I'm just trying to get a feel for what everyone else thinks about it as it might end up being a calibration issue for me as well).

I would say it's worth it. I have a 37" 720p LCD set, and there's definately a big difference between an upscaled DVD and a Blu-Ray disc. Even my wife was blown away by the difference in quality when we first got Blu-Ray, and while she's into movies and stuff as well, she usually doesn't notice more subtle things that I tend to pick up on, so even from the view of a more casual observer there is a difference.

And, it's probably not a bad idea to start building a Blu-Ray collection now. That way when and if you ever upgrade to a better TV with 1080p resolution, you'll already have a decent collection of movies to take full advantage of that resolution. If you keep just buying DVDs now and then upgrade your set later on, then you'll be trying to upgrade a 480 image to 1080p, and while that will help, it will look NO WHERE near as good as a full 1080p Blu-Ray movie.

Depends.

I guess you have a digital projector? One rule of thumb is to eliminate as much scaling as possible. So most of the time it is good to feed the pj / hdtv with its native resolution. I have a 720p (native resolution) pj and i am feeding it 720p, scaled by the player.

But it could very well be, that the deinterlacer/scaler build into a display is better than the one in the source/player. In that case, it might be better to let the display do any deinterlacing/scaling.

That why imo it is always better to just test the different options. But so far, feeding with the native resolution of the display worked best for me.

My set is 1080i. I know I'm not getting the full potential out of blu today, but I'm building a collection that I'll enjoy even more when I get my 1080p set (hopefully this year)

I just wanted to say that I appreciate this thread, as I have a 720p set, and I have a PS3 (that I have yet to plug in) I do plan on upgrading, and given the fact that I have a pretty decent collection, and paid more for other things I find far less important than my t.v., I've been questioned on why I went 720p......

here's my reasoning.... I got my 720p Sharp Aquos LCD television 2 years ago, maybe longer.... 1080p was available, but I did my research and I found, that at the time, the best I was going to get from standard DVD with Component was 480p, and I'm not terribly into television, so I wasn't about to pay a cable or satellite provider an extra $30 a month or so for a limited number of HD broadcasted stations. Since the Price jump was so great from 720P to 1080P, I got the 720p, and vowed, that one day when I began viewing a large amount of material that I was capable of 1080p (whether that be television packages went all-HD at no extra cost, or whatever, I didn't know two years ago) So, Now I have a blu-ray player, but I'm not running out to get a 1080p, I'm gonna build up my collection of DVDs FIRST Then, I'll to 1080p I'm sure the upconversion alone on the Blu-ray player will be nice for my 1,000 + existing standard DVD collection..... and since there aren't that many Blu-Ray discs available right now that I'm chomping at the bit to buy, (I picked up 17 yesterday however) I'll wait, and get my 50" 1080P LCD for $800 in a year or so, and be just as happy as can be!!!!

I have a Sim2 300e 720 DLP FP paired with a 100" Firehawk screen. At first I set the 1200 to 1080i. The picture was good but not "WOW". When I changed the 1200 to 720p to match the native resolution of the Sim the difference was night and day. Especially on Apocalypto. Simply gorgeous.

So to circle back to the origihal question of the OP; yes Bd on 720p is absolutely worth the investment.

Honestly, 720 at that size is rather low. I recommend 1080 for anything bigger than about 36". And a MUST for anything bigger than 42".
But that is just me. Yes it will look better. Upconverting might look good, but not as good. However, I have never tried it before.
