Next greatest blind-buy: “X-Men: First Class.”

[Show spoiler]No, I did not get this as part of the B&N Criterion sale. But I sometimes wonder how it’d be if Criterion released more blockbusters like these.

This prequel plays out the same way “The Phantom Menace” contributed to the “Star Wars” saga. That is to say that “XM:FC” goes about introducing the classic characters from the beginning, shows their origins, and explains how everything came into being before the first “X-Men” film. It’s also pretty darn thrilling, as mutants get to use their powers in imaginative ways and wreak mass destruction. The action and special effects in this film might be some of the best of the “X-Men” saga, with plenty of decent fights, lots of ‘splosions, buildings collapsing, massive sea vessels flying through the air, and more!

My only complaint is, this is one of those films that is just jammed-packed with scenes. The scenes are short, so the film has an even and constant pacing. But at two full hours, with so many scenes, the film manages to cover so much ground, and it feels way longer than it should. Maybe not a terrible thing, as the story manages to fill up the entire space sublimely, but I feel it’s really dense that way.

It’s the story that I found most impressive. I have no real clue as to how this compares to the comics, nor am I really conscious of any discontinuity with the other four “X-Men” films. In fact, I was impressed as to how well everything fit into place; we get to see exactly how Charles and Erik became friends, how they got into their positions, how they got their fancy tech, among many other things. The film even managed to cover aspects that seemed relevant to the (arguably atrocious) third film. I was also intrigued to see the film’s connection with Cold War events (the
[Show spoiler]Cuban Missile Crisis has always intrigued me
. Above all, the characters are deeply explored and portrayed in a manner that is true and proper. And for most of the film, the same themes are evident that were in the first three “X-Men” films, in regards to human prejudice, violence, and war. The film must spend most of its time debating whether or not mutants should be siding with the human race; it’s a question that drives the characters, drives the plot, and ultimately drives the franchise.

As a film, it looks splendid, with superb photography and editing. There may have been one or two spots where I felt more shots should have been added for a smoother scene (specifically, when the
[Show spoiler]plane crashes into the beach
. Most of the acting comes off as fine and dandy, but as expected, I did enjoy James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender was surprisingly badass. And I was thrilled to see Michael Ironside in a brief role. Writing is pretty good. This production has decent-looking sets, props, costumes, and special effects, all of which fit into the franchise pretty well. Music is awesome.

4.5/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

Recommendation: Sure, why not?

This Blu-Ray looks darn near perfect, save for some scenes with a lot of grain/noise. Sound quality is good.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

Notes:
  • I thought I read somewhere that there would be two sequels to this, forming a prequel trilogy or something? But as near as I can tell, this one movie covered all the major bases; I think you could easily watch this as the one and only prequel before getting into the main three “X-Men” films. However, I’m still interested to see “The Wolverine” and “Deadpool” and more when they come out.
  • Like I said, I'm not seeing any glaring continuity errors. I suppose there could be some if you analyze it next to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," but at this point, I doubt it'll be regarded as a true prequel anymore.
  • I laughed pretty well when they briefly showed
    [Show spoiler]Wolverine...
[Show spoiler]
Erik Lehnsherr: Excuse me, I'm Erik Lehnsherr.
Professor Charles Xavier: Charles Xavier.
Logan: Go f**k yourself.

  • Still prefer Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.
  • My "X-Men" film ranking now are...
"X2: X-Men United" 5/5
"X-Men: First Class" 4.5/5
"X-Men" 4/5
"X-Men: The Last Stand" 4/5 (3.5/5 lowest)
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" 3/5

This worked much better for you than it did for me. I did enjoy it, but only to a 3.75/5 level

I go back and forth between the first two movies as to which is my favorite. I forget which was on top last time I watched them.

Hate those.

So far, Super 8 is still the best film I've seen this year.
The thing I (mainly) know him from is Remember the Titans. He's been in a number of small roles that I've seen though.

Thor is still my favorite of the year

Right on! I saw your review, and I got to admit that you did catch onto a few glaring mistakes that just didn't register with me for some reason (like
[Show spoiler]Kevin Bacon not knowing that his sub was thrown to the beach while was inside it...
).

I'm not sure if my next viewing will reflect the same grade; a 4/5 might be a more appropriate score, but it'd still be my second-favorite of the series.

Finally got around to trying to create a definitive top 100 list of favorite films. I swear that this list seems to change all the time, but this time around, I grouped all my 5/5 movies in the top 66 or so, and everything else from there. Above all, I've ranked them according to personal resonance and replay value, rather than what's considered the best (I know some of you will hate some of these choices).

Yea there are some serious things in there, some of which should have been caught as soon as cameras rolled on them and others that were script issues that could/should have been fixed with a little bit more time for the production.

The original two are still my favorites

I tried to like Thor a lot because it was the Marvel superhero movie I've always anticipated most. After I saw it though, I couldn't score it more than a 4/5 because it didn't wow me as much as it simply entertained me. It still had more potential. Really enjoyed it though.

Yep, action, adventure, and epics appeal to me the most. I think I hold the most interest in sci-fi and fantasy.

You got a lot of good ones on your list. I actually came verrryy close to adding "City of Life and Death" and "Baraka" to mine.

"Battle Royale" and "The Fall" are great. Got 'em on Blu-Ray!

As far as recommendations go, I'll have to get back to you on that. I'm not big into high-brow/romantic comedies, but I'm sure there are one or two surreal films I could think of.

Dude! You need to see Kwaidan. It takes you into another dimension.

Masaki Kobayashi film, director of Harakiri.
"Thor" (in addition to most of the other superhero flicks this year) came off the same way; enjoyable, but not exceptional.

Anyway, "Kwaidan" is now on my rent list. "Harakiri" came in today, I'm just not sure when I'll get around to it. Been a little too crazy with the blind-buys lately...

I gave it a 4.5...I highly enjoyed it...but it definitely had potential to be better in several key areas. I was really looking forward to what Branagh would do with the sequel now that the "origin" is out of the way...but...we'll never find out now that he's not returning

Yeah I'd agree on it being underrated, only because I never really hear much about it. I really like Fincher's work and can't wait for Dragon Tattoo

I wanted to watch Horrible Bosses over the summer, but with it getting released so close to Harry Potter over here (I think it was 2 days before, or a week after) it just fell into the vacuum left by that film and everything that came out just wasn't acceptable to most. Which is a great shame, since this was the best comedy I've seen in a while (and definitely this year), and I was left wondering how much of a better time I would of had watching it with a like minded audience.

Comedies are usually hard things to review, they either come down to two things, they are funny or they're ain't, and pulling a lengthy review saying what makes it great is pretty pointless, because it's going to come down to two things, did I find it funny, and if so how funny?

The answer is yes, and very!

However, Horrible Bosses is better than most comedies on other levels as well. Horrible Bosses is a well directed film above from a comedy. It's got a very interesting plot that isn't too far from a Hitchcock film itself, it's full of very well done twists and turns and it's good to see a comedy that has great characters that you care what happens too, and you really want to see how they get out of the problems they get in, if anything, it should push it way beyond a "watch if you're feeling a bit down" to a "Must see right now"

Only problem I had was that it had a very weak ending (as in it was very anti-climatic) and the dick jokes do get a bit redundant as they get used time after time

I really enjoyed the film, and I will be keeping a solid eye out for when it hits the sales

Both X-Men and Super 8 reviews were to an adiquate standard, give yourselves a pat on the back

Watched Inglorious Basterds, wasn't really in the mood to watch it, nor to review it since it'll be on around in this thread somewhere and my thoughts shall stay the same as that one

Going back a couple of days, but I am considering a blind buy of this along with the other movies I pick up on Black Friday since it will be $11.99. I was going to just rent it and see first, but the price being low means there's little risk.
