Most problems with cheap cables (or splitters for that matter) are dropouts. I have a very cheap HDMI cable that was attached to my PS3. I had dropouts all the time. It's been replaced with a nice cable (not 'Monster expensive' mind you) and dropouts are a thing of the past.

Video/Sound degredation is different than dropouts.
