Default Onkyo 605 Question

I am interested in upgrading equipment but I dont want to watch in 720p. I like 1080i personally. Can I run the PS3 HDMI 1.3 to the 605 for audio only. Run the PS3 component output to the receiver and get 1080i?

I do believe so, in the PS3 settings menu/audio options you can change which cable you want to use for audio output, just set that to HDMI and then use component for video.

You can get 1080i output through HDMI.

Hmm. I thought it passed HDMI straight through and only down converted signals from non-HDMI inputs.

If I'm wrong, are there other receivers which do it as I've described?

Nope.... the solution

is to run HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver, then HDMI to your display
the 1080i signal will go thru the receiver, not touched. You are confusing the ability to take other signals and convert them

I dont have a HDMI input on my sharp projector just component. Can I run HDMI strictly to get HD sound.
Use component output on PS3 to receiver without being downgraded to
720p???

That is correct. The only thing the 605 down converts is component 1080i/p video.

I don't see why not. I don't own a PS3, so I can't comment if all of it's video inputs are on all the time or not.. The Onkyo isn't going to care if it doesn't do anything with the video signal.

I don't think you can do what you are describing:

PS3 > Component > SR605 for video
PS3 > HDMI > SR605 for audio
SR605 > Component > TV

While I think the PS3 will allow you to output the video on Component and the audio through HDMI, I think the limitation will be on the 605 since in order to get the 605 to accept audio from HDMI, you have to set the HDMI Input Setting to either "HDMI IN1" or "HDMI IN2". But doing so, you may not be able to set the same device in the Component Input Setting on the 605 to use a component IN jack.

I could be wrong, though.

I think we are all getting confused.
the way I hear you...

connect the ps3 to the 605 w/ HDMI for audio
connect the ps3 to the Projector w/ Component for video
or
connect the ps3 also to the 605 w/ Component for Video
and the 605 to your projector w/ Component for video
connect a Sat feed or cable via Component for that video
and leave the HDMI for advanced sound

I hope I wasn't confused, but the statement I quoted seemed to indicate that he wanted your second scenario, which, I don't believe is possible with the 605. I say this because I think when you set the HDMI Input Setting on the 605 to either HDMI IN1 or HDMI IN2, it assumes that device will be getting both audio and video through HDMI. I was looking through the manual and don't see how you can then set the Component Input Setting on the 605 to the same device that you selected in the HDMI Input Setting.

Again, I could be wrong. Now I'm curious, so I'll probably go through the menus on the 605 tonight.

Just went through my 605 menus. You can set the audio through option 4 (Digital Input) in the input/output menu.

It's Digital input, you can have that on HDMI while the Component Video Input is is set to Input 1 or wherever it's plugged in. If memory serves, Crackinhedz father(?) has his running this exact way. I remember inquiring to set up my dad's tv. He just hasn't bought everything yet.

You have an excellent memory.

Yes my father does have a 605 and does run component video from the PS3 through the receiver and HDMI from the PS3 to the 605 for audio.

Program the Input selection, VIDEO IN to Component, AUDIO to HDMI and be sure to turn HDMI VIDEO OUT to off.

Also, set the PS3 video output to Component and audio output to HDMI.

You'll be good. Some actually prefer component for HD signals. So don't worry about getting an inferior picture. The cool thing is that if you get a new tv that is 1080p, all you need is an extra HDMI cable (from receiver to tv), change a couple settings on the PS3 and your good to go.
