I guess I am the only one who is sick to death of remakes and "reimaginings". They already had many prequel elements to Freddy's childhood and human adult backstory in "Freddy's Dead"... we met his mother in parts 3 and 5... what else is there to do?

Just do another sequel while the big man is a little interested, he really doesn`t want to wear the make up, but i say let freddy(robert englund) go out with a huge bang!

I was always under the impression that Freddy was a child molester and murderer. They only time they really showed that side of him was in Freddy vs. Jason when he was he pulled out of the girl's dream when he was about to rape her.

I am kinda late to the party, but Batman Begins is a prequel, and look how that revitalized a dying franchise. I also thought Superman Returns was great, albiet a little off continuity-wise. My four year old son loves Superman now because of Superman Returns, not the 70's Superman. I also LOVED the Star Wars prequels, and don't understand why they are criticized so heavily. Aliens vs. Predator could have beet better, but it was still an okay "prequel".

I think prequels, done right, can increase the enjoyment of an established franchise.

As far as remakes go, Batman Begins is great, and wouldn't mind seeing it done with Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street.

Actually, as noted, they covered most all the essentials at the end of "Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare", and yes, even that one had a "It was somebody else's fault!" origin.
(As "Psycho IV: the Beginning" demonstrated, just showing a day in the life of a nutball isn't particularly horror, particularly if we know he won't be getting around to doing his classic act yet.)

And if it hasn't been mentioned yet, the reason we're getting this is New Line, not Wes--
New Line wants Michael Bay to squeeze out one more "Texas Chainsaw"-style slicko-remake--with the same Marcus Nispel director, of course--but since they're keeping it in-house, why not the Franchise That Built New Line, for corporate vanity's sake?
Oh, and since they now own Jason, they want Nispel to do the "Friday the 13th" remake, too.

(Basically, we're one step away from getting Michael Bay-produced remakes of "The Mask" and "Fellowship of the Ring"...)

Wes Craven's New Nightmare was an excellent reboot of the series and whatever else they do with the series should be in the same vein. Freddy is at his best when he's less jokey and more meanacing. If they can come up with a story (prequal, sequal or reboot) that stays true to the spirit of the original and New Nightmare then I'll be totally on board. If not, I hope it dies a quick and painful death.

Still, it's a good example of why Wes isn't on board for this one (apart from having his name contractually listed):

I don't know if anyone actually liked the potty-mouthed (well, it is a Wes Craven movie) and less-wisecracking #1&2 Freddy, who seemed to be "all tongue and no mouth"--
But watching New Nightmare, in which Wes wanders through the movie himself M. Night Shamalyan style, as a mysterious godlike figure, while everyone whispers "Did you hear he's working on another one?" in hushed awed tones...
One comes away from the movie with the clear directorial allegory of "Ohh, too bad, so you finally drove the franchise into the ground without me?--Well, now I'm not going to play anymore, so don't come running to ME when you all end up dead! "

(...Nooo, Wes isn't bitter about the third movie.)

I love the Elm series but Micheal Bay is gonna screw this one up... He makes good movies but he can't handle gore & horror.. hell, the man doesn't even want tities in his movies and we all know the horror sluts get killed.. Now what? I'm guessing this will be a kid friendly Freddy... Just wait, Freddy's claws will now be candy canes or some other lame crap

Well, from what i understand, he's just producing and not directing. So, he could just be a big fan of the franchise and wants to bring it all to a new generation.

Or, it could be that New Line wants to keep running their "Texas Chainsaw" remake franchise into the ground every August by the clock as long as they think it's selling, but they'd gone as far as they could go with Leatherface, and had to drum up some new remake busy-work for Marcus Nispel to do...

(...Do we even read earlier posts? )

i hate that every time there is word that a remake is coming for someone's "Favorite" series, it's automatically like blasphemy. I loved the nightmare series, but honestly, could the series get any worse? I mean, as long as they stay true to the heart of what made the series great, I don't see any problem. I mean, they released a ****ing 3d nightmare, how could it get worse. Wait until you see something before you automatically think the worst.

Blu Beard, that was one sweet synopsis. It's nice to have the whole story put together in one reading.

As for the whole hate it/love it point of views on remakes, to each his own.

Since were talking about remakes and we're on a blu site...

PLEASE GIVE US THE THING ON BLU!!!

I am so tired of Platinum Dunes. Texas Chainsaw, Amityville, The Hitcher, The Birds, Friday the 13th......and now Freddy. I am a lifelong horror fan, but I have mixed feelings about this. Believe it or not, the Nightmare Box set was my very first DVD purchase. Best $100 bucks I ever spent.

Anyway, if New Line was the sole entity behind all of this with Robert Shaye and Craven involved, I'd have full faith in the Nightmare project. However, I don't trust Platinum Dunes to do justice to the series. I was perfectly fine with them doing their thing until they started getting involved with the ruling class of slasher horror - ala Freddy and Jason. From the sounds of it, they are intending to make both of these movies 80% sequel, which is positive thing. We've already had their backstories told 8 and 11 times, respectively. I personally liked Jonathan Liebsman's style in Texas Chainsaw: The Beginning, despite it being a prequel. I'd feel better if he was still at the helm of the Friday movie, as opposed to Marcus Nispel.

And I sincerely hope Robert Englund is used and is allowed to go back to the original dark Wes Craven-style Freddy. If Wes Craven ends up involved with the project, I'll be in line on release day. I also hope Shannon and Swift drop the campiness used in Freddy vs Jason for their Friday the 13th project. I guess I'll have to judge this when more info comes available. I'll definitely be watching closely.

to the dude b4 me, I honestly agree that they are trying to make big bones off of things that are so close to our hearts. And honestly, they do a piss-poor job of getting the feel back, that we got when freddy pushed his head through the wall of nancy's room or the tongue through her phone or when leatherface did his little dance at the end of the og Texas chainsaw. These were memorable moments, things that stay with us for years to come. I think when they remake or reimagine or re-shit out these movies, keep in mind the lasting effect of the characters. And btw, if you saw Ben Foster in 30 days of night, you would see that he has the creep-factor of englund. Give him a try.

Default Here we go again!

Here we go again! Another unnecessary remake. I knew this day would come.
I'm all for the creepier Freddy (as he was portrayed in Nightmare 1 and 2) making a comeback. I definitely think that's the way to reboot the series... but it doesn't have to be a damn remake! Englund can still play Freddy and be haunting the dreams of teens elsewhere... the premise can still work in sequel form as long as the writers do it right.
I'd love to see Freddy SCARY again... and with today's technology, I can just imagine some of the amazing fantasy kills. Let's see a properly written sequel as the Nightmare reboot... and not another LAME remake.

wasnt the whole reason for freddy still being around, is to haunt the dreams of the children of elm street and kill them? I dont see how or why the **** he would be killing some kid in toluca lake or where ever. If they did some dumb shit like that, then the series would definitely be dead to me.
