The UK 5 Blu-ray Coen set is back at £14.95 http://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/the-coe.../10549758.html

It's looking more and more likely that Barton Fink has the same transfer world-wide so far. Unless we get something different from Fox in the US we may have to be happy with it. Not seen it yet but the fact it has no special features is a real shame. I've decided to get:

The French 2DVD CE (there was 2 in fact from Wild Side Video and BAC/Paramount) was always the best for special features so I've just bought it.

Although the French home video rights have reverted to Universal their upcoming February Blu-ray has no sign of any special features. Those may be lost forever on DVD. For those thinking about that 2DVD its this one http://www.ebay.co.uk:80/itm/390331811267 or http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0001E70EO/ or http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B000YQ8BGA/ Rough translation of what's on the 2nd disc from Google transtraltion (original page in French)

It's always been a weak DVD (French was always the best although it had forced subs (easily removed)). You'd think such a sucessful director/producer team would make a good investment for the studios for Blu-ray. Hopefully Fox will spend more than a $1.

Yeah, too bad about the extras, but the movie itself looks pretty good. The screencaps don't do it justice and it looks much better in motion. The extras on the U.S. DVDs sucked, only some deleted scenes. Are the extras on the French DVD good? I'm hoping the same studio might release it on Blu Ray and include the extras. As long as it not the stupid forced subtitles that so many French releases come with.

For that price I don't think one can complain too much.

Despite having all the films in this set except INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, I love BARTON FINK so much that I bought this set when it hit £15.

It finally arrived, I eagerly open it, only to find it contains TWO copies of INTOLERABLE CRUELTY and No copy of BARTON FINK!

Gutted - and now have to go through zavvi's interminable returns policy.

BARTON FINK is a mixed bag, PQ wise. It's a clear improvement over the dvd but it does show excessive sharpening and edge enhancement. I'd hope there was a better version along at some point.

Not nearly as much as other Universal releases. It has a healthy bit rate I am very happy with the picture, other than the few pitch black sequences of the movie. I don't have many Universal releases, only 5:

Do The Right Thing
The Thing
Scarface
Videodrome
Barton Fink

For me, Barton Fink has the second best PQ after Do The Right Thing, for those who can use the releases I listed above as a reference. For a Universal release, it's very good. It's been some time since I saw Barton Fink and it's been awesome to see it for the first time in years in HD! I love this movie, even more than before.

One of my all time favorites now. In fact, seeing it again made me love it so much that I'll be ordering the special edition DVD 2 disc French release just for the extras. Something about movies that take place in large hotels (The Shining) and how they get better over time.

Watched Intolerable Cruelty today. I really wanted to love it but was left with a neutral feeling. It's not a BAD film in any way but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed other Coen films.

Amazon now have this for the oddly priced £15.19 http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005OW7U7U matching Play http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/2...t/Product.html

All the 10% off coupons for Zavvi/TheHut seemed to have dried up but they still have it for £14.95 http://www.thehut.com/blu-ray/the-co.../10549758.html

Finished watching this great set last night. Loved Big Lebowski(seen before, of course) and Barton Fink. Really really enjoyed A Serious Man and Burn After Reading. Intolerable Cruelty was decent. Coen Brothers are great. I love how they leave many of the endings unanswered which on the other hand can be extremely frustrating. I think Michael Haneke is a bit similar in that context, e.g. Caché and the White Ribbon.

Based on my experience with the films on this set what other Coen films would you recommend? I already own Fargo and No Country For Old Men.
