It will be quite funny tomorrow when the media starts reporting the best and worst ads. They can knock Toshba both for the worst ad AND for trying to sell a dead product.

They should have done a Mastercard style ad: "Bribing a movie studio: $150 million. Airing a terrible ad during the SuperBowl: $2.3 million. Having millions of people laughing at you for pretending you hadn't already lost a format war: priceless."

i just saw that ad again and noticed something at the end, they list walmart as one of the stores you can buy an hd dvd player at along with best buy circuit city and one other.

isnt walmart only going to be selling blu ray hardware in their stores?

i thought i read something on here about that.

false advertisement maybe? haha

Gents, i think that was the ad! Unless the one in the middle of the game is different from the pre games.

And it's all so clear now why Shaq's basketball abilities have fallen off a cliff this year.

He's a dual sport athlete now. Jockeying must be hell on his body.

I doubt that was the ad. The ad during the game itself is supposed to be a huge deal. It is almost always the world premiere of the ad, so if the same company advertises earlier during the pre-game show, they will use an older ad for that.

If Toshiba just rolled out one of their lame "gosh isn't HD DVD cool" ads and ran the same ad during the pre-game show, then that would be unbelievably pathetic, even for them.

(I still find it hard to believe that the advertising industry has actually made this such a big deal that people will blather on about how they watch the Super Bowl for the ads. Can you imagine anything more sad than watching a 4-hour show to see commercials? And yet they actually have people saying that. Now that is some scary power they have.)

I think I read 2.7 million was the "average" price. Average does not mean everyone paid that. I would think there would be some type of slot / market coverage pricing difference.

Maybe I was wrong and they are that pathetic. From another thread:

Apart from that, it's just an old, reused crappy commercial, with a tag on the end about the $149 price point.

Also, the positioning, right at the first break before half time, is one of the worst you could really have. This is when a lot of viewers are hitting the bathrooms or grabbing a smoke before the half time show.
So it was the "what do we do after the game ad"? That's it? In SD?

Hopefully they at least took 300 out of it (it's in the online version of that ad).

Why didn't Sony have any ads during the Superbowl? I was kinda disappointed cuz I had some ppl over and that would've led into a conversation about how awesome blu-ray is
