Let me preface it by saying this movie isn't even close to as good as The Orphanage, despite having the same lead actress (Belen Rueda, who again puts forth a great performance) and a similar tone. The films are very different, with The Orphanage attempting to tell a poignant story with atmosphere over sudden shocks (for the most part). Julia's Eyes is much more of a horror film and far scarier, even if it is due mostly to the concept and cinematography. I thought the story was a bit odd (when all is revealed), but is a great set up to many unnerving scenes. What elevates the film to the level it's at (I originally scored it a 3) is the directing and cinematography. It's hard to believe this is a first-time director, because he does an incredible job. There are three of the most hair-raising scenes I've seen in any horror film ever. One is the opening, one is
[Show spoiler]cell phone corridor scene
and the other is the ending scene
[Show spoiler]in the house. The use of the old camera to essentially freeze frame the concluding struggle is bone-chilling.
For the third scene I list, which is in the spoiler, I'd rank it as one of the best horror movie scenes of all-time. It will never be as iconic as the Psycho shower scene or the Shining axe scene, or even the concluding image in the Blair Witch Project, but I believe it deserves to be on the tier just below them.
I don't remember this movie very well for some reason but I do remember expecting a great film and getting a good one. But I want to see it again now just to re-experience those scenes you mentioned!

I love the first two. I probably love Nemo, but it's been years since I saw it. Flushed Away was decent, but I prefer Wallace & Gromit. Haven't seen Puss in Boots.

[Show spoiler]i can certainly see why so many people would hate this.

this is decidedly un-American (i.e. not fast and not filled with explosions). yeah, it has brutal action and grisly, gnarly "fight" scenes, but it really takes its damn time getting there and many will have checked out by then.

Drive reminds me a lot of The American (with that Clooney fella) - slow moving, beautifully shot, very minimal dialogue and it ends in a way that Americans in particular hate (which i love ).

Gosling was great and it's nice to finally see him get his recognition as a major leading man (this and Crazy, Stupid, Love. helped a lot in 2011 ) and his ability to hold a presence even with no / minimal dialogue is impressive. not a lot of actors can do that.

Carey Mulligan was essentially useless and that role could have gone to anyone. she was pretty impressive in Never Let Me Go, but here she did nothing with her role.

Bryan Cranston makes a great cameo of sorts i almost forgot what he looked like with hair!

the music, the lighting, the colors, the texture and feel of the film were all spot on

there were quite a few scenes i loved and adored, and some that i felt were at best and could have been cut or altered a bit. i also am never a fan of an awesome main character getting dragged down because of some neighbor girl with a kid and Gosling's character never seemed like the type of guy who would suddenly be all about that, but i digress. aside from that flaw in the film () there wasn't too much i disliked.

loved the ending, loved the minimal dialogue, loved the long drawn out scenes.

however some reeeeeeeeeally took a bit too long. the first half hour in particular (after the awesome 5 minute opening) really kind of drags its feet almost to the point that this 100 minute movie starts to feel like a 5 hour movie. don't know if that will be a positive or negative on future viewings, but for now i'm gonna give the edge to "not a big fan of that". the second half of the movie is heavy in brutality which kind of divides the movie as far as "feel", but again, many likely will turn it off before reaching that point. and even when those scenes do arrive, this isn't a Transformers 15-minute bludgeoning CGI attack, so don't expect anything like that.

certainly not recommended for everyone. hell, i'd say it's recommended to about 1/10 of the regulars here. for those that enjoy this style of filmmaking, you will likely enjoy the hell out of it, but for those that are not fans of slower moving films (such as: The American, either version of Solaris, Adventureland, Lost in Translation) i'd recommend just avoiding Drive all-together.
I guess I need to see this The American film.

If you liked the emphasis made as the graphic violence scenes occur few and far between, watch A Prophet. Drive reminded me of A Prophet because it follows a quiet but strong-willed character, giving the violent scenes that much more UMPH when they do come along. The movie has to carry a particular consistent tone for this to be effective, but it works brilliantly in both of these films.

It's been years since I've seen Nemo too. I probably should have put Tangled there.

There is a dance fight scene in Puss in Boots that nearly gave me a heart attack from laughing so hard. Everybody's sense of humor is different though

I hope to be a part of that 1/10. I hated The American (as you already know), but I don't mind slower paced films as long as they aren't boring and have a stupid ending. Commenting on the other slow paced film you mentioned, I love Adventureland. Anyways, I have this from Netflix and will be watching it Sunday night. I fully expect to be a part of that 1/10th, which is obvious if you knew that this was probably the one film left from 2011 that I think could dethrone Super 8 as my favorite film from 2011. I know that's some lofty expectations, but oh well.

I would have just blind bought it like you did, but figured I might as well just rent it and wait for a sale since Sony movies aren't held back anymore on Netflix. I've been waiting to watch this for quite a while.

I take it this is a keeper for you then? I only skimmed the review obviously.

Chronicle

Good News - This is just under 10x better than Green Lantern
Bad News - Green Lantern managed to get just under 10x the budget of Chronicle

What is this world coming to...

Well hopefully this will wind up becoming good big news, since Chronicle is shaping up to becoming the first big hit of 2012, and rightly so.

The reasoning this film works is plain and simple. It takes your typical origin story, strips everything away from it, places three characters in the middle of it, and builds up it's own story from there on in. You make no reservations, there are no setting ups for sequels and crossovers. It's a singular self contained story, and a very well built one at that.

Acting is very good, mostly built from new comers, they all have well built legitimate chemistry, so much so that some of the lines must of been improvised on set, and a lot of the best scenes are from the characters interacting with each other. This film takes a character over spectacle approach to itself, which is essential due to its budget. The film smartly places characters with one another to show their relationships build and even better, conflict rising. The film takes a very subtle path to setting up it's plot...

...which leads to one of (if not only one of) my problems...

When the film is slightly less subtle, you begin to roll your eyes. The main character we follow winds up having a dying mother and a drunk abusive dad, which is about the most cliche the film gets. Obviously the scenes are well acted, and the scenes involving the father are suitably shocking and brutal portrayals of real domestic violence which plays to the films credit. However there come scenes where you so the dad call his son a loser, and his final scene is very much over played that it comes off more forced. In a lesser film, this would be a particular highlight, but in this film, it just comes across very weak compared to the best of everything else.

The only other problems I had where of course very minor, the budget is small so the special effects do look weak so some scenes detach you from the film, but most special effects shots are so small or shot in a way you can't make out everything. My only other problem might bother more people is that the whole found footage think sometimes is very stretched. There is a character simply added so they can establish that the film can have different camera angles, and it's very forced.

Yet, the whole POV idea of the film is also pulled off amazingly in a lot of the scenes, sometimes you have very simple scenes slowly building tension just because it does such smart things with the camera work. It's smart when it's done well, it's frustrating when it struggles to apply it genuinely into the films diegesis, but is never a film breaker

This film is written by John Landis' son, Max Landis, this is an interesting fact I came across and looking back on the film and really thought back on it that this might become as influential as An American Werewolf in London. Sure there are literally no connections between the two, but I feel that this will do to the Superhero genre that An American Werewolf did to Werewolf sub-genre. It takes what originally made the genre so good an applies it to modern day principles, adds characters and continually offers a mix between fun and joy and dramatic thrills. Just keep that in mind in about 10 years time when a new generation of film lovers appear

Not forgetting the new golden boy of Fox who's getting offered all sorts of big budget films now. Josh Trank, who puts everything he has into the film, and really pulls out a film that could of come across very cheesy into a well made thriller that is offering something you've not seen before on screen.

Without a doubt in my mind you should see Chronicle. Come the end of the year, and we see top lists being pulled together, the superhero film that will get top billing won't be the half cooked Spiderman re-slap, it won't be that big kahuna burger by Marvel that is The Avengers, and it probably won't be Ghost Rider 2. It will be Chronicle* it offers everything you could want from a film, and hopefully it will make huge waves in the term of shaping the genre and possibly some aspects of the film industry.

9/10

*Keeping in mind, Batman does have a lot of hype that could work against it

i'm 95% sure i'll keep it and kind of want to watch it again already tonight, so that has to say something about the film and me liking it right?

i'm very much intrigued by this film and am anxious to see it. i don't have super high hopes - i just have some weird fascination with anything that takes place behind a camcorder (Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, Quarantine, Paranormal Activity...) as it seems more "real" and neat even though it obviously isn't (although Blair Witch still seems ridiculously real to me ).

glad you and Diesel enjoyed it i look forward to seeing it someday.

9/10

*Keeping in mind, Batman does have a lot of hype that could work against it
That is quite a bold statement given that The Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers are the two superhero movies other than The Dark Knight Rises that would leave me shocked if they didn't turn out to be really good. Keep in mind I do want to see Chronicle when it comes out on Blu-ray, but I still think you might be overselling a little. Still, I'm glad you really enjoyed it.

I'll try to remember this when you review all three of the summer superhero movies.

i'm 95% sure i'll keep it and kind of want to watch it again already tonight, so that has to say something about the film and me liking it right?
Thanks. As long as it doesn't show Ryan Gosling taking apart his car, putting it back together piece by piece, then doing pushups, then taking a dump, then walking out and spreading out his clothes, then putting them on, then cleaning his car step by step, then meeting a woman, then not having sex with her, then
[Show spoiler]getting worried that his boss is going to kill him, then running down the middle of the street, then turning around, then getting shot, then getting into his car, and then driving to previously mentioned woman and dying right in front of her in the car
, then I think I'll be good.
[Show spoiler]Yes, I had to take another shot at The American.

Obviously it does...

I can actually say without a doubt in my mind that it really has potential to be better than those films, however, you can easily jump on me if I'm wrong. I think Chronicle will become the dark horse by the end of the year and many people will look back and say to theirselves "Wow, I rememeber being blown away by how good that film was"

I wasn't saying you're wrong. I can't say that since I have yet to see Chronicle, and of course the ones that aren't out yet. I just thought you might be jumping the gun a little since this year could end up rivaling 2008 in terms of the amount of high quality superhero movies. Everything is in place for The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spider-Man to be very good. It's just a matter of whether somebody took the golden opportunities and somehow managed to drop the ball, which would be a huge (obviously negative) achievement in my opinion.

I can't knock you completely anyways since you are one of the reasons why I blind bought both Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. You know how those went.
