onkyo's crazy audeyssey

hi its me again wanting some info on my setup........ ok so i hooked up my surrounds to compleat the 5.1 system and i ran the audeyssey here are my settings

crossover

- left,center,right, surrounds-150hz

speaker distance

-left 4.5 feet, center 4.0 feet, right 4.5 feet, surround right 4.5 feet, surround left 5.5 feet, sub 6.5 feet

spl

- left, -7.0db, center - 12.0db, right -8.0db, surround left -6.0db, surround right -9.0db, sub -15 db

these settings do NOT look right to me, everything looks uneven, like the distances shouldint they all be the same?

and what about the crossover frequency shouldint they be around 80hz? thats what everybody recomended i set them to.

and if i change the spl levels and the crossover's, with that erase the audeyssey?

i changed them around but it look's like nothing els got erased.

as for the sub, i set the crossover nob to 150hz and the gain volume to the 12 o clock position( as told in the manual) but since im using the lfe input on the sub shouldint that all be bypassed?

Im sorry to keep posting about my system but i dont want everything to be all wrong, does anybody have any advice? thanks.

I have the 805 and did not prefer the way Audyssey arranged my setup. It did set my fronts to full, and the others at at 60Hz but I didn't like the equilizer settings nor did I like the distances it provided. I only left it like that for a very short time. Go with the manual calibration, after all, YOU are the one listening, not that tiny little microphone!

Oh, and depending on the size of your speakers, I would set the crossover points at 80-120 Hz. Just make sure there is no distortion and everything should be fine!

Edit: I forgot about the sub settings. It also put mine waaaay to low. You'll have to bump it up. The Audyssey calibration is a good place to start, but I would definitely do some manual tweaking before you settle in for a movie.

if your speakers are not angled correctly, toe-in will affect volume. As your cc speaker is different from the others, it's efficiency can cause a difference in volume. It's best to post this question on another forum with a larger Onkyo audience base.... maybe AVS Forum...

oh and by the way i have my sub up front with my main's on the right side of the room, its kinda in a corner ( its next to my doorway) i here good bass all over, but there is ALOT of bass when i go close to the corner of where its at. and when i move to the left side of room i lose a little bit bass. is this normal?

Bump it up to whatever sounds good with little to no distortion. I think mine is set around +1dB. If you change something, the setup will no longer read Audyssey, but everything will remain the same (except the stuff you manually changed). Like I said, the Audyssey is just a good place to start.

As for your LFE channel. Bypass the crossover on your subwoofer (if you can). Set your gain no higher than half (12 o'clock) and then do some tweaking. Ideally, your subwoofer crossover should be at the same point as your speakers so there is no frequency gap, but since Audyssey set it at 150 Hz, Im guessing you are going to have a small gap, no way to avoid it. Without knowing or hearing your setup, my best advice for you would be to set the crossover point for both the speakers and the sub at 100 or 120Hz. This is really just a guess, it may sound better at another point, that will be up to you to figure out. It just takes time, home theaters are like people, they are all different!

what i ment was right now the receiver has my sub at 80hz(thx) but on my sub the crossover goes up to 150hz and thats where i set it at. what im asking is(what iv heard) since im using the lfe, is the sub internal settings turned off? and ran by the onkyo?.......thank you for the info.

how many seating positions are you calculating for? I think you have to do it for all 8 (or whatever the max is) or it will not work correctly.

I did mine on 3 positions and wasn't satisfied. Went back and re-did it and sounded better.

I have an Integra DTC 9.8 that I was unhappy with Audyssey also at first. You have to setup all positions, not just one or two. Use the order of seats from the closest example from your owners manual. USE ALL SEAT POSITIONS POSSIBLE!! It will help a lot. But, I would change your crossovers to what you think sounds best no matter what Audyssey set them to, 80hz is a good starting point. Also, you will have to bump up the sub level about 5-7 db. The small mics have a hard time getting bass levels right. It will EQ them right, but won't set levels as loud as you would want them. Bass won't sound as loud with Audyssey. It corrects bass and will set it to sound correct, which a lot of people are used to boomy, inaccurate bass.

The bottom line is if you use Audyssey correctly, it will improve the sound of your setup immensely.

To add on to that a bit, if the mic is not positioned correctly, you can get bad results pretty easily. This is usually pretty obvious because, in addition to not sounding better, it wil set your speaker distances to pretty obviously incorrect values. If they are off by more than a few inches, you are proabbly best served by discarding the results and starting over.

Also, I don't believe you have to do all 8 position measurements. You should be able to get good results from 1-3 readings, especially if 1 or 2 seating positions are all you want to opimize for.

The AVS thread is quite informative and has a lot of input from professional installers who use the pro Audyssey package as well, so it is worthwhile to read if you really want to get a lot of improvement out of the system.

yea i only ran 4 positions, so ill do 8 this time. but thers really not alot of space in my room to all 8. and you saod bump it up to 5-7 so it will be good at about 10-8 db right?.

now i have another problem i got a wirenut to connect two wire's together but my right surround speaker is not working. i twisted both ends together and then twisted that inside the wirenut but when i did a test tone from the onkyo i get no sound, what am i doing wrong?

Sounds like you shorted the amp... you need to run each wire to a seperate connection on the speaker. not wire nutted together

to me, you are trying to do too much at one time, take small steps
1) get all the speakers working
2) get audyssey to set the basic settings
3) tweak for taste

I already fixed it thanks, in stead of twisting them ALL together i twisted one wire to one wire. now all i need is another wire nut.

does anybody know why the dolby digital light doesint show up on my receiver anymore when im playing games?...... i just added surrounds speakers and i went into the ps3 sound settings and checked pcm 5.1 44khz and pcm 5.1 48khz. i already have the 2.0 pcm checked, dolby digital, and dts. but for some reson i cant choose dolby anymore(i could before). the only thing that lights up on my receiver is multichannel pcm. when playing movies i can select it but not games.
