ISF video calibration on the receiver? Shouldn't that be done at the monitor? I mean, if your display isn't calibrated, doesn't that defeat the purpose? For those people with a calibrated display, though, that'll be a nice feature.

Wow...NIIIICE amps...

Are these going to be available for U.S. markets? The 220 watt per channel spec on one of those receivers is absolutely amazing -- the kind of ratings you see on multichannel power amps. I'd hit it...

Default Onkyo Question

Guys, I recently purchased a sweet Onkyo, and I have some questions.

How do you make the OSD say something different than "DVD MultiCh" when I'm playing a Blu-ray, or a DVD on my PS3?

I do know that you can change the name of the channel (I changed mine to PS3 BD), but this stupid "DVD Multich" is what remains on the OSD.

And as for listening modes, I set mine on "MUltichannel" on all of them (For both my PS3 and my Xbox 360). Is this correct?

And also, "Direct" mode is definitely not the best mode for listening to music. I have mine set to "Studio-Mix".

(I'm using a 5.1 system)

Thanks

To answer your first question- you don't. It's displaying the input type. Since the PS3 decodes the audio and outputs it as LPCM, "Multich" PCM will be displayed. It's doing what it's supposed to do.

As to your second statement, that's up to opinion. That's why there are so many listening modes. I personally prefer "stereo"- I still get the Audyssey calibration that way and can still listen to 2channel. I don't like it matrixed out to the other speakers.

Yeah, I understand that it's suppose to say "Multich", but it doesn't need to say "DVD" before it (especially when I'm playing a BD). My PS3 is set to Linear PCM, do I need to have it on "Direct" or "Multichannel"?

My Xbox 360 is plugged up also via HDMI, and setup accordingly in the settings. Does this source need to be setup as "Direct" or "Multichannel".
? HD-DVDs usually have TrueHD or DD +. For DD+ HD-DVDs, does it need to be set differently?

Anything is better than "Direct" when listening to music. Stereo is much better.

Sorry, but these listening modes are confusing as to what the Onkyo is actually doing with the signal.

For you Onkyo fans, I just found out that you can crossover legacy sources to output HDMI without upconverting (No one could answer this question for me).

There's a bit of confusion in some of your understanding here...

First of all, how do you have your PLAYER set up? Your PS3 -- do you have it set to pass all codecs via bitstream or PCM? If they pass PCM, what you're seeing at the Onkyo is correct -- "DVD MULTICH" as the listening mode and input.

Ideally, you should set your PS3 to BITSTREAM all the legacy codecs like Dolby Digital and DTS (if you can do this; I don't have a PS3, but a standalone Panasonic player) and if your PS3 CAN, send the TrueHD and Master Audio codecs via bitstream, too -- if your PS3 CANNOT bitstream these codecs, which I don't THINK it can, then set the PS3 to "PCM" the TrueHD tracks, which will then send a decoded multichannel PCM signal to the Onkyo...the display reading "MULTICH" is correct, from what I understand, and is what reads on my Onkyo 605 when I play TrueHD tracks from my Panasonic. Why does it seem "stupid" to you to see this on the display? I, too, want to see the Master Audio and TrueHD indicators on the receiver's display, but I have to wait until I get a player than can bitstream these signals.

As for music listening, the "best" mode can be anything you want -- I use STEREO or PRO LOGIC II MUSIC, but "Direct" I wouldn't recommend because it just "sounds wrong" even though it's supposed to be the "cleanest" method.

Do you have any problems with the way the listening modes on the Onkyo are being DISPLAYED, such as "MULTICH"? Did you set your listening mode presets under the setup menu for each input?

I wonder what the watts per channel really is once you are running 7 speakers.....as I bet that rating is with the fronts only. Otherwise, it sounds like a nice piece of equipment.

Niiiice...

I haven't seen any nice Onkyo preamps for the U.S. market at all; I would definitely consider pairing one of these with a nice power amp if they offered one...

This site says 220 watts one channel driven.

Somebody raised this on the 707/807 launch thread as they thought it was a downgrade so I went back onto a Uk online retailers site and dug up the manual from the old 905 and it says exactly the same about its power output being 1 channel driven - yet i don't recall anyone saying that the 905 ever suffered from a lack of power either in reviews or on this site

I'm going to try and track down an 805 manual to see what that says.

Edit:

Found this on the same site for the 805:
AUDIO FEATURES
• 180 W/Ch Minimum into 6Ù, 1 kHz, IEC (1 Channel Driven)
• DTS®-ES™ Discrete/Matrix, DTS®Neo:6, DTS® 96/24, Dolby® Digital EX™, Dolby® Pro Logic IIx
• H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply) Massive High Power Transformer
• WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology)

If it's anything like the tx nr905 like mine the numbers would be close, the Onkyos seem to run truer to the actual numbers posted then the other brand AV's

The interesting thing is my manual for the 804 and yours for the 905 say the wattage is for 2 channels driven at 8 ohms and the website which shows the new Onkyo at 220 watts for 1 channel driven at 6 ohms.

Yeah, apparently, the spec is for ONE channel driven, which is a ridiculous rating...
