Universal Studios Meet Joe Black (1998)

Meet Joe Black Blu-ray

The Blu-ray of the 1998 film Meet Joe Black is now available for preorder at Amazon.com. This fantasy-romance-comedy-drama, starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins and Claire Forlani, which previously available on HD-DVD, will be available on BD on May 1st, 2012.

I assume this will be packaged as part of Universal's 100th Anniversary celebration, with an attractive slipcover.

I've always quite liked the film and have been waiting for its BD debut for a long time. Thus, I've already preordered it, especially given its attractive price of $13.99.

Ooh, if it is packaged like that, may have to get it. Another personal favorite, but I grabbed it from the UK on Blu-ray last year. Only cost me around $18

What a coincidence. Four days ago, after waiting so long I just got my copy from the U.K. Beautiful transfer. I wonder if they will have any extras? The UK has none. This is one of my favorite romantic movies. My all-time favorite has yet to be released, Somewhere in Time.

Yay! Very happy to see this coming out soon... Glad to hear the UK version had a strong transfer. hope ours does too... I've worried a little that the length of the film (180 mins!) might become an issue. I wonder about the extras. I have the ultimate edition DVD. The extras are lame except for the inclusion of Death Takes a Holiday. Doubt well see that on the blu.

I've never seen the movie, but i remember it and wasn't it a box office failure after putting alot of money into it? Not saying a movie has to make money to be good, but i remember alot of talk of it after it came out.

The length is a non-issue since The Godfather flicks were just as long(or longer in the case of Part II) and looked and sounded great. Plus I have Meet Joe Black on Blu-ray from the UK and I can vouch for it being a solid disc. The extras(assuming the US release includes them) are also no problem since there were so few to begin with and they're in SD anyway. The real question is will Universal include Death Takes a Holiday. I'd like to unload my Ultimate Edition DVD, so I hope it's ported over.

I wouldn't get too excited guys - if it's the same as the UK release you can expect a typically lacklustre transfer from Universal with noticeable edge enhancement. Better than the DVD, for sure, but not nearly as good as it could have been.

Also, there are zero extas. What I wouldn't give for a Martin Brest commentary (same goes for Scent Of A Woman). Meet Joe Black deserves so much more on Blu ray.

If that's true it will add another HD DVD to the list of titles that look better than their BD counterpart.

I had the HD-DVD before buying the UK Blu-ray, and the Blu-ray looks no worse. They didn't DNR this one.

We did see it at the theater due to a recommendation and it was extremely boring and drawn out. Ya better watch it first..... its no doubt a cure for isommnia.

The inclusion of Death Takes a Holiday would be nice, like the DVD SE. But the score for this film is magical, so lossless audio will be great.

Martin Brest has'nt made a film since the flop Gigli., a shame because he
is good director.

The best film he directed is Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run is fun too.

Marty Brest seems to have been completely blacklisted after Gigli, which makes no sense - the likes of McG churn out turd after turd, whereas Brest has made some genuine modern classics and, in most cases, turned serious profits for the studio. Even Gigli, while flawed, was not nearly as offensive as the franchise-destroying slop that 'directors' like Len Wiseman, McG and Paul W S Anderson have inflicted on The once great Die Hard, Alien, Predator and Terminator series'. Gigli was weak, but it didn't take down any other franchise and was, in fact, studio re-edited after Brest turned in a stronger, darker film.

Someone needs to hire the man again - he's an incredible director of actors and knows how to tell a proper story, the perfect antidote to the hollow ADD swill that Hollywood squats out these days.

Does anyone know what Brest has been doing since 2003?

I always thought Beverly Hills Slop was overrated. Now Midnight Run is a fantastic flick. One of the most underrated comedies ever made(although it was a box office success). Brest's problem is he's had one blockbuster in his career and that was due entirely to Eddie Murphy. Midnight Run was a decent-sized hit, Scent of a Woman did well but cost a lot to make, Meet Joe Black did not do well BECAUSE it cost a fortune to make(and was 3 hours long), and Gigli was a commercial and critical disaster.

Hopefully Universal does release Midnight Run soon on Blu-ray, preferably with some special features. That's another HD-DVD I'd like to replace.

Yes! I love this movie! Haven't seen it in a while because I was hoping this would happen. I have the Ultimate Edition DVD, and I don't plan to get rid of it, but I always thought the video quality was lacking tremendously. Pre-order for sure.
