Alan Holdsworth rocks! He has such a beautiful tone on the guitar, and his playing is so fluid. It's usually kind of muted on the top end, which to me almost makes it sound like a saxaphone. He's also played with some of my favorite drummers. Bill Bruford from King Crimson and Yes, and Chad Wackerman from Frank Zappa.

I have Road Games, Metal Fatigue, Atavachron, Sand, Secrets, and Wardenclyffe Tower.

I haven't heard that, but I'm mildly familiar with Jimmy Haslip. Yeah, it says "filmed in high definition" right there on the cover. I love blu-ray concerts.

But it's a 480i Standard DVD (but the picture is good) and it has an uncompressed audio track (although it's only stereo)

Hey guys, I just recently upraded my center channel from a bottom end Polk, to a Home Theater Direct level three center. I know most of you probably haven't heard of them, but they came recommended from Big Daddy, and it came with a 30 day trial with free return shipping, so I figured I would give it a shot, and I love it.

I want to upgrade my mains next, and they offer a bookshelf speaker and towers. The bookshelves have the same size driver as the center that I have(6 1/2"), whereas the towers have a 2" mid and dual 7" mid/woofers. Do you think the bookshelves would be enough, or do you think I would be selling myself short going that route? About 90% of my usage would be blu-ray concerts and movies, and I have two subs.

I have done some research, and from what I've found, these are some of the pros and cons:

* The bookshelf has the exact same size driver as the center which is ideal.
* It also has the same crossover, which is much simpler than the towers, and some people say that a simpler crossover can equal a purer sound.
* It is a smaller cabinet, which means less cabinet resonance problems.
* Supposedly, bookshelves tend to have a better soundstage and imaging.
* The bookshelves are $500 less for the pair.

And on the flipside:

* Towers don't require stands.
* They obviously have better low-end extension.
* They can handle more power.
* They look more impressive.

Right now, I'm definitely leaning towards the bookshelves. I plan to make my own stands, and with the two subs, I'll be using the bass management in my receiver to cut them off around 60hz~80hz.

It sounds like I've already made my decision, and right now I have enough money to pull the trigger on the bookshelves, but I just wanted to get some of your opinions before I do.

From my research I know that there are two different camps on this topic, but any input would be appreciated.

That's why I was complaining that it says "filmed in HD" on the box, because it's only 480i DVD.

Why yes, I do have the RTF blu-ray. Check out my blu-ray collection. I have my concerts listed first in their own category.

I'll bet that's an amazing show. My old band actually opened for Jimmy Herring's old band(Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit) a long time ago.

My own nonprofessional opinion is that the bookshelves will do good. Especially since you like listening too music. You also have the two subs and a rather small room..So no big problem filling out the room. They also look great in black. You can always use these as surrounds if you later decide too upgrade the front speakers again.

Not absolutely sure how the mid frequency sounds are managed when no dedicated mid driver is present. But since they are put in production they properly will do just great.

Try asking Big Daddy.

My first 3 Blu-ray ever were concerts. My first was Jeff Beck @ Ronnie Scotts, My second was the Return to Forever concert, Then the Quincy Jones Birthday concert.

I have my concerts listed under concerts in my collection.

I'll have to look into that DVD you suggested it sounds very interesting I do own alot of Mahavishnu Lp's though

I've thought of that, and if I do decide to upgrade my fronts later, I could use them for the rears, but I really want to get the dipoles from the same line for at least the sides.

They have the same crossover cutoff as my center(3rd order 18db slope at 2.5k).

I did ask Big Daddy, about three weeks ago, and he said:

"In most cases, bookshelf speakers can work well if you blend and calibrate them properly with the subwoofers. Of course, the placement of the subwoofers are also very important."

I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Jeff Beck @ Ronnie Scott's is probably my favorite concert blu-ray. I've almost worn a groove in it!
