Blu-ray Count

150 minutes - shown to critics in Dec 2005, released for 1 week in NY & LA Xmas Day 2005, sent to Academy and guild voters as a screener 135 minutes - wide release version 172 minutes - DVD extended cut I think the 150 min version is the best. The 135 min version was whittled down way too far following hostile reviews, while the 172 minute version reinstates almost everything that was cut, but adds a large number of very strange jumpcuts in scenes throughout the film, which feel out of place in a period piece. I'm glad to have my Italian DVD of the 150 min cut and won't buy a BD until it contains that version. |

From what I've read, Malick prefers the 135 min cut.
But it seems to me the existing Blu-ray is a missed opportunity. It contains the longest cut, and there is no footage in either of the other two cuts that isn't in this version, so why could the disc not make all three cuts available for them as wanted 'em? |

My thoughts exactly. All three versions have been released commercially in various forms, so it's not like Malick refused to let them come out on video... |

If you like The New World you really should have a read of this, it's very interesting
http://nonsite.org/issues/issue-2/te...icks-new-world ...and if you don't like The New World, it at least gives an insight into how carefully crafted Malick's films are |

This is why they make films by many generic directors, to please people like yourself. Malik has become one of my favorite directors BECAUSE he does his style that he does.

Finally picked this up and viewed it for the first time. It's a stunning movie. Rapturously beautiful really. Methodically paced, but engaging. I loved it. I'm watching the documentary now and it's fascinating, but I'm disappointed that Malick hasn't even appeared once in the docu.

I was fortunate to experience this wonderful film in the theater and it was so breathtakingly beautiful. I sat in my seat during the credits overwhelmed by the experience. |

I quickly upgraded of my Malick DVDs to Blu-ray after I bought my Blu-ray player in early December. Except, of course, Badlands, which I'm eagerly awaiting for the March release.
I had a blast enjoying the Blu-rays of Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, and The Tree of Life, but I've been watching them days apart to let each one sink in. The New World Blu-ray is still waiting to be watched, and I'll probably watch it this weekend. It's my least favorite of the Malick films, but it's still 10,000 times better than the best work of most directors. |

I like that last analogy best, seeing as Malick is himself legendary. As for The New World, I bought that and the score for The Social Network yesterday as part of the BBY 500 point promo. I've been meaning to buy it for a while, but I keep feeling like it will get a Criterion treatment. I don't know why though, seeing as the only Malick stuff that's released through Criterion is stuff that is recent (much like Wes Anderson's stuff). I kind of hope they go back and do some sort of Theatrical/Director's cut stuff with a 4K mastered transfer or something. All I need now is Badlands so that I can see Malick's filmography in order in time for To the Wonder (and both The Untitled Terrence Malick Project, and Knight of Cups). |

I used to own the Warner DVD of Badlands, and I just about wore out that DVD from watching it so often. The Blu-ray should be shipping soon. I really cannot wait to read the reviews of Badlands from posters here who have never seen the movie before. I think that all of you are in for a real treat. |

I wish that the person who did the cover art for The Blob also did it for Badlands. I don't see why Criterion didn't make the Badlands art from stills/photography- especially since the other two Malick Criterion titles are like that. |

![]() And they've released almost all the Wes Anderson films, recent or not (except for Life Aquatic and Fox). Recent has nothing to do with either of these filmmakers in regards to Criterion's output. |
