No brainer for me to get the new edition, I missed out on the old one, I do wish there was an exclusive digibook somewhere though

I can understand why you would think that, but I consider it the equivalent of a top of the line Criterion release. Great PQ, AQ, and 5 hours of special features. You also have to take into account that Criterions are $20 only about three times a year.

The movie itself only takes up just under half of the disc, so there's still plenty of room for the special features. It also helps that only two of them are in HD.

Does anyone know if this is the same exact disc from the 70th anniversary UCE?

I had the giftset preordered from Amazon for $42.74 (gold box deal). Tried cancelling yesterday morning, but they already shipped it.

I debated the idea of picking up the Target single disc edition for $20 and returning this one. I'd lose the bonus disc (6 hours of Warner Bros retrospectives). I won't be home when the package gets here from Amazon so I'd probably lose $5 or so if I wanted to ship it back. The swag isn't really worth much to me. Book might be alright, but an ugly French poster and coasters I'll never use? I do already own the UCE which was a deal of the day at Amazon for $25 some time ago and has nicer swag.

I don't know. I might just take the hit and keep the giftset along with the UCE. I still even own the 60th anniversary DVD from 2003. It is my favorite movie.

Anyone want to help report Target's $39.99 price to Amazon so they'll PM and I can get a few bucks back?

Mine's been shipped (along with "A Night To Remember").
This big box will be on display right next to the last UCE.
And if there's another UCE in the future, I'll get that one too.
My all time favorite movie.

"It's belittling to say that people should watch whatever they're happy watching?????

I don't necessarily like double-dipping, either. I bought the 2008 disc about a week before Warner announced there would be a new transfer forthcoming, so I have as much right to feel cheated as anyone, and then some. haha I'll still be picking up the new release, but I don't blame others for not doing so. And nothing in my post implies that I do. Let everyone watch what they're content to watch...it doesn't matter one jot to me what's in someone else's BD player."

Again, no offense, Oblivion. You seem to know why you like what you like and I agree with you in this case. My point in saying what I said was that 'edged-enhanced flatness' and 'for those who demand a more filmic presentation' implies that people who are okay with the old transfer are okay with a transfer that's poor, so they must not be as discerning as those in the know, when in reality, they may just not be projecting or may not have a set-up that makes the last transfer's imperfections as glaring.

I don't have a projector and my lcd is 42 inches so I'm probably not going to notice a huge difference. In fact the last time I upgraded from something that was supposed to be a DNR mess with Evil Dead 2, the differences weren't really enough to make a substantial impact on me. I'll upgrade Casablanca because it's a favorite I watch once a year at least.

Sorry for my choice of words if it wasn't your intention.

+1

Love to have a Blu-ray Digibook or SteelBook (probably both). Already had a Digibook DVD from Spain [So far I have 8 different editions in total on Blu-ray/HD DVD/DVD (including a 2 Tape VHS 50th Anniversary Collector's Limited Edition Box Set and a DVD colorized version)].

We are talking about my favorite film. Ha, Ha, Ha...

A Blu-ray Digibook is coming out from Italy on April 19, 2012

Regards,

I'm really glad that Warner didn't put any film specific extra content on the second disc. I can now just get the single disc edition. I wish Lionsgate had done this with Apocalypse Now (putting all the extras on the movie discs) because I bought the 2-disc version but wish I had the trailers for the film that are on the 3rd 'Hearts of Darkness' disc.

My set-up probably isn't that different from yours, but the difference between the two Evil Dead II presentations was, in my book, quite pronounced at any size. Anchor Bay's release for that title was a travesty. But I digress.

Is it necessarily wrong to make the obvious and true statement that not all people are equally discerning? I didn't mean it to be offensive, and I don't think that it is. Sorry if it came across that way to you, or anyone else.

Even if you are watching on a small set and can't notice a huge difference in the detailing of the picture... which even on my 32" in the bedroom I can during close-up shots... the boosted contrast ratio from the previous release has been fixed on this release.

The boosted contrast in the previous release made shadows seem like they weren't shadows at all... and hell, even in the one scene where Sam is playing in a dimmed room with a spotlight on him and Rick goes to hide the letters... the previous release made it look as if Sam was playing in a lit room.

Now? Shadows look like shadow, the film has an atomsphere and mood to it once again, and the scene where Sam is playing in a dark room actually looks like it's dark... and that's just one example of course, but the fixed contrast really is appreciable throughout the entirety of the picture.

This can be seen ON ANY display, and people hugging the 'old release was just fine because I wont take advantage of the added detail' line of reasoning need to understand that there's more at play here than just a boost in detail due to the lack of DNR this time around.

Didn't even know this was coming out until I saw my Target ad this morning. I'll be picking up the single disc edition from Target. A little disappointed that it doesn't have a slip, but it's not a deal breaker.

Comparing the two, the new transfer looks more like film (I would think that's the goal) while the older version has the dreaded video-y look.

I just pre-ordered this. I have seen this movie before but can't remember much about it. But even if this will not be a movie that I really like the bonus stuff in the set looks interesting. I will really enjoy the 5 hour documentary about Warner. I loved the 6 hour documentary about Mgm on my Wizard of Oz Blu-ray set.

This is a great movie that should be in every collection. It's just a question of which version you will be satisfied with. I have the HD DVD myself, which I upgraded to from the DVD. I'll get the new single disc Blu-ray at Target for the new transfer. I actually like the big box set (it would look classy on a shelf), but it's a little excessive. The box set is a numbered limited edition, so it might appeal to some collectors. Most people don't seem to want all the extra stuff, though. At least we will have a choice.

I've seen some people say they will buy it when it drops under $10, but when a studio goes to the trouble to remaster one of their classics from a new 4K scan, I think that should be supported as much as possible. If everybody waited until it hit the bargain bin at Wal-Mart, they would stop doing that.

Zen, I agree with supporting the 4K. I already have the box set on its way, and will be totally happy with all the fun items they've added. Actually, I think the $40 price tag is well worth, based on what you get. If you haven't seen all the fun stuff you get, go to YouTube and watch FilmFanPete's unboxing. I think the Blu by itself might not be worth it when you see all the cool stuff you get. I would be really disappointed if the single disc release did not come in a slipcover.

Got my box from Amazon today It's very nice. Although I could have done without the swag, since I didn't already have Casablanca on blu-ray, I didn't mind paying $45 for this set.

Anyway, for anyone who uses the Collectorz.com Movie Collector software to track their movies in a database, I entered all the info they were missing for this edition, and submitted it. Hopefully they'll process that quickly so it's available for other people who also use the software.
