Hi guys and gals, I have a small question. When I watch HD tv the picture is amazing. It's almost like 3d. The problem is when I watch a Blu-Ray disc it doesn't look much better then regular dvds. I have watched them on the samsung 1400 player and now I have the ps3. Is there some settings I need to change? I thought it would be breath taking on Blu. Movies I have watched are Kingdom of Heaven, Apocolypto and Siderman 3. I know my tv is not the problem since the HD channels look great. Any help would be great. Thanks

are you using an HDMI cable? and what resolution are your players set to output?
I think most people would agree on here that blu-ray looks much, much better than HD channels. |

If you are not using HDMI you will not get the full reslution. If you are not using HDMI get an HDMI cable right away.

I don't even know what the problem could be, unless for some reason the ps3 is set to output at 720p. Go into your ps3 settings and make sure 1080p is check marked. I hope that's solves the problem 'cause if not I can't think of why HD broadcasts would look better than the Blu's that you mentioned.

Have you adjusted the PS3 from its default 480 setting? You have to tell the PS3 to play in 1080...by default it will play at 480.

Only if he had it hooked up to a SDTV before he hooked it up to the HDTV. Both of my ps3's detected the max res of my HDTV's when they were connected for the very first time.

I know why your HDTV cable looks better than blu-rays. HD cable, like the grammy's, the night show, etc are shot with actual HD digital cameras. So you get that ridiculously crisp, sharp picture. Your blu-rays are shot on standard film, naturally, so they have a "film" look. Even though I love watching things like the grammys in HD, I couldn't imagine a full movie in Digital HD.
On a side note, you want the HD look you get from cable on a blu-ray? Buy a concert (dave matthews) or Planet Earth filmed with an HD digital camera. Edit:after seeing the three movies you have seen on blu-ray, I think seeing cars, ratatioulle, or any pixar/disney animated film will work as well. Last edited by LUkassZ; 03-29-2008 at 05:26 PM. |

Of course + their normaly usually hard edgy MTF curve vs transfers of film's sharpness curve which is usually softer (sloping down gentlyas detail increases) |

Regardless I think this is the "difference" he is talking about and it has absolutely nothing to do with the settings, HDMI cable, etc he is using! This really has nothing to do with the issue he is referring to. |

First, is your display calbrated? Even the basic user calibration using DVE will make your BD movies much better.
When I first got my HDTV and BD player, I spent the first several weeks in awe of the "3D" sensation and the vivid colors. But the novelty wore off. The picture really shouldn't look that way, and when properly calibrated, the pictures look like they should. Contrast, inaccurate colors, edge enhancement and other features of the display give those unnatural appearances to the image. |

I have the same tv and I use the Sony BDP S1 bd player and let me tell you its no contest between broadcast tv and BD. You need to check all your settings.
